  1. Well said, a bit off topic but to take off where your last paragraph left off, funny story and a true story. I had shoulder surgery at the end of Feb and was on disability till about Aug when the Dr. finally cleared me to return to work. During the time on disability the place I was working at was facing tough times and fired me. Which means in order to keep up with my physical therapy...I now had to buy my own health insurance...on what the state disability was giving me. (good thing for being smart enough to have a savings account.) Anyway in the time when I have been "down and out" I had registered as an LLC to start a rubbish removal company and was making some extra cash "taking out garbage" while looking for a real job. Last week I finally got a call to be interviewed for a GREAT job working at a truck dealer that sells and services, Volvo, Autocar, Freightliner, Western Star etc...while I was having my interview with the manager, the guy hears my whole story and goes "Hey when does your unemployment run out?" I said.."soon, but I think I can get an extension..and I'll probably need it" He then told me this..which, man...if my old man were around and he heard this, his head would explode...the manager then says "you know, I had a few guys come in here looking for work, and when I said I would give them a chance, they asked if I could wait until their unemployment ran out....they actually DONT want to work until they absolutley cant get more money from the Govt"......the rest of my personal story should be posted somewhere else in the forums, but with what youre saying about extensions and stuff you are right on the money. I have been on my ass since Feb, working on the side, saving for the Christmas season, saving for bills, saving for a roll off so I can get my side work legitimate and busting my ass trying to get a "real" job....I cant believe their people out there who can live off the few hundred bucks a week that dont want to work and are being rewarded for it!!...Drives me friggin mental!! Like my dad used to say..."some people just need a boot in the ass".
  2. Thanks for the info...yeah man, the websites selling em are all comparing it to the Connex 3300 but saying the G.L. is actually a few bucks cheaper.
  3. Stupid question Rowdy...does that General Lee have a weatherband on it??...The only reason I ask is because when I shop online, the other radios all make a point of saying the weatherband is a feature, the General Lee says "6 band positions". So I'm unsure if that is a feature that comes with it. Thanks in advance..
  4. I think people that buy new are generally between a rock and a hard place. Need the equipment but cant come up with the cash to buy it out right...get snagged in with some low down payment and can afford a monthly bill, so they go that way. I did that once with a motorcycle...by the time I paid if off I coulda bought a house!
  5. Just watched the review of the General LEE CB Radio...the packaging, General LEE sticker you get with it...all seems very "patriotic"...he spins it around and it says "made in malaysia"....sigh...thats a post for another thread! If the Cobra 29 LTD with Bluetooth is durable enough..it might be my pick.
  6. Man that truck in your pic is a tough one!!

  7. Hi, do you ever do any Drag Racing with the Macks? Any Diesel National stuff??...Had to ask!!

  8. I do have a Nextel 2 way as well..but some of the guys that show up on a seasonal route...may not be showing up the next day, plus my Nextel is via Blackberry..which is almost ridiculous with the buttons and fussing. Its nice...but during leaves, Im in and out of the truck, getting dirty..I almost dont want to mess up the blackberry. The CB is good because its in the truck, not the workers hands...which means its stayin in the truck!! (you get some interesting people on leaf route here in NJ) I also used to go off road in my Jeep and before that had a K5 Blazer for mud. I had a G.E. in there that was pretty good, but lost the antenna constantly, even when it was screwed to my mirror it got snapped off. CB Radio was really good in that situation as well.
  9. Being born in the late 70's...CBs were kinda on their way out as far as being a novelty and things like that..I think anyway. My dad kept one in his 74 Monte Carlo and I always thought it was cool... Then as time went on, I worked for the Dept. Of Public Works and all the trucks are equipped with CBs, it made life so much easier to just pick up the mic and figure out where you were needed or hear what was going on. Now being involved with dump trucking and stuff...a cell phone blows compared to a CB...if you're on a leaf route in a big town like Newark NJ, and basically its like 5 tandems and a bucket loader..it makes life waaaaaay easier to just pick up the mic, say it once and have everyone hear it. Not to mention its still cool as hell and lines from Smokey & The Bandit always sound better over CB radio
  10. It looks like a cross between a PT Cruiser on steroids and a proto type for a Hot Wheel that never made it. That is one incredibly ugly truck!! But hey, to each their own, if you dig it and it gets the job done.....
  11. For all you Veterans out there, which brand and model do you think is the best bang for the buck? I will eventually mount this in a R model dump used for local leaf/dirt route and until then may throw it in my Jeep for the heck of it....your prefrences?
  12. Faaaaaaaaaantastic info!! Thanks very much Rob! Jess
  13. Hi, excuse the question if it seems a little silly, I'm new here. What is the largest engine used in R Models? Throught the 1970's to be exact. Also on a side note, what is the best aftermarket exhaust, performance wise, that would go with such an engine. Thanks in advance!! Jess
  14. No shame in a truck like that! That is what I like to call a "bad-mamma-jamma!"....awesome truck! Still looks tough at a stand still with some "time" on it. Congrats on the new mirrors and ornaments you got for it...look foward to seeing more! --Jess
  15. Is there any definitive exhaust stacks/pipes for R models?. I saw a guy with an Autocar that said he had a single stack that was 5" and went to dual 8". He uses the truck for basic dumping and also runs it recreationally at the diesel nationals. Also, as far as engine performance goes, I will soon be in the market for a truck that will work, but I'd like to try my hand at some of the drag racing at the diesel nats. What is the best engine to get the best of both worlds? I need it to be a work truck 1st and foremost...but if I can squeeze a little more "oompf!" outta it just for fun, what do you suggest? Best motor to start with? And easiest, most bolt on power would be best. Again its gonna be a work truck, so I dont want to lay it up with major internal work. Thanks in advance to anyone who might answer these questions! --Jess
  16. Hi guys, I just found this site in my searches, and after looking around a bit I thought it might be a great place to sign up! I'm 32 yrs old, living in sunny North Jersey and love Mack Trucks. I dont own a truck yet, but right now I have a small rubbish removal business and after this horrible economy bounces back my goal is to have a roll off and a dump. I should say that its Mack DUMP trucks I love. My friends dad had about 5 of them, all R model and DMs. I had been wanting to get my Class B and was hating life working in a place that sandblasted old forklifts. After hrs a few years back I would go down to his shop which was pretty much were I grew up, and just hung around the trucks, spinning a wrench when I could. The more I hung around the trucks the more I started looking at them the same way I did muscle cars and the dirtbikes of my youth...just an awesome machine. I got my class B and was all legal, perfect timing too. I got a call the Sunday before Thanksgiving asking if I could drive a tandem on the leaf route for a day. I called out sick to my regular job and got down to the shop on Monday morning. When I got there 2 trucks were idiling in the dark cold autumn morning. It was picture perfect...my town puts up their Christmas ornaments on the street lights pretty early (which is fine by me!)...I could hear the rumble of diesel motors, with the twinkle of Christmas lights gleaming on top of them in the dark of 5:30 AM. I got myself inside the warm cab and put her in gear...nothing, I mean nothing felt better then being in that R Model following one right in front of me down the streets I grew up on, under those beautiful Christmas lights. I worked one day on the leaf route and realized..since high school I dont think I was ever really "happy" at a job, and I LOVED what I did today!! Since then I have been a Mack fan!!...Unfortunatley he sold most of his trucks so I dont get to be around them, but I do have a small business that I'm trying to expand every day...I'm hoping in the next little while I can find an older R Model in working condition, do a restoration and throw some aftermarket goodies on it...then put her to work!! Thanks for reading this, look forward to chatting with you all! Jesse
