  1. Guys, We have pulled the cab in prep for cleaning up the chassis. All of the rubber bushings are showing their 48 years of age. Any suggestions as to where you get these things? Same with trans (quadbox) isolators.?????
  2. Theak They are both double frames
  3. Well guys, I'm looking for a few opinions. I have a single axle B with 35,000 lb single rear axle. (RAD 111). I bought a tandem B-61 for the cab, but after looking at it, the engine is better then in my single axle plus its a quad box. In addition, even though its a tandem, except of course for the cross members, the frame rails are the same and the cab-axle dimensions are the same. I'm thinking, instead of pulling the engine/trans and the cab from the tandem, I perhaps should pull the big axles/wheels off the single axle and put them under the tandem. Biggest concern is redrilling the frame. As it was a tandem, it has plenty of holes associated with the center cross members. Plus the 35,000 lb rear from the single has torque rod hangars that would also have to be drilled out. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
  4. Guys, Well I did get my parts back. And I think the stuff looks good. One of the side dogs lost a bit of material on the edge and the "Mack" side scripts have a few pits. But the "Mack" that goes above the radiator shell and the dog bas and "the Dog" Look great. I will post some pictures when I get a minute- actually I took a before photo so I will stage the after the same way. Not sure Rod what the procedure was but all in all I'm satisfied. I alkso priced out the same items on Watts Mack and I saved about 225 plus shipping. I have no clue as to the quailty of the items Watts has as I assume its all reproduction but in addition to saving a few bucks I do know what roads my dog went down 40 plus years ago!
  5. Paul, The guy is actually a broker of sorts. He runs a speed shop and provides rechroming as one of his sidelines. the guy he uses is in rhode Island. This guy was referred to me by a guy who has an established powder coating business- not someone who would pass out endorsements casually. I haven't given him the green light but I probably will. Am I paying a bit of a "handling" charge? Probably. but I did say to the guy.."well why don't I just find a plater and cut you out as the middleman?" His answer was that he had purchasing power and a longstanding relationship with this guy. I kind of think the plater would rather not deal with a lot of people coming into his business with small orders. My guy on the other hand collects orders and brings them down to the guy so the plater deals with one guy vs the individual accounts. I know as a matter of fact with my parts he also was bringing down to the guy a set of front leaf springs for a "bucket T", as well as some assorted bumpers and grill parts. I will keep you posted.
  6. Guys, Well I have a hard number. $775 bucks will get me 8 pieces as follows: Nosing that "Dog is attached to. "Mack" header that is under the nosing on the rad shell Bull dog Right and left side hood dogs one "Thermodyne" one "diesel" one "B-61" Any opinions? PS- I also sent him my rad shell just for kicks- a grand! I think it will look nice in Black with redshutters and chrome hood latches!
  7. Theakers- thx for the input.
  8. Guys, Ca anyone shed some light on non- turbo 673 variations. I have a B 68X that someone at some point in time yanked the gas engine and put a 673 in its place. This engine is as basic as you can get. The street side of the block is clean with nothing but the intake manifold on it and two oil hoses that go to/from a Luberfiner. I also have a B-61S that is a 1963 and has a 673 thst is totally different. Instead of a single piece intake manifold, it has a split manifold plus what I believe is an oil cooler. Anyone have a clue as to the HP differences in these two motors?
  9. Guys, Thank you all for your responses. I tracked down a shop in my area and am going to bring all my stuff down to him next week. He says his minimum is $125. I gather that refers to what can fit in the basket or tank or whatever. I will keep you posted as I would think this is a commeon issue today.
  10. Anyone have any experience with getting their old B Model parts rechromed? Costs? Things to look for in a good shop? I'm talking about the hood lettering, the dogs on the hood panels as well as the "mack" nose piece including the Dog. My stuff has quite a bit of pitting.
  11. F'Train, I will try to post a picture if I can. Looks like it will not be the easiest thing given diameter of spring packs vs what is on there now. Bob
  12. Any ideas out there? My 61 B has an RAD 111 35,000 lb rear axle. The brake chambers are those big cans that are about 5" in dia. and about 6" long and they are on the front side of the axle. On the back side, there is a bar that connects the right and left slack adjuster. Existing parkig brake is the manual Orschlen lever connected to the drive shaft- not much for a single axle with a 46,000 lb gvw! My question is, what would the best way be to convert this to maxi chambers? Bob
  13. Duh! why did'nt I think of that. I have what was a B-68X that someone converted to a 673- left what I assume is original radiator in that did not have shutters. I just bought a 61 (for the cab and the 673 quad box) and the shutters and the shutterstat assembly looks good. Common sense would have told me that if I looked at it long enough. I also salvaged the radiator shutters and shell off of a junkyard B-42 -just before the shears got to it. and I have that complete assembly. Is the shutterstat rebuildable to any degree? Any info would be appreciated. Bob
  14. Guys, How does the shutterstat get its temp info telling the shutterstat to open or close?
  15. Guys, speaking of door seals, what is a good replacement product for the seals?
  16. 10-4 Freightrain- My problem then will be the guy wont sell the carrier plus the axles blah-blah. I'm afraid I' going to be going down the road at 45 MPH with my 9.05 CRD 62!
  17. Freighttrain, Thx for the response. Looks like I'm gonna have to study this!
  18. I have a CRD 62 carrier and I am told that a CRD 118 is a replacement. The only issue is the CRD 118 spec sheet says the axles have "involute" splines. What are involute splines. the CRD 62 I have has straight splines on both ends. Can anyone help me out.?
  19. So Fred, would you have a CRD 118 in say a 5.52?
  20. 24" rubber with 8.24 rears and an OD quad box (.74 ) wiill give you (2100 X 60)/442X.74 X 8.24= 46.75mph This makes the assumption that 5th hi is .74 If it wasn't an OD and was direct, same combination would give 34.59 mph I am going through same exercise.. I have what was a B-68X. It has a 9.05 rear and when built was a gas job with a quad box. somewhere in its 47 years, someone dropped a 673 with a duplex in it. I have not had it on the road but was told by the last guy who drove it on the road (he plowed with it) he said it would do 35! bottom line when yu give away 400 RPM's going from gas to diesel you pay the price.
  21. I have an RAD 111 rear axle which has a 35,000 lb. rating and a CRD 62 carrier with a 9.05 ratio. The truck was originally a 540 gas/TR720 (B-68X) and at some point, someone put a 673 and Duplex in it. That gave away 300 RPMS gas to diesel and I believe the crrent Duplex is direct. Anyone have an idea where I might find a CRD 62 with a higher gear? Mack Museum (Don Schumaker) advises that a CRD 118 was a running change for the 62 so that is another option if I can find one with a higher gear. Appreciate any thoughts anyone might have on a potential source.
  22. How about it. Anyone have an experiencing with having a rad shell chromed?
  23. RC-51, Where in Mass? I just registered as well- Bolton B-68X Some helpful guys here!
  24. Guys, thank you all for the feedback- No doubt the gas engine (3000 RPM) made a big difference vs a 2100 rpm diesel. It does have big rubber (11:00-24) but 9.05 is a killer. B61Fred, emailme at fd68brnco@aol.com with what yo have for gears. Rear is an RAD 111. Bob
