  1. Hi Grant, the F v R chassis is more to do with the tapered section and the castings for spring mountings. An F model chassis is not identical LHS v RHS, on the LHS the front, front spring mount is nothing like the RHS front spring mount, this bracket also supports the LHD steering box and is about 20 in long, the RHS spring bracket is only about 11 in long, also the way the chassis splays out at the front is not equidistant LHS v RHS, however the rear front spring mounts each side appear to be the same, and are'nt the same as an R model. The F model was not really designed to be RHD. So when converting F's to RHD it was an unsatifactory comprimise. Using the R chassis meant it was easier to convert to RHD. regards jeffro.

Hi Jeffro, interesting. the front mounts for suspension are the same but opposite on this one and the chassis has hole in lhs for steering box. i am using all the F front suspension and the FA532 axle in the R i am putting together. have also got a set of 10 stud budd hubs for it. and new king pin kit.

    regards Grant

  2. oh...dinkum?.. wtf?!! I speak fluent Canadian, every time you say something just say "eh?" at the end,but i'm still tryng to learn Australian.

Hi all, i carry spare alternator, oil, all tools to rebuild, belts, hoses, water, colt 45, chain, drag link so if it poops its selfs in a big way another road train can pull it into the next town, mozzie repellant doesnt work to well out here besides we gotta watch out for snakes, spiders etc when we go to the dunny on the side of the road, then you have march flys, blow flys ants, lizards wild pigs, crocodiles rite up north so you have plenty of incentive to get that truck moving again, then you got the heat a dry 50 degree c sometimes.

its all fun tho. :rolleyes :D

    regards Grant

  3. Hi Grant, I'm pretty sure Mack doubled up single rails, like you could have 10.5 in rails doubled up to be double rail. You wouldnt get 9 in rails in a single rail unless it was say an R400 or a B40 series. 9 in rails in a 600 or 700 series truck would be doubled, whereas 10.5's could be single or doubled. That Mack you've got if it is factory 866 is an FR797RS. This engine was'nt available in Aust till Sept 1972, towards the end of 1971 the F model went to the R model chassis, the chassis no should be just in front of drive axle on the drivers side. regards jeffro

Hello, i see, will take a look.

    regards Grant

  4. hi Grant, there are different depth frames, single rail frames in a 700 series truck is about 10.5 in, double rail is about 9. I dont have frame sizes at hand, but im sure they could have been deeper for severe service. I think there was an 11 in frame. This goes for F and R. Your F could be an FR700RSX, or could have been axtremely long WB. It could also be 2in deeper and not 3in. jeffro.

hello, this one is a doble frame and between 2 and 3 inches deeper, yes its a fairly long wheel base, long enuf to have 2 fuel tanks down the side. it had an 866 in it with a 12 speed and 5.13 diffs with an fa532 front axle.

  5. Stupid computers-that's why I don't get any parts at Advance Auto Parts. Went to the one in Appomattox once to get a battery for my lawnmower.Looked like a motorcycle battery. The guy said " I need the make, model, and serial number". I said "it's an MTD,the battery looks just like a motorcycle battery". So he threw his hands up and said "I need all the information, there's a hundred different batteries". I threw my hands up too and said "you don't have a hundred different batteries in the store!" and left, leaving a couple of items i'd picked up laying on the counter.Went right up the street to Western Auto, told the guy I needed a battery for my mower, and he went and got one off the shelf and said "does it look like this?" I said "yes-exactly".Same thing when I needed some half inch studs-a generic type item, but if you can't give them some type of vehicle to look up they don't know what you're talking about. Ran into the same situation when I stopped at the one in Dillwyn to get a low beam headlight for the Peterbilt-all the rectangular headlights are the same,I think they're 1a1 and 2a1 for low and high beam. As soon as they asked what type of vehicle it just really made me hot so I said "i'm building a spaceship in the backyard and I want to put headlights on it".The girl behind the counter didn't say anything, just went and got a head light off the shelf. I paid for it and when I was going out the door she said "good luck with your spaceship". I said "thank you".

yep, crazy isnt it, there the same everywhere. and i had the front end sand blasted, and what do you know??

FA 532 any one know what spec this axle is? the number was poorly stamped, but there it was.

  6. Yea ducky: it is a R and i was just figuring out how to fix them since both sides at the bottom are rusted.

I here ya! there is new door shells on ebay from a guy in Texas, have not got anything from him yet, but have had a couple of emails from him, he is helpfull

    ebay number 110265592982

    regards Grant

  7. The least expensive and easiest way is to replace the door shell with a used unit. They are plentiful as many years fit. Depending on the year, the latch mechanism is the only real difference. Older units use a rotary type latch, later use a double pawl style latch. The cutover was 1979 to the double pawl. 1977 was the start of the cutover until existing stocks were depleted at the factory level.

if its an R model, i looked at a new old stock door outer skin 2 days ago.

  8. I am looking at buying a truck with a T864 in it. I had trouble with a 711 back in the late 70's and I went back to the 673. The 711 cracked between the two counterbores. I am concerned I might have the same problem with the 864. I need to use it for about 20k loaded miles a years, so I need it hold up, not just be a "show" truck.

Seems like I should look for an 866 for a backup.

On a related topic, did the 864 and 865/866 have a Mack single disk clutch? Can you replace the Mack clutch with a Spicer angle spring? Do you have to replace the rear housing and move the transmission mounting brackets?

My 866 has a twin disc spicer bolted to it, its a 15.5 inch. it all looks standard mack bellhousing on the 12 speed and the truck was rated to 90 tons

    regards Grant

  9. Hello, sorry for the suspense, went to Broome i a triple in a yucky aerodyne. i got no idea why there is so many of them monkey trucks on the road.

the panels are new old stock mack i think?

they are thru paganelli trucks here in perth, they aint cheap, 1000.00 bucks for steel roof panel, and 2000.00 to do all gutters around roof, am going there in next couple of days to see how big gutter panels are.

  10. Hello, i posted chassis number above, its to old for the spare parts boys, they are almost straight out of school.

and no id #s on front of axle, it only has casting numbers. the other two trucks do have these numbers tho.

Gleemans were great to deal with, they put me onto a group in perth who can help. may have found replcement roof skins to., will know more tomorrow. and they know what a microfish is, so i dare say i am in luck. :D

  11. I spoke to them today, they have no info on sizes, i even asked him if he wanted the part number off the stub axle, the biggest problem is the age of the truck, there computers dont date back that far, so its to hard for them to go look at the fish, most dont even know what that is

    regards Grant

  12. does any body know how to tell what front axle is in a truck?

the parts guys keep asking me for an axle part number and they say its a stamped number, this one has only 2 digits

11 thats it, the rest are casting numbers, they then ask me for a chassis number, I give them that 6/75 FR797 RS1057

gvm 56000lbs there is no other info on ID plate, no engine size or anything I need to replace the king pins and convert to ten stud wich keeps the origonal drum, I have tried both truckline stores here in perth and Mack, and another Mack specialist.

is it really that hard? cars are much easier to work on. :D
