  1. If you look closely, all the tires have "squish" to them. That is heavy.

    Rob

You should see how they size the tires for the load. Those are only small 17.5's designed to carry a little over 4000 lbs at HIGHWAY speeds. But since these monster setups rarely go over 5MPH, you can put a hell of a lot more weight on a tire at lower speeds. I believe those tires are carrying somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000+ pounds! Read that in a brochure from Nicolas, a company that builds those types of hydraulic platform trailers. Those trailer also self level front to back and side to side. so going up an incline, the trailer will have the front most axles low to the ground while the rear most axles are extended. Also same for side-side. Wild stuff.

  2. That looks like a piece called a Tru-Hitch. It is a nice unit because it puts the towed unit weight on the 5th wheel where it belongs, not a pivot point behind the truck. I've seen pics in towing magazines of twin screw tractors picking up cement mixers and trash trucks without being overweight or too light in the front end.

Yup I was going to say the same thing too, tru-hitch. Basically it works like an underlift, the front wheels/steer axle rests on the front of the boom close to the goose neck. Then at the rear of the boom there are clevises that you chain to the frame rails. So when you lift the goose neck, the boom lifts the front wheels but the rear of the boom wants to stay put on the ground since the 5th wheel is a hinge. So the chains tied around the frame rails start to lift the rear of the boom and now you have converted the truck/tractor into a trailer. The weight actually goes on the pin instead of creating a see-saw effect like that of a regular wrecker.

Here are pictures I took at '09 and '10 macungie of how the setup works:

This is a frame clamp at the end of the boom, chains can also be used like I mentioned above.

Overall its a pretty sweet setup. Would be a great way to move antique trucks around (as long as the tires hold.)

  3. I fell for an April fools today and so did a coworker. One coworker came inside from smoking a cigarette and told me he heard a plane crash at the nearby airport and saw smoke billowing up, I ran out to check but saw nothing and then it dawned on me. My friend and coworker came into the room I was working in sat down and told me he was just pranked big time. He said his girlfriend called sounding very upset and told him she was pregnant. She then said she was moving back in with her mother across the country. He was distraught for about half an hour until she called back and said "april fools!".

  4. This is my thinking why they came out with the medium duty granite. To make it less exspensive for poeple that cant affrord the hd grantie and can buy the md grantie and have the same looks. Thses days its all about the price so they can sell more. Less is more! Does anybody know on here if the mack Grantite sales went down? Also will this sleeper be avialable for the HD grantie? Also a two piece windshield for for the Titan? Why this option and what is the purpose of a two piece windshield for the Titan? Maybe mackpro can shed some light on this post. Thanks.

Terry E Davis of Johnson City NY

It is a great idea to make an affordable mack for those who might want a single axle box truck or flat bed wrecker. to me but I still think they should shorten the hood and put it up against the Peterbilt 335 and the Kenworth K300.

  5. I gots a confession to make,,yes,,well,,I wake my grandson up each morning, we watch Spongbob, I like Spongebob, cant miss it, i dunno, wierd, aint it? randyp

I still watch some kids cartoons. My two favorite modern shows are Adventure Time and Regular Show. Both air on the Cartoon Network.

  6. From what I have heard, the new MP10 is a hand full of trouble. The Pelletyears Titans have been is the shop allot and one was rolled. There was another fella on here who bought two gray Titans with the white stripes and Sisu axles. He also has nothing but problems with them. It looks like the sad truth is the MP10's are very buggy. I don't know what Mack is doing with those Volvo engines but something is not working out for them.

  7. Trust me Freight,,,nothing to it,,simple, painless. Toughest part is all pills and water you gotta take night before to clean out. Results can really be lifesaving too,,,,randyp

I know of at least two people who ignored any pains they felt or ignored the idea of getting one all together. Unfortunately for both of them they now have a colostomy bag. One of the people was a young man who had ulcerative colitis and ignored the pain. He is my age (30) and now has a colostomy bag. Image being so young and having to crap in a bag for the rest of your life because every inch of your colon was removed. The other person is a friend of my mothers who had polyps and never went for an exam. Had she went when she was supposed to (her doctor even recommended it) they would have caught the growths and been able to remove them before they covered her colon requiring it to be removed. Awful stories.

  8. Its good to hear you don't want to scrap it either. I mean how many of these trucks still exist? One of three M100's is by me and still parked with its trailer. Once they are gone they are gone forever.

From the brochure it should weigh in at about 74,500 lbs tare weight. its 13'10" wide and 14'2" high. Its only 26' long so any 50 ton lowboy would make short work of the haul.

Would be a nice pair: the M100 and its little brother the M50. I would love to own both of them.

  9. I have a good running m50x I think it is number 15. We used it to build a lake on the farm and we are done with it. Hate to scrap it but that's where it is headed if it can't find a new home soon? We are near liberty new York? Any suggestions! It's gone for ever!

    Thanks Ric

Did you try to sell it on ebay a year or so ago? I remember that auction, think a link a link was posted here. Its a tough sell, very few people in the market for such a truck and if they are chances are it is making them money and they don't want a project truck with hard to find parts. Myself and others here would hate to see such a rare and awesome Mack model sent to china in little bits. Maybe Gerhart would rescue it or someone else in the heavy hauling/equipment business. I would try to hang on to it for as long as practically possible but it sounds as if you already have.

Dump trucks of that size require rigging and a special transport permit to move. Someone out there must have a project that needs an off highway dump. Maybe a small family ran logging/quarry/mining company might want a spare truck or a cheap yet stout 50 ton dumper to move dirt/rock around. I am sure someone would want it its just a matter of finding that person or company.

    Here is an idea:

Post a video of it on YouTube. Sounds crazy but give it an interesting and informative title, something like "monster 50 ton mack dump truck" sounds good. Record some footage of it running around a bit. Start the video off with someone starting the big Detroit (or is it a Cummins?) and driving off. Then switch to an in cab view and drive around for a few minutes letting everyone hear the roaring engine and view out of the cab. Then top it off with another external video of someone running the dump hoist up and down and then your done. MAKE SURE you put the engine model (eg. detroit diesel 16v71 or cummins VTA) and M50 into the tags. This helps the video pop up in you tube and searches. Then in the description say that the truck is for sale and some information about it. People love 2 cycle Detroit "porn". There are tons of detroit diesel videos on youtube and many of them get plenty of hits. The M50 will surely be a great video and someone who is watching might be a potential customer or knows someone who does. Its an odd way to sell but an interesting one. Even if you manage to sell it, keep the video posted for us Mack and Detroit fans.

And out of curiosity, how much are you asking for the truck?

  10. Additional details are emerging on the agreement between the U.S. and Mexico to reopen the border to long-distance trucking.

A Department of Transportation official speaking on background confirmed that under the plan, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will require Mexican trucks to use electronic onboard recorders as part of their satellite tracking systems.

So the flood gates have opened. I wonder how much port traffic will be "diverted" to Mexican ports close to the US border.

  11. Awww....come on now. That 8 hour charge to go 40 miles in an electric car doesn't emit any emissions from the tailpipe. Never mind the carbon footprint left at the power plant from the coal burned in order to generate the electricity required to charge that car for 8 hours....or the carbon footprint created during the extraction and transportation of the coal from the mine to the power plant...or in the manufacture, installation, and maintenance of the transmission lines which get that electricity to the outlet the car is plugged into....

My 10 mpg F250 leaves a smaller carbon footprint than one of these new "green" electric cars.

...and ethanol is another friggin joke. During the manufacturing process for corn ethanol, it takes nearly as much energy to produce a gallon of ethanol as you get from burning a gallon of ethanol. If I remember correctly, it's somewhere around a 1.25:1 ratio.

Yup all bull shit. We have tons of coal here. Build coal to fuel plants right next to or close to the mines so we don't have to haul coal all over the place. Best part is the process only needs carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas as a feed stock so we could get CO from other sources such as biomass. Only problem is it needs hydrogen as a source of fuel which is extracted from methane via steam reforming. In fact steam reforming creates hydrogen and carbon monoxide so we could directly convert methane to liquid fuels. The plants are costly to operate but if things get bad they could become more attractive.

But there are still tons of other chemicals we derive from crude oil as well. Asphalt to pave roads, heavy fuel oil for ships, plastics and lots more. Going to be hard to kick the crude habit but we can cut back on its use for fuels.

And don't get me started on ethanol.

  12. I was listening to the radio the other day and they are predicting gasoline to hit $5 by memorial day. This is all because of the rebellions/revolutions in Egypt and Libya. Both countries are oil producers.

I really wish we would kick the habit of buying oil from those shit holes.

We have plenty of coal and we can produce both gasoline and diesel fuel from coal. The Germans did it during WW2.

  13. Quote: "they would still be building engines, trans.etc of their own design. Without assistance from a foreign country,as they have for 111 years"

Well those 111 years include the years of MACK-RENAULT and the years of MACK-VOLVO don't you think????

If there is any complain with the way MACK DEALERS are working, well give your concerns to the MACK executives in charge of DEALESHIPS or PARTS and SERVICES operations.

As I said before, we are the ones that will ruin the MACK name with our pesimistic ways of thinking. Let the MACK-VOLVO aliance develop. Nothing is perfect but chances are that what is wrong will get fixed.

Were the MACK TRUCKS brand will be today without VOLVO?? Who knows all I know MACK has a STRONG HISTORY and is a CULT. BUILT LIKE A MACK stands for the BEST TRUCK there is. If VOLVO let MACK go on its own, can the MACK BRAND stand and begin again?????

VOLVO HELPED MACK, sure there are some issues, but the positives are more than the negatives. For instance the MP-SERIES ENGINES is a new platform for todays modern diesel powerhouses, when competitors still built on older engine series and technologies. CATERPILLAR is out so MACK has to capitalize on that factor. Is PACCAR at risk of loosing CUMMINS as its ENGINE PARTNER????

How sweet will it be if PACCAR knocks MACK'S door and ask for MP-SERIES engines for their trucks!!!

We have to be positive abut MACK'S FUTURE. MACK is so strong no matter if VOLVO leaves MACK, MACK can survive. MACK is here to STAY. If you are no more a MACK enthuiast because of the "VOLVO ISSUE" then go SOUTH OF THE BORDER and buy INTERNATIONAL or FREIGHTLINER...

    HAPPY 111 ANIVERSARY MACK!!!

PACCAR is not knocking on anyones door. They have their super modern MX engines and the re badged Cummins. There is rumor that they were even working on a big bore MX engine but the plans were shelved when the economy went south. Also Cummins aren't slouches either.

Mack really needed new engine technology and whether we like it or not, Volvo gave it to them. Mack has been foreign owned since 1990 and Renault was been buying Mack shares since 1979.
