  1. I didn't get the chance to go and I agree on the 4K, I was thinking 3.5K to 4.5K. if it was as bad as claimed. If it really was 127K actual miles and showed it then the sky would've been the limit, just not by me.
  2. My memory is sometimes a little faulty and Gene was at Mass 10
  3. Sorry.... I hadn't seen your reply to this thread when I replied. Starting in the early 70's and thru the years I'll bet I probably bought 50 sets of interior and was most always satisfied with the craftsmanship, except for his insistence on using a different color piping around the edges He had a guy who ran the shop in the late 70's early 80's named Jimmy who definitely wasn't a people person. The first kit was for an F Model and after that I put it in most every F model that I owned and I feel pretty certain that they did the Evel Knievel F Model also.
  4. One of the problems with this is that you have inspectors with (maybe) a highschool education, interpreting regulations and laws written by so called educated, knowledgeable professional's who have had no real practical experience in their field As a result you are at the mercy of some usually incompetent over bearing cop with an attitude. Arbitrary inspections and weight restrictions are the cash cow for a lot a the small towns in Pa.
  5. The mans last name was Murphy and I think his first name was Gene.... It was my opinion as soon as I saw it that he had sewn it. He used to be at the Skelly Truck Stop in E Saint Louis. He had the patterns for most makes and models of trucks(except the time that I needed it for a Marmon) and would UPS most interiors in a couple of days. His trademark was to use a different color piping on all of his upholstery I ordered interiors from him for many of my F's and R's Models as well as other many other makes of trucks. He and I had a lot of discussions, with me trying to convince him that I wanted the same color piping as the interior color, lots of times with no success His display vehicle was an F Model cab.
  6. That was a pretty complicated looking setup... until I saw him engage the splitter, while still accelerating, and it was then I realized what it was he had for a transmission. In 83 we built a 359 Pete glider kit and since it was for extreme heavy haul we equipped it with a 15 over (which was my preferred transmission) and a manual 4speed auxiliary. It was very impressive to look at,but when someone asked me(and they often did) How in the world do you shift it ,since it has 60 possible gear combinations? My simple answer..." leave the aux in direct and shift it like a 10 spd. " The only exception is when it's under extremely heavy loads, you might have to use the aux when starting off on a hill,or you need to catch half a gear to maintain speed. In deep reduction and under under(two unders) you could walk as fast as it would run at 2100 RPM. "Just because something looks complicated, doesn't always mean that it really is".
  7. Sorry, I guess that I must've concentrated more on the term rod bolts, which I took to be part of the reciprocating assembly . I guess I'd never heard rod bolt used in relation to the block and only when referring to the rods.
  8. I think it's on netflix
  9. What's a Head N----- In Charge??? They are doing every thing in their power to destroy the greatest nation to ever exist in this world. There are far to many people who vote for a living as opposed to those who work for everything they have. What has happened to common sense, do they still allow it. When Obama ran the first time I said that it was a referendum on the white male in this country and I was right. They stack the Supreme Court with people with a lifetime appointment and carte blanche to turn our constitution up side down .Why have so many young Americans given their lives to protect our way of life yet we allow those who contribute nothing to elect their own unqualified sycophant to the greatest honor that our country can bestow on an American citizen .And they require no proof from him that he even is one. "WHO IS JOHN GALT" ? (If you don't know to what I refer google that question and find out) There was a woman born in Russia in 1905 by the name of Ayn Rand who foretold in the 40's and early 50's what our countries future would hold for us . That when thru GUILT over something that they want us to believe, and that is that we bear the responsibility for something our ancestors may or may not have done. So that we've (those who have allowed it) enabled the looters to rise to power and enact the laws and regulations that they would use to destroy our economy and ultimately our country and take our freedom from us in the name of compassion, fairness and progressive politics. The Socialist Model has been tried all over the world and has never worked (look at Cuba, N Korea and a whole lot of Europe) yet it's always left the people who they claim to want to help in worse shape than ever, while the ruling Elite deceivers are not held to any form of accountability for their actions cause they were done for "The good of the people". Sound Familiar?????
  10. In reality, the 237 is no boat anchor by any stretch of the imagination.... It definitely was a torque monster in it's day, unfortunately it's day came and went many years ago Once you've witnessed the torque rise and I think it's something like 53% it's a very impressive little engine. But that said,if given the choice I would still choose a 300 or maybe a 300+ or even a 350 for hauling timber.
  11. When Jimmy Carter got on TV and announced deregulation, I turned to my wife and said.... "There goes trucking as we know it" The length laws and the inconsistent and arbitrary laws from state to state dictated that most fleets run cabovers, the F Model was one of the most prolific of the fleet trucks. You couldn't travel anywhere in this country, on any highway or Interstate, and not see either an F model or a Transtar was the most common class 8 truck in use. Thru the years I've had more than my share of both Transtars and F Models .(more F's than Transtars) Even today when I see a good looking decked out cabover it brings back fond and nostalgic memories of those not so distant " good old days" of the past. When most any truckdriver could tell you, not only the type of engine, but also the rated HP, the series and model of transmission and sometimes even the rear end differential ratio, of the truck that he was DRIVING (as opposed to sitting in and holding the steering wheel) like most, but not all, of todays " so called drivers. "
  12. Do you know what Atlas did when he could no longer carry the weight of the world on his shoulders? HE SHRUGGED!!!!!
  13. I've had V 8's and I've also had 1693TA's and I loved the sound of the V8 but I really loved the torque and pulling power of the 1693, just not the 3/12 to 4 MPG .I remember an old man(or so I thought at the time) from Pa., who had the best running V8 equipped F Model that I'd ever encountered, so I kept track of it and bought it from him when he retired. Although with the right driver(it had a triplex) it could run & hide from 335's 350's and most other engines of that era it couldn't pull with my 1693 TA when we got into the mountains I remember in the early seventies when all I could do in my F models was say"WOW" when those Monfort (Circus Wagons) blew by me.
  14. If you were driving a Mack In '73 chances are the Monfort lane was foreign territory to you.
  15. The 413 had 4 bolt mains and I'm pretty sure that's what you were referring to,cause rod bolts can't be bolted to the block. The 413 hotrod engine was equipped with the legendary Cross Ram manifold and was quite formidable and was an excellent drag engine. I think this engine was introduced in '59 but I'm not sure but I believe Mack started making them available in '66.
  16. I was wondering if anyone caught on to the fact that a 413 was a Wedge and not a Hemi. I had a 426 Hemi with dual 4's in a Charger in '69 so I use to be somewhat familiar with Hemi's . But I was a" Mack Nut" even then,(that was the year I got out of the Army and bought my first Mack) and I haven't owned a Hemi since 71 but I've still got my passion for Macks though.
  17. I've got one that I removed from a gen set with very low hours. I've got several older low hour engines that I removed from gen sets that I have bought thru the years, Got one diesel that was manufactured by the White Motor Co. It's the only one that I have ever seen.
  18. Sharp little truck in spite of the Double Breasted Yamaha.
  19. Very impressive, It's amazing to see that one enthusiast has such a large collection of vintage information. Please keep em' coming!
  20. Prototypes, they were never put into production. Most, if not all of the major truck Manufacturers built a prototype turbine
  21. Can you imagine a 3208 Cat in the same truck? Talk about from one extreme( the KT) to the ridiculous(the 3208).
  22. The KT's were King of the road in the 70' and 80's
  23. I noticed that you are from Williamsburg, and if that DM has been used locally in the Ky. and Tn. area around you they use alot of salt on the roads in the winter. So be sure to check the front cab mounts, because the floors and mounts on DM's are very susceptible to rust. As for the fuel economy of a 237 vs a 300, a whole lot depends on the driver and how heavy his foot is on the throttle, and with a 237 you will spend most of the time with your foot flat on the floor. The mountains in your area are pretty steep so I personally would choose a 300 over a 237 if i was hauling the kind of weight you will be required to. Oh! and a Jake or at least a Dynatard would be mighty handy too.
  24. What is the most unusual engine Mack installed in their trucks? I'll start it: I had a Cruiseliner with a 3208 Cat and Allison transmission combo it was a good looking truck,Black exterior, Aluminum wheels, Alum fuel tanks butonce you started the engine it was always good for one thing, and that one thing was a conversation piece and a source of bewilderment from Mack enthusiasts.
