  1. can i use heavy gear oil for the diffs too? like 85w-140?
  2. evening gentlemen, I have an '88 r688st with an E6 350 econodyne and a 12 speed mack tranny. Its the one with a direct/high/neutral/reverse all air shifted and also has a low/direct air shift on the dash for lo lo. What tranny is this, what oil do i use, and how much? also, i believe i have mack rears as well, but how can i find what model axles i have and what ratio they are? thanks
  3. alright, thanks a lot man so as long as i have oil up to the big plug hole on the front box, im good right?
  4. ok, but are the 5 speed main box and the auxiallary spliter separate, or one unit?
  5. so are the power divider, bevel gear compartment, and differential housing all separate? they all have their own fill and drain plugs. the oil level in the differential is at the right amount, so am i ok, or do the power divider and bevel gear compartment need oil up to the fill plug too?
  6. heys guys, i got an 88 r688 with what i believe to be mack rear ends. from what it looks like, there is a separate gear box on top of both carrier/differential housings, separate from the carrier housing. on the passenger side of these gear boxes, there is a 3/4" plug on a side cover, and when i opened them, no oil came out. also, on the front diff. where the driveshaft comes in there is another "box" that requires oil, and once again upon opening the plug, no oil came out...is this all normal or do i clearly need to add more oil? if this still doesnt make sense i will get pics...any help is appreciated
  7. hey guys, i have a mack 12 speed air split and looking underneath it i found that it has two fill plugs; one is 3/4 square on the rear of the tranny, the other is a 1-5/8 bolt plug, both plugs are on the passenger side. my first question is are there separate boxes here that have separate oil levels? next, when i removed the 1-5/8 bolt a little oil came out so i knew it was full, but when i unscrewed the rear, 3/4 plug no oil came out. so, is this just a fill plug or is for measuring the oil level for a separate tranny box? i appreciate the help
  8. thanks for the info on that e6 300 that you turned up, did you upgrade the turbo as well? if so, what did you use? my e6 has the american bosch, is that what your picture shows? it doesnt look too familiar to me...
  9. is 375 hp, a 25 hp increase, realistic? or would it dangerous for the engine? is it possible?
  10. hey guys, i know that because my E-6 350 has a mechanical pump i can probable squeeze a little more power out of it. so, i am wondering how i go about this? i am aware that this is no hot rod, but i would like a little more power so i can keep up with some of our newer trucks. if anyone here has done such a mondification i would appreciate some details and results. i know runaways can be an issue so id like to avoid this. of course i understand that every truck will be different, but a little push in the right the direction would be great so that i can fine tune it to where it works for me. once again, im not looking for a significant power increase, just a little more...thanks
  11. hello, i am curious is there anyway to tell if a r model has a v8 without opening the hood? are there any exterior differences? i have noticed that some r model's have a longer hood, is that only if they have a v8? thanks
  12. i drive a 12 speed and it will grind regardless if its cold, however when it warms up, when your in 4H, revv it high and shift lever to 5H, then immediately click it to 5D and tap the accelerator and it will be in 5D like any crash box, timing is everything
  13. here's what you need this is the donaldson part i think you were talking about and i agree with your original post, truckers need to take pride in their trucks. i prefer this old mack because it has personality, looks, and is more reliable than the new kw's i was driving. its not the fastest, but everyone knows slow and steady wins the race!
  14. really? that must have been before my time this truck was bought new in 88, and we have babied it since we converted our fleet over to kenworths and no, that probably wasn't me you saw up on rt. 12
  15. I am not very familiar with b models, so i have a few questions First, what kind of horsepower #'s did they make and what was the engine displacement? What trannys were available? This may sound dumb, but did they use a similar air brake system as modern trucks, like glad hands and such, and can b's be used with modern trailers? What was the gvwr for a tandem axle b model? I apologize for sounding like a newbie
  16. Is there a 2 stick mack 13 speed that came in r models? for some reason i seem to remember hearing about a transmission that had a five gear box and a low, direct, and high box, but for fifth gear you only used high. does this tranny exist or am i losing it? on this subject, other than the 6 speed, what other 2 sticks trannys did mack have for the r model?
  17. hey storkmack, i noticed in your gallery pictures there is an '85 r-model and the caption says you are in a sod field. its ironic because i work at a sod fam, Central Sod Farms, and we have farms in Plainfield and Marengo. What farm were you hauling for? Stew
  18. Well how about that! My main office is in Plainfiled, and we have an additional farm in Marengo. What color is your truck? Then I will be able to recognize you. Stew
  19. I am curius to see what kind of MPG's everyone is getting, so please state your setup and what your fuel economy is (if you know). E6 350hp tractor pulling flatbed or lowboy-5.9 mpg
  20. Well i got a air intake scoop for my truck! Stole it off a 90's Ford cabover parked in the back and it just slid on perfectly. You can see it if you look at my avatar closely. I don't think it will add any power but it looks pretty bad ass!
  21. For those who know what I am talking about, some Australian Mack R's had a "scoop" top for the air cleaners that open towards the front of the truck. Does anyone know where I could acquire and purchase one of these for my truck? Are there any negative sides to having this style? Does rain get in? Any Australian truckers here?
  22. my trick for that is to leave it in high and go from 4 high to 5 high, then put it in direct and rev slightly so it engages into 5 direct, it works for me and when you get the hang of it, it won't grind anymore i hope that makes sense...
