  1. yup agree totally Id never buy a pete, Not nowhere near the truck of a KW petes are for them gear shift jockies you see on the hwy,, err well at least you can see there eyes peering over there door jamb from sitting on the floor while driving...

I have to agree. Jeff traded the 2000 W900L I was driving for the 2006 Peterbilt, and I wish he had kept it. It never broke down, ran good, had an N14 Cummins in it, and I just liked it better. Plus, a W900 is just a prettier truck in my opinion.

Also true, I can't even put any air in the seat or all i'd be able to see would be about 10 feet in front of me!

  2. I agree with Rowdy the trucks back then were ahead of their time and had class. Now these so called areo trucks are just ugly and no class.

Me too. I love the old stuff-trucks used to have character. Now they all look alike, like cars. I can't identify most cars anymore until I see the name. You used to be able to tell at a glance what a '65 Impala was, or a Fairlane, or Roadrunner, or Chevette...I remember a guy from high school who was bragging that his parents were gonna get him a 'vette- and they did. A Chevette though, not a Corvette.

  3. Do you think you could get away with calling it an RV? I once tried calling a dirt car I was building a bass boat, that didn't work.

"James, you're gonna get yourself drowned! I just don't think that thing's gonna float- get rid of it, ASAP!"

  4. Rob next time you see a frameless end dump look at the trailers 5th wheel plate. it will have a pivot mount for the hyd hoist and a pivot for the uder carrage beams.

becasue of the 2 pivot joints on the plate and the 5th wheel pivot it would be a scary mess to raise or lower the trailer. So what you do is Block the 5th wheel to prohibit its movment. With it blocked now the trailer plate has a solid surface to let the hoist and beams safely work to "inchworm" the trailer when dumping.. most if not all Frameless and 1/4 frames need to be used with a blocked 5th wheel. I have blocked mine as well and did the fab work myself. I have a place on the side of my frame rails under the fuel tank straps that I put mine when not in use..

We used to block the 5th. wheel when we pulled long steel on steerable dollies. The front of the beam just sat on a bolster on the fifth wheel. We had the hi-tech equipment-a piece of wood across the frame under the back of the 5th. wheel, held in place by a rubber strap on each end.

  5. brilliant

I like that setup very clean looking as well.also looks very funtional, and easy to change out. things I like to do with my Equipment.

I hate having things in my cab, things that will become deadly when in a crash or worse Rollover.. its amazing at what kinda damage things can do even small things inside your cab... I try to keep what Im driving as clan and clutter free as possible inside, even a thermos bottle can do serious damage inside a cab. things ya never really think about till it happens. Or you see what they have done.

    Arctic

This is true-Lonely Wolf used to keep a tool box in the passenger side floor in his cabover Kenworth. When he tipped over on rt. 26 he said he wasn't hurt but that tool box "'bout beat me to death".

  6. It does look really good for it's age, and it certainly would look good behind your new B-67. Don't pay any attention to Joe- you know you NEED that trailer. Momma will understand.

Can I have an R-model or two, a B-model, and your 3/4'' socket set since you won't be needing them anymore?

  7. I've seen several 3/4 ton trucks with the nuts tightened that way also. I'd rather have the correct tools and not butcher the job, or hurt myself, (again). Of course it's usually me taking the damn thing apart again so I don't want things screwed up.

Man that truck sure seems to be a deliverance of problems no matter how small, or large. After consulting with the Dr. side of my brain; The diagnosis is simple: Drive Mack, never look back.

    Rob

I'll drive a Mack if Jeff Moore buys one. But, that's not likely slow as things are. I heard today we're not getting a safety bonus this year-they just didn't have it. And a pay cut may be next...so much for tires, and wheels, and food, shelter, and electricity.

  8. I'm going to order a 5:1 ratio pneumatic pump and totalizer for this application. Everything else is air powered and some of this stuff holds a lot of oil.

Had you tightened those nuts up on me with a chisel, I would have worked really hard to find forgiveness in my heart for your actions; I think you've spared us both some grief. (I'm still working on the Pete thing).

    Rob

yeah, that was the common procedure-tighten the outside nut, then tighten it some more with the chisel, then bend the little lock tab down with the hammer.

I've been through a clutch, radiator hose, turbo hose, and a fan belt in less than a week on that Pete.

  9. I realize this question sounds a little off kilter but with the advent of cell phones, nationwide calling plans, internet availability most places, is the CB radio still the necessity it was during the 70's, and 80's? Or is it a left over novelty from those days?

    Rob

Absolutely! How else are you gonna hear who's fussing, fighting, arguing, and cussing. Sometimes people ask questions too, like "where'd you learn to drive, you #@%*ing idiot!!". I keep mine on all the time and once in a while actually hear some useful information.

  10. Thanks, but I have to give thanks to Herb for all the off line support and guidance provided.

I'm going to order a convertible five, and sixteen gallon pail pump for gear lube later today. Never have had one for the shop. I have several transmissions that are either rebuilt, or I'd like to just drain and refill and bet a quart at at time would go slow going.

Gonna tear into the rears tonight or tomorrow to do it all over again.......

    Rob

I found a top with a hose connected to it at the parts store that works on gallon jugs, so you can use a gallon jug like the little quart squirt bottles.

Back in olden days when I was a youngster it was common to use a chisel to tighten and loosen those nuts, nobody had a socket that big then. I probably didn't do yours though, somebody else did that.

  11. I've got a Connex 3300HP now with an Astatic mike and Wilson 2000 antannae, but I always had good luck with the Cobras. Never had the backlit model or bluetooth enabled, but had a 25 and a 29 classic. I saw the 29 classics on sale at a truckstop somewhere a couple of weeks ago for $69.95. Spend that $20 to have it peaked and you've got a pretty good talking radio with not a lot of money invested. The 25 I had was actually the best talking radio I ever had, but I had a 150 watt linear on it.

Never had a stock Cobra mike last very long though.

ordred the Connex from here- they seem to have pretty good prices.

  13. ...(beware of A.K. Steel in middletown Oh.) And never ever try to cheat and use less chains or straps on a load because it will be tarped and no one can see it. A 48,000lbs coil will kill you..or ANY other load that gets awy from you. Be careful and good luck.

Any AK Steel (used to be Armco) plant is my least favorite place to load ever. The one in Butler, Pa. is no better, and the one in Ashland, Ky. is only slightly better. They suck to the highest level of sucktivity there is. Being an a-hole must be a requirement for working there. Hate to say it, but that's one company i'd like to see boarded up and rusting away, like the old Copperweld Steel mill in Warren, Ohio is now. I don't hate many things, but just mentioning AK Steel gets my bp up!

By the way, what IS in your 'fridge?

  14. How many times have we tried to warn you about gettin' mamma angry? You are not as atheletic as you were some years ago. I don't think you are faster than an angry frying pan.

so that would explain why Rob always wears this suit every time he so much as thinks about getting another truck.

  15. Tom now thats funny.....All I got to do is go get Rowdy Rebel with all his guns and tear Chuckie up! :thumb:

I'm ready to get on with draining the tranny and figure the best thing to do is drive the truck to get it hot but, can't get on the driveway yet. So since the tranny has an internal pump I wonder if just running it in the garage for 30 minutes will be adequate enough to drain both sumps, since the gear throwoff should be working while sitting.

    mike :D

I saw in one of my videos that they used to let the trans. warm up by putting the main in 2nd. gear and the aux. in neutral while the engine was warming up.

And you should hide if you see Chuck coming- he's prepared for anything.

  16. Can't wait to get my truck here and get started to work on it.

So in the mean time I've been shopping around for some deals on some of the essentials

So I found the most important part of the hole truck.

    The Hood Ornament

You're lookin' good so far! I need a set of those clearance lights too, but it's that "lack of funds" thing.

  17. Whats up Tom,

No one here has heard of 85w90 but ya can buy all day 80w90 or 85w140. I bought Shell since i'm kinda partial to it now. So I come home with 80w90. Started it up this morning and to my surprise "kinda" the shutter cylinder popped open like it's supposed to. So now I can put the shutters back on and the radiator shroud. One more week then, I can drive on my new driveway, can hardly wait..... Hey, when are we going to visit you know who?...I can see him now putting up xmas lights on the roof of the garage and house. Bet that would be a site to see.

    mike

I probably used 80/90 too, I just said 85/90 because Herb did and I figured he knew what he was talking about, where I just fake it. I bought gallon jugs of it and a top with a hose so you could use them like a squirt bottle.

And I happened to pass by Rob's house this week and snapped a picture-unfortunately it was too late to stop and say "howdy" cuz I had to be in Miami the next morning with that load of watermelons.

  18. I have inspected for the first time my transmission oil in the duplex. When I put my finger inside to see if the oil was near the filler plug....it was, but a strange thing I noticed was.....the oil was foamy with air and bubbles and the smell was of an old and whipped state of being. When I would start the truck it would start leaking oil where the flywheel or front shaft is located when the truck got warmed up or when I would drive it up and down the driveway. My question is can I use an oil with the oil that is now inside that will clean the old oil out of the transmission without damaging results to the gears? And what oil would ya recommend?

    THX

    mike :mack1:

mine was the same way, foamy, except it was low too. I pulled the drain plugs and refilled both boxes with new 85/90 gear oil, no problems since. I am gonna check my bellhousing bolts though, never thought of that before.

  19. Hey Larry,

The former owner replaced the whole floor with a solid piece of metal. So now I'll have to settle for an assistant. Nikki looks good on the ladder don't you think?.....but I can't figure why Rob would have caught that photo of her on the ladder and showed everyone? He musta had one of his moments.
