  1. I got the old packing out of it and am cleaning everything up to put it back. the old packing is dried out bad and is only about half as thick as the new.it has 5 pieces in it and its only as thick as 3 of the new pieces like I said earlier the adjustments were run up as far as they could be and the chief of evarts fire dept said when they worked on it the last time they only put 2 new rings in it because they couldn't get the rest out of it. its been a pain in the ass getting it out but I have learned a easy way to get it out if I ever have to do it again. and I'm sure I will as one of the other trucks is leaking almost as bad as this one was. as for the vacuum test I know it has 1 bad valve I'm going to have to rebuild on the deck gun but I can cap it off to try the vacuum test.
  2. the ring was tightened to the max and it is leaking pretty bad also. I'm sure it had a lot to do with the u joint going bad it was leaking so bad when pumping it would have water running out from under the truck.
  3. what is the best way to remove pump packing on our 87 cf with waterous pump I have the removal tools but I cant get it to screw into the packing good enough to pull it out and the fact I have big hands don't help either. can you remove the pump shaft bearing on the front and gain easier access to the packing or will that be more trouble than trying to remove replace it with it still in place? I still have the drive shaft out of it for easier access to the packing. thanks joe
  4. I am going to have to get out my torches and cut the u joint out of the rear of the driveshaft we have beat and heated and beat some more on this thing and it will not move I am guessing that the cups are rusted in the yoke and will not move so I guess she will get 2 new u joints and the pump re packed before I put her back in service. I was going to wait on the pump re packing for a bit but it is leaking pretty good and the adjusting collars are run up as tight as they can be so I guess now is as good of a time as any to replace it so be prepared to answer a few more questions on that as well. thank you all for your help joe
  5. hellllllllllllllp I have another question what is the easiest way to change the u joint on this damed thing on the transmission side it has the big 8 bolt flange and on the transfer case side it has a regular yoke and the driveshaft is only 7 inches long is it easier to take the rear u joint out too and put it back with just the crosses and then install the cups or would it be easier to loosen the transfer case and slide it back about 1/2 inch to get the clearance it needs just to put the front one in. I'm about to pull my hair out
  6. thanks for the help on things to look for I found the front u joint between the trans and transfer case is bad( the pump packing leaking aint helping things as water is dripping down on it ) so I will hopefully get it changed tomorrow thanks again for the ideas of things to look for I never thought about a u joint doing that but ive not seen everything either lol thanks again joe
  7. we have our weekly meeting in a couple of hours so I personally will climb under it and check the u joints (they were supposed to be greased 2 weeks ago ) if that don't help I will try and get some of the lucas and put in it and hope that does it. thanks
  8. it feels like driving with tire chains on when it is doing it
  9. what would cause our 87 CF with a Allison auto to jump and jerk in 1st gear when pulling out of the station or on a hill? it only does it in 1st gear it shifts fine and is smooth as silk in all other gears. it started doing this all of the sudden last week. fliud level is right on the full mark. thanks joe
  10. this rig is only about 45 minutes from me if anyone is wanting to bid on it I actually thought about bidding on it to make a tanker for our department.
  11. that's what he is going to do we cut the ends off of both shafts
  12. its looking like we are going to make a trip to the drive line repair shop. no one makes a adaptor joint as I have been informed by spicer/dana and eaton does not show a part number for a pinion yoke to fit the smaller u joint we have so we are going to have to get a driveshaft made with the small u joint on 1 end and the big one on the other. which should be easy as both drive shafts are 4 inch tubes. thanks for the link j hancock . that's where I got the number to call spicer/dana .
  13. do they make a bastard size u joint that measures ( without the cups ) 5inch X6 3/4 we just changed the rear end in our ford tanker it had a 18,000lb eaton in it we replaced it with a 23,000lb eaton rear end. if they do does anyone know the part number? thanks joe
  14. that would be a nice truck to have our 2,000 gallon stainless tank on for a tanker to support our CFs
  15. the coal trucks siting at the huddle house sat there for a while and then just disappeared a lot of trucks in Harlan were sold and shipped to other countries. the truck I sold to a local guy ended up going to south America for some kind of mining.
  16. I tried that but might not of done it enough ill try it some more tomorrow if the ice and snow don't keep me in
  17. How do you bleed the air out of the steering system on a CF 600 ? we had to move one of our trucks around to put tire chains on it today and the steering was hard to turn almost like it was locked until I revved the engine up pretty high and then it started steering fine I shut it down and checked the oil in it and almost put a gallon in it and now you have to rev it up to get it to steer when you first start it. I hope its not something worse than air locked. thanks joe
  18. I am trying to add the link to the video and article but I cant figure out how to do it the web address is wymt.com if you would like to watch the video and read the article joe
  19. the department this truck went to was in bad need of it they did not have a running truck and we (yocum creek ) loaned them our 1967 F 700 ford to keep the state from shutting the doors. if they had of been closed down there community would not of had any fire protection until we would of got there which is about 10 to 15 minutes away. being we run mutual aid with them anyway at least they were on scene spraying water when we got there. now they have this truck and there Chevrolet pumper running again they should be able to be more aggressive with the water until our tanker and engine get there.
  20. were slowly building a little New York here on Cloverfork thanks to Howard and Don Yocum Creek Fire Dept has 3 CFs Upper Cloverfork has 3 CFs and now Lower Cloverfork has 1. now if we can get a couple R models for the tankers we will be set for life.
  21. Howard is a great guy I am glad I had the chance to meet and get to spend time with him over the last few days
  22. Thanks to the efforts of Howard Peiffer, the Palm Coast Fire Department, the Palm Cost city council ,and Don Holden the Lower Cloverfork Fire Department got a 1986 Mack donated to them. this effort by all of them to help our community is greatly appreciated by all of the members and all of the neighboring fire departments.
  23. if I could post pictures on here I would take a pic of it but I cant post them for some reason
  24. are you talking about the valve that bolts to the steamer and has a wheel to open and close it for the front suction
  25. I was wondering if the impeller and shaft in a 1,000 G P M waterous 2 stage pump is the same as the 1,250 G P M. we are parting out a 1980 cf that was totaled by the insurance company because of a busted pump housing and pipework. the frame is also in bad shape so parting her out to keep our other 3 running is our plan. and I want to keep everything that I can off of her. thanks in advance joe
