  1. The WORSE part of this situation is that 200 million plus citizens can't or won't get together long enough to fire all 435 of the worthless bastards, and start all over.

amen to that. you would think we could ban together once to fix our screwed up govt that our "leaders" have created.

  2. a chicken and a horse that lived on a farm were out walkin one day. the horse went thru a soft spot in the field and started sinking. he begged the chicken to go back to the farm and get the farmer to bring his tractor and pull him out before he sunk any farther. so the chicken races back to the house but the farmer was gone with the tractor. so the chicken sees the farmers harley in the garage. he grabs a rope and the harley and speeds back to the field. he drives around the hole until the rope is within reach of the horse. he manages to pull the horse free from the quicksand hole.

the next day the chicken and the horse are out walking again and this time the chicken gets too close to a big mud hole and gets stuck in the middle. he begs the horse to help him since he saved the horse the day before. so the horse straddles the hole with his four legs and lets down his horse dong. the chicken asks," what do you want me to do with that?" the horse says just grab hold and i will get you out. so the chicken grabs hold cuz he doesnt see any other way out and the horse picks him out of the mudhole.

the moral of the story: if you have a long dong you dont need a harley to pick up chicks. B)

  4. a first grade teacher, ms. brooks, was having trouble with one of her students. the teacher asked, "harry, what's your problem?"

harry answered, "i'm too smart for the first grade. my sister is in the third grade and i'm smarter than she is. i think i should be in the 3rd grade too!"

ms. brooks had had enough. she took harry to the principle's office.

while harry waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. the principal told ms. brooks he would give the boy a test. if he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the 1st grade and behave. she agreed.

harry was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

    principal: "what is 3 x 3?"

    harry: "9."

    principal:"what is 6 x 6?"

    harry:"36."

and so it went with every question the principal thought a 3rd grader should know.

the principal looks at ms. brooks and tells her, "i think harry can go to the 3rd grade."

ms. brooks says to the principal, "let me ask him some questions."

the principal and harry both agreed.

ms brooks asks, " what does a cow have four of that i have only two of?"

    harry, after a moment, "legs."

ms brooks,"what is in your pants that you have but i do not have?"

the principal wondered why she would ask such a question!

    harry replied"pockets."

ms brooks:" what does a dog do that a man steps into?"

    harry"pants."

ms brooks:"what starts with a C, ends with a T, is hairy, oval, delicious and contains thin whitish liquid?"

    harry:"coconut."

the principal sat forward with his mouth hanging open.

ms brooks:"what goes in hard and pink and comes out soft and sticky?"

the principals eyes opened really wide and before he could stop the answer, harry replied, "bubble gum."

ms brooks:"what does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down, and a dog does on three legs?"

    harry:"shake hands."

    the principal was trembling.

ms brooks:"what word starts with an 'F' and ends in 'K' that means a lot of heat and excitement?"

    harry:"firetruck"

the principal breathed a sigh of relief and told the teacher, " put harry in the fifth grade, i got the last seven questions wrong............."

  5. now that is a well trained dog.

we had a great dane while growing up. dad drove an el camino. that dog rode with him all the time. she would jump right over the side of the truck. didnt need to put the tailgate down. then she would stand in the back with her head sticking over the cab while going down the road.

  6. It is hard to answer your families question as to why anyone sane would have drugg in four fourty year old trucks but here goes!

I have collected many different mechanical things from mechanic's tool to gas engines to tractors and small crawlers and the family has humored my need for old iron. They did not know that deep down I had always admired B model Macks and wanted to own one.

I am the county prosecuting attorney and happened to be at the right place at the right time. I was in the Sheriff's jail lobby and a local tow truck service owner stuck his head in the door and said "Hey they are trying to get me to buy Larry Reed's Mack trucks for junk and they are too big for me . Larry was deceased and his family was tired of mowing around the three Macks in a hay meadow. I contacted them and started to try to outbid the junk men and save the Macks!

I got directions to the hay field and there sat three Macks were all in a row. Two single axle dumps I call "Red" and "Blue " Both B61T's and a cab and frame B613LST with no wheels or rear axles. The inspection stickers and fuel stickers were 1992 so the girls had then set for about fourteen years . They were a sight to see with all tires either busted , low or sunk in the ground. My neighbor thought I was crazzy to even make a offer but after some back and forth negoitiation, I got a phone call that all four Macks were mine . The fourth Mack was up a country road off in the briars but I will save that for later in the story.

"Blue" looked like the best chance to run as she was complete. My convoy of friends complete with tools ,fuel a 1 ton winch truck and an air compresser descended on Blue. We airred up what tires that would hold air and got all four corners up with some dead duels with no hope. When the tube comes out the side of the tire is a bad sign! Ten gallon of new fuel in the tank and pumped up to the pump and the lines , we were ready to try to pull her to start.

Great plan if all three of the vehicles could pull out a Mack still sunk rim deep in the pasture. No such luck as the winch just pull the rescue vehicles to the Mack. There were no trees in the pasture field but there stood an nonconnected utility pole at the very limit of our chains and winch cable. We finally got Blue free of mother earth.

I did not know a lot but I did ask the question ," Would it not be a good idea to make sure the clutch works before we pull this monster and she comes to life and runs over our winch truck? Everyone agreed so we got her to a slight grade on the pasture top and got the clutch unstuck. In went the fuel kill knob and we were ready to see if she would start. In hind sight it would have been a good idea to pressurize the brake system and test that but I was not that smart on air brakes.

My friend Doug was the driver and I was the spotter as he put her in a middle gear and let her roll about ten feet and let out the clutch. Blue coughed a few times and let out some blue smoke with no death rattles coming from her. We were smart enough to pull her real slow in gear to check for any thing stuck like a valve stuck or a bad rod knock before this live test. A twenty five foot roll and she spit out a mouse nest the size of your head out of what was left of the grass burner exhaust and she roared to life in a cloud of blue from the old fuel in the tank.

Well I now had a running Mack going down the pasture with my friend at the wheel heading for the steep pasture bank , the county road and the Pocatalico River on the other side. I thought that this may have not been such a good idea after all . There was room to turn on a flat but before that the truck stopped on its own "Hey this thing has brakes and oil pressure, I am going to your farm" ,Doug exclaimed! I improved the brake sutiation when I closed the fully open water drain at the air tank that was blowing wide open.

Blues trip home was uneventfull untill curosity got the cat and Doug just had to tromp down on the go pedal and she come to life going sideways heading over the road bank. He kept her in the road steering for all he was worth and did not try her out again. Blue has a different dump bed on her and I will treat her to some tires that have tread deeper than the weather cracks in the tires and hold air.

"Red " came home on a tandem wrecker with no problem other that the one hundred yard path that I got to reseed in the meadow ( road trucks do not like pastureland.) Red's engine is a basket cas so she is for parts right now

"Old Bits and Pieces" the LST got to ride a roll back truck to the farm and she is about gone but a friend needs a frame with a title to build him a Mack in the future so she may get a second chance.

That leaves the " Ugly Mack" an single axle intregal sleeper road tractor that was parked in the briars and brush almost out of sight. We winched her out to the road with me steering with one hand and beating to death wasps by the dozens with my ballcap. Tip to learn was that wasps do not like noise or movement and it would be a real good idea to carry hornet spray with you in the summertime! I survived and did'nt get stung but I was ready to get out ! The sleeper cab is a 1961 model so my Mack handle became 61sleepercab. The other three trucks are 1959 models and all trucks with transmissions are duplex.

Blue and Ugly Mack both yard drives but have a long way to be road worthy. I think they can be saved from the car crusher!

I hope you get a chuckle out of this story. I want to thank everyone who have answered my dumb questions of the site . I will update any progress as it comes . I posted some picturs on the site . 61sleepercab (mark)

i'm having so much fun with my first one. cant imaqine getting multiple trucks. i'm with you on one thing though, i hate to think about adding on to my barn again. ajt

  7. I haven't heard Johnny Beauchamps' name in a lot of years. Don't know if he is still racing or not. I've not been around any of that since the early 80's. I do remember he was fairly aggressive in a stock car.

I moved onto winged sprints about 1980 as the speeds were greater as were the purses. My wife drove push truck/recovery, (as did I) and we painted many, many cars that ran that circuit. I had some very strong engines in my personal vehicles build by some of the best mechanics and machinists in the area. This was of course when a competitive engine could be built for less than $3000.00.

    Ahhh, the days, the memories......

    Rob

ahhh, the memories of personal cars. one of my favorite was when i was 18 yrs old. i bought a monte carlo from a family friend. i assumed it just had a 350. but when i went to look at it, i about crapped when under the hood was a 454. man, we had a lot of fun tearing up the roads in that. i couldn't hardly pay them quick enough. it took awhile to get all the carbon blowed out of the 4 barrel. but when we did..............

  8. As far as I know copper tubing is still DOT Legal. Last I saw McMaster Carr carried DOT legal copper tubing and fittings but now only appears to sell nylon tubing and fittings. Probably due to demand. You don't see copper because it is expensive and not as easy to run as nylon.

well i cant hardly see doing anything the easy way!

  9. It's not going to matter much unless you all are going to truck shows and be judged by the best of the best trucks. They will make you feel right at home by using the ( WHITE GLOVE ) method on your truck and count off on cleanliness and if you have the correct bolts etc. etc. and the right shade of paint for the right year of truck. And I should mention that they will use judges that have been judging trucks for years. You will go home feeling great about your $100, 000.00 dollar plus truck. And just think about that BIG trophy that cost them $30.00 dollars at the trophy house to buy for you to go home and collect dust on it and the ole lady gets to dust it off for you. I've been there done that and the twenty or so I have, have not seen daylight since 1989 from still in the moving boxes packed away in my basement. It's just like sex.....feels good for the moment and it's gone and ya can't wait to do it again.

So go and spend some money.....they ( Mafia American Business) need it worse than you do.

    Good Day and Happy Motoring

    mike :D

since i am just a contractor attempting my first restoration i dont think i will be entering any judging shows. i do find all this information very helpful in getting the truck to the condition that i envision though. it will make a great parade truck for years to come as i live in a rural area. most all the neighboring towns have some type of celebration in the summer with a parade incorporated in it. this will give me a lot of oppurtunity to get the truck out and enjoy it.

  10. Rob,

It has a Garmin 530 with WAAS. The cruise I gave is economy. Normal is 162 and Maximum is 169 True at 7,500. I'm going out to see how everything works and to see if I like it well enough to make the sacrifice. I love my low wing but this plane has more features. Also I will be able to fly into smaller airstrips at a slower decend speed. I'll keep you posted as to what I do.

Oh yes, Climb is 115 at 25'' MP , Prop at 2500, Mixture 13 GPH, best of all I can cruise at 7 GPH leaning her back. Set back and watch for traffic although i'll be with Flight Following.

    mike :)

    :mack1:

i'm with you, i like the low wings. my brother and i owned an archer for a few years. we dont have a plane right now though. if we could ever get more free time we would probably consider it again. it would go good with the airstrip in my front yard.

  11. Here are the numbers off the can I bought.Delfleet Mid Tier Oem code10340 PPG Green Metallic. I have seen enough B models to know this. :chili::chili::chili: There is more than one shade of green Paint

i wondered about different shades since this color ran so many years. i should be getting paint this week. i dont know what manufacturer my paint guy is getting yet though for the interior. sounds like i made a good choice to just match a panel.

  12. It is not hard at all. The polyester cloth type is available in a multitude of colors and will stretch over existing fittings, then shrink back to original size. One is basically unable to tell it wasn't placed over the bare tubing, then the fittings added.

The reinforced cotton/asphalt based type that is original to the truck would require the flare fittings be removed as it does not stretch near as much.

The actual name of the product is wire "sleeving"

    Rob

thanks, i'll look into some sleeving as an option. its very interesting to find out about the history of how the truck was assembled and what options are available today.

  13. I took a piece of the door off and went to my local PPg refinish center and they were able to come up with a color that is dead on it!

i'm in that process of matching interior paint now too. i havent had much luck finding a paint code from mack that my paint mixer could match with his info. so i took a trim piece in to match. would be nice to have paint code from ppg or dupont or somewhere.

  14. Aj,

If your lines and hoses are as good as you say they are then why not set them aside and use them later after your resto work is finished? Some people like plastic some like flex and some like copper or brass. If you are going for broke then the best is as deep as your pocketbook. Colors are a personal choice as some people like Neon Green. Those hoses ought to standup and be seen then.

    mi2centsworth B)

    mike

    mike,

thanks for the advice. it just got me to thinking when part of the lines are still cloth covered and part of them are copper because of deteriation of the cloth. if i was to make everything look the same i would probably strip all the coating off that's left and paint them.

  15. There may be some restrictions on using the original copper air lines.

I don't know that to be a fact so you might want to check with your local DOT

    before going any further.

If a vehicle is licensed as an antique or "historical", the restrictions may not apply.

    Just a thought -

    Paul Van Scott

i dont foresee any reason for the truck to ever come under inspection. just curious as to how different people have finished their airlines on their projects. whether it be stripped and cleared, or painted frame color, or whatever. i assume once the cloth covering has deteriated that you cant replicate that again? i have some lines that the cloth covering is in great shape. my battery cables are cloth covered and although dirty in spots, look really good for originals. my first thought with this truck was to return it as close as i could to original with my limited knowledge capabilities. this is where i welcome advice and/or opinions.

  16. i have the cab off of the frame and looking for opinions on what to do with the airlines. it looks like a lot of them were cloth covered. were all the lines covered originally? or were some painted? what do you think looks best for a restoration? our main use for this truck will be for local parades, advertising, and etc.

  17. Most Mack trucks that I have been around use a 1" diameter, 36 spline count shaft without taper. I do not have the correct puller and have always placed a flat steel disc in the center of the steering wheel with the retainer nut backed off till the end of threads. With upward knee pressure on the rim from the backside, a quick burp with the air hammer and the wheel is free of the splines no matter how tight it was initially. The rapid vibration combined with the force of impact does the trick.

    Works for me.

I don't know anything about "guruship".

    Rob

    rob,

i'm just a newbie, but you do seem to have a response of some kind to almost all topics.
