Keep in mind both rims; inside and out side on both sides were covered in gear oil including the drums and lining. DOT will have a field day. Driver was foreign (Indian) and just wanted to make it back to Ontario which is 5-6 hours away. So I loosened the pipe plug and filled her up. The rear went out so they pulled the axles and trying to limp it home to get worked on by the owners instead of a dealer charging $150 per hour plus paying for a weeks worth of perdeim and hotel for the driver I am sure there has been worse road side repairsI did similar before with a m931 in Iraq during the first gulf war ended pulling both front axles shafts and grease bearings then stuck the caps back on run the truck like that for another 4 months before heading to Saudi Arabia did it on the side of the road with some basic tools in the Army it is called bdar battlefield damage assessment and repair 2 Quote Robert"I reject your reality and substitute my own." The owner of the fleet, which I don't know the size, did not want to pay to change out the broken axle. That's what his driver said anyways. There is a difference from field repairs in combat compared to running this truck across the border with brake lining and drums dripping oil because they used plywood and a dab of silicon. They prob operate like this in Iraq or even south of the border in Mexico. This is why DOT is so hot and heavy on everyone including the good guys who take care of their trucks. This truck in question was really on its last leg, mismatched tread, little cuts in the tires, grab handles taped on, side fairings tore, and leaking oil everywhere. They just ran the truck and filled it with fuel when it ran out.... thomastractorsvc Posted July 3, 2014 Share Posted July 3, 2014 The Mack dealer charges $165 and couple of the other franchise shops charge a little less but unless it's a mom and pops it's at least $150 most of the moms and pops are $100 per hour or more and unless you know someone most of the tire shops are at least that much to swap a tire out.
