Picked up this B61ST Dump Truck
jessecam replied to jessecam's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Thanks, I will be working on it next week to try getting it running, the 24 volt relay and solenoid under the seat had me stumped for a little bit But i think i have it now. i was told the plywood was added to the outside of the steel to cover dents and help keep asphalt warmer on longer hauls especially the michigan weather. I dont know if I believe that. -

Picked up this B61ST Dump Truck
jessecam replied to jessecam's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
The transmission in this B has a regular shifter, but the switch they screwed to the dash is air switch, not mechanical linkage. I thought the unishift would be an air shifter. I will try to get numbers off the transmission today. from the forum it looks like the numbers to be on the drivers side of the case? -
Same thing here, thought it was my iphone messing up, comes up FATAL ERROR. Works ok on android.

Picked up this B61ST Dump Truck

The engine was not stuck and turns over free but didnot try to start yet, I had issues with the 24 volt starter. Does anyone know were is the air switch for the unishift (high, low) supposed to be mounted, how durable are they and are there any parts available. -
I picked up this B61ST mack I found in the back of an old gravel pit last year. Last fall I did a quick glance but did not look over really well, the interior was tore up with animals living in it. Had it towed home (50 miles) yesterday after I changed the rotted out steer tires. I spent the rest of the day cleaning it out and seeing what options it had to determine to use for parts for my B42 or restore. One of the local said it used to be there lowboy truck and in the late seventies early eighties they put A dump box on it to haul asphalt, but the pit was sold in 1986 or 1987 and he doesn't remember the truck running after that. I am awaiting information from the mack museum. I was a little disappointed in it having a ten speed unishift that they altered to a dash air switch, cracked frame, driverside rear between rear axles, floors rotted and fabricated for dump body. I am impressed with fenders, frame, rest of cab in being in great shape which I believe is due to not being used in winter and sprayed down with diesel fuel and transfluid twice a day so asphalt would not stick to it. I will try again today to see if I can get it started but can not get the engine to turn over. If stuck, anyone have the easy way to brake lose. there is still antifreeze in it and oil is full with no water in it or the fuel tank. I have added some pictures and will keep update on progress.

do you have any idea on the engines available? I could not get to see what was in this one.

Sure do, she is pretty rough but like the L model, everything is there. suicide doors ??? there's something that hasn't made it back to this era. You have to love these old trucks.
-
Thanks, he's supposed to let me know tomorrow on purchasing the lJT and the B 61. I won't be able to haul them home until after the seasonal load restrictions are off. They are estimating May 1st or 4th.

(There was availability of 510 or 707 overhead valve gassers in the LJ.) I could not find any engine identification Or engine tags, Whats the easiest way to tell the difference between the two
-
Yes scrap prices being down certianly helps but it seems my offers on these trucks are based on the old scrap prices. He had a b61 dump that I wanted and now looking at the L model and the funny looking autocar

Found this mack LJT in the woods and see it has a huge gas engine. Cant seem to find much info on it, was there different size gas engines in them. Was hoping it had a magnadyne flat head to match my B-42 but no luck. Made a offer but havent heard back. Its in very rough shape but some good parts. Are they worth anything for parts or better to leave there? I will try they mack museum to get info if I purchase.

Wow, not many miles on it. Do you know what the hp difference from the 401 is and is it a clean bolt in were everything will match up. Like I said, dont know much about the gasser's. Has it been sitting a while since pulled. That may be a great option for me. -

You guys are a blast, sounds like skys the limit. Dont sound like the straight 5 trans is not very universal. I never thought about the dt466, or detroit 71 or 53 series. I do have a 2000 5.9 cummins, 1988 dt466, in very good shape to but part of me wants to keep original. I am supposed to start on this project this fall and am trying to get all my ducks in a row. Its hard, I want to pull the engine out now. -

I I did not know on the engine, it was purchased on line and has not been plated since 1981. I figured there was a reason they parked it and I am ok with it. I dont know if there are a lot of parts available for the 401 gasser or even if I have ever seen a used 401 for sale. I have some option on diesel engines but hard to find a donor truck in northern michigan. -

Thanks, how did you do that -
I received the Mack B42 from out west and am very impressed with the overall body and frame. Its amazing how clean all the metal is. A few dents here and there, I noticed what seems to be a few stress crack on the back of the cab. The interior is very straight also except for the seat. I checked the oil and threw a battery init but the starter would not engage. After crawling under to remove thr starter I see a 4" by 6" opening in the block were a rod came threw on the 401 gas engine. So that being said, I have sentfor information from the Mack Museum and looking for thoughts on a replacement engine and whether I should find a diesel or the original gas motor. The trans is a 5 speed with no 2 speed rearend. Just wanted to know any thoughts or ideas. I do like to keep things original but?
