  1. The 237 in our R has one of these contraptions. Oil is expensive so we'll probably do away with it, lol

My uncle has a '74 R686 tri axle, double frame, 237 turned up to a 300, 6spd, steel bed, etc. The cab is in decent shape and all the truck really needs are tires and some TLC.....with the huge exception of the frame being split on the bottom flange between the tandems. I could probably acquire the truck fairly cheap. But if I would, the big question is, should I cut the frame down and make it a tandem, or put new rails under it? With that being said, what exactly is involved with putting new rails under the truck?
  4. With the tandem out of whack thing being said, would it be possible for a u-bolt to be stretched and letting the rear walk a little bit? In theory, that would also make the tires drag a little and give the rubber on road friction noise. I'm not sure, just spitballing. Good luck
  5. I love the steel nose Macks. Me and the old man are shopping around for a tractor at the moment. While I was shopping around, I saw a RD800 tractor. Like a DM800 without the offset cab. The only one I've ever seen. It was a really sharp truck with a E9 and an 8LL.
  6. I'm 22 years old, don't have my CDLs...yet, and I've never really done any major repairs to anything this big, so I've got a whole world of knowledge that needs pounded into me. I've played with pickup trucks, but I've already noticed that these are two different worlds. I've got a smart phone, but I never seem to find what I'm looking for on there.... I hate smart phones, lol
  7. The RS. I've got a 73 R600. S/A, flatbed w/ rolling tail, winch, etc. We bought it off of Wolfe's Excavating. They're shop is right by Larew's. It was originally a firetruck from down there. Fayettenam is the nickname for Fayette County. I'm right between Greene and Somerset counties in the Southwestern corner.

  9. Ethan, depending on what part of PA you're from, there's a guy in Tunnelton, WV that has a bunch of old Macks. Look up Larew's truck parts or something of the sort. If he doesn't have it, he might know where to find it. Our Mack come from Tunnelton and on the way down I saw a bunch of B models just sitting off the road. I'm not sure what exactly they are, I'm not too familiar with them, but if you're close, it'd be worth a look. They don't look like they run often at all, so I'd imagine the owners might be interested in letting them go.

Doesn't sound like it, but every time I think something is going to be an easy job, it turns into a disaster and a half...

  13. I've never seen an amphibious excavator before. That thing is neat! Hate to throw a track in the water though, lol. We've got a Cat E70B at work, it's child's play compared to these though, lol
  14. My truck is leaking oil all over the wheel. I'm thinking it's a wheel seal, or hub seal if these even have them. I'm guessing it's a relatively simple task, but I'm just getting into working on big trucks, so I just wanted to see what I'm up against. Any feedback would be really appreciated. Thanks!

  16. Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, our family always run R models. They seem to be one of the tougher trucks out there, and the mechanical Mack motors will take just about anything you throw at them. I'll definitely get some pictures up within the next few days, possibly tonight, depending on if I have any on my phone. I need to get the pictures up because the truck was a definite steal for $3k!
  17. Hi, everybody! I'm Jim. New to the site and the trucking industry...for the most part. My dad and uncle had trucks while I was growing up, but they both got out of it when I was fairly young. Me and dad just acquired a Mack and now I'm here, lol. Currently working on getting my CDLs, took my DOT physical yesterday. The truck is a '73 R600, currently has a 237 with a spun bearing, 6spd, Tulsa winch, flatbed with rolling tailboard, single axle, dual, straight pipe exhaust, and no rust! Not a bad deal for $3,000. Now since we have the truck, I'm going to become a driver and a mechanic. So, I'm hoping you guys can help me along.
  18. I'm looking to buy a 2v 350 for my R model. I'll also take a 237 or 300 for the right price. Doesn't have to be a perfect runner, but not looking for something I'm going to have to rebuild. Truck already has a bad motor (237 with a spun bearing) so I'm not looking for another basket case motor. I'm also looking for wetline and PTO parts. It's got a 6spd trans. It's got a PTO as of right now, but the shaft is on a pretty wicked bind, so maybe someone has something that will work a little better than what's currently on it. The truck doesn't currently have a wet line, so I'm looking for everything. Not necessarily looking to buy it all in a package, but that'd be nice. I'm in the southwestern, Pennsylvania area, willing to travel to pickup. If you guys have anything, please let me know. Thanks!
