The rules are pretty simple, 1st 2nd or any other amendments dont really count as this forum is world wide and the world does exist out side the 50 states of the US of A

So as such the forum has to cater for that and the rules are pretty darn simple, manners, mannners and more manners

It's not hard to follow and we are all pretty easy going so it shouldn't be a problem unless we choose to make a problem, I dont and wont

    Paul

I'm not sure what forum YOU are on but that statement ( and most of the other statements I've read own this thread) sound good but do not reflect my experience here. I was a contributing member for 2 weeks in October and in that time I made 52 posts, every single one truck related and every single one respectful and one of the responses I got was "Sounds like a lot of talk but maybe that is all you are wanting. If pulling a head is to expensive and so on a Mack is not going to be an inexpensive toy. Stick with a small block Chevy maybe in a 70's car so parts are cheap and the vehicle is EZ to work on. I commented earlier in this post to help but did not think that it would be tuning into a snivel feast. So replace a piston & liner or two and get the old dog running instead of taking 2 weeks to talk about what you don't want to do. No one said a Mack was cheap so buck-up or shut-up. We are here for advise but you have to do something with it or it is a big waste of time for everyone." I don't know about the rest of you but when I was taught manners it did NOT include talking to people like that so I deleted all my posts and quit participating. The reason was NOT because of that one post. This kinds of people are everywhere. The reason  I left was because i n just a couple hours, that post received 3 "likes" so it was NOT just one person being a douch nozzle but was something of a member consensus. Then, Admin replies basically defending that post with "we are a straight shooting bunch that can be a bit rough around the edges". This forum has an "ignore" feature and if someone does't like my posts they were free to use the feature but to choose, rather, to make that post was only to serve ONE purpose IMO and that was to tell me that I was NOT welcome here and to go away so i did. For the record, I have no idea what those that this thread is about did to get banned. It must have happened before i came here. I am not a fan of banning people but am on a couple forums where people have been banned and for good reason IMO. I CERTAINLY don't think that the person that made the quoted post should be banned. Anyways, the hypocrisy of this thread was so compelling that I thought I would point it out. If I get banned for this post, so be it. I still have no intention of sharing any of my family trucking pictures (been in the trucking business since 1929) or sharing my journey with my B-61 project. The only reason i stay logged in is because I have been sharing my project through PM's with one member that is respectful and interested ( and another member that was looking for parts). Cheers and a Merry Christmas to all.

Perhaps that is because I want all available information and possibilities before I go tearing into things and spending money unnecessarily.

If you read my post that you quoted you will find that I said the cost of the gasket is peanuts if pulling the head is necessary. I don't like doing exploratory surgery looking for cancer before elimination possibilities like the common cold. While it is true that this is my first medium/heavy duty project, I have done several car/pickup projects including body swaps, driveline swaps, some gas to diesel and mix-matching brands as well as manufacturing body panels. Also, having owned several heavy trucks over the years (only have 2 Petes now) I have done my fair share of repair/maintenance on those as well and by comparison, this B61 is a lightweight. NO toys are inexpensive but throwing money at a problem before determining what that problem actually IS just makes it worse IMO.
I commented earlier in this post to help but did not think that it would be tuning into a snivel feast.
I appreciated your previous post very much. In fact, I added either a "like" or a "thanks" to it (I don't recall which). It was very well thought out and helpful. However, I was not aware that I was required to take it as gospel and that I was to accept it as the "final word" on the subject. My bad.
So replace a piston & liner or two and get the old dog running instead of taking 2 weeks to talk about what you don't want to do.
I may do that yet. However, I am exploring several options for this truck and am not ONLY looking at a stock restoration. I am still considering an engine swap, a driveline swap, putting the cab on a whole new chassis, choosing a newer medium duty chassis or a light duty chassis (I have an '03 Dodge dually cummins 6 spd that may become a donor) or just park it as yard art. I also have a 1950's vintage Holmes wrecker that I am considering putting on it or i may leave it as a wheel tractor. A LOT of things have to be considered in choosing which may i want to go and, since there is a lot to consider before choosing a direction, that requires asking for the opinion of others.
No one said a Mack was cheap so buck-up or shut-up. We are here for advise but you have to do something with it or it is a big waste of time for everyone.
I was never expecting this to be cheap but that does not mean that I am willing to spend money where it is not needed. I didn't realize that you were the spokesman for the entire forum and that you speak for "everyone" but I do see that you are not alone in your view that my participation here as a waste of "everyones" time so I will choose to "shut up". I will find the information I seek elsewhere. Enjoy your projects, I know i will enjoy mine.

  3. I know very little about it. I bought it from a guy that bought it from a truck museum that was selling off all of it's inventory. I believe it is relatively local (Northern Alberta) but can not confirm that. I have since added a couple wooden ladders ( a roof ladder and an extension ladder) and a vintage pike pole. Would still like to get the proper hose for the reel to replace the rag hose and correct axe (the one I put on it is a fire axe but has a polansky type blade rather than the pick). Something that i find interesting i that it has, what appears to be, an original electric fuel pump (mounted on the firewall). I didn't know that EP's were a "thing" that far back but it makes sense on a truck that sits for a long time but needs to start ASAP when needed.

  4. As it turn out, the pto on my B61 (triplex) is the same size and bolt pattern as the one on my '35 Ford. Anyone know what the tooth count is on a PTO for the Mack?. Just wondering if, by chance they if are interchangeable.

that truck is a 56 57 or 58. cast brake pedal and the dash is normal. plus it has the old style huge hand brake and fuel guage reads 1/4 1/2 3/4, they got rid of that guage around 59

My truck was sold to me as a 62 but the seller was not sure. The serial number falls right in the middle of the ones posted in the registry as 59 so I'm assuming mine is a 59. Mine has the same hand brake and fuel gauge as in the quote but a stamped steel  brake pedal

  6. Would be a piece of cake on a Dodge with a 12V cummins. Been pondering that with my B61. A 3rd gen Dodge would be better but the electronics would make it more of a "job" to do. I've never done this specific swap but, with a 12V cummins Dodge, you could have it going in a weekend and have it completed in a week pretty easy I would think.

Was told the push rod was changed. Still ticking. They are pulling the head to see if it's a valve.

Probably not a bad idea. I had a 3406 CAT in an '87 LTL 9000 that had a tick. Found a bent push rod, replaced the rod, set the lash and the tick persisted. I was taking the truck to a mechanic friends place (12 miles away) to have him check it out and on the way it dropped the exhaust valve in the same cylinder that the push rod was bent and put the rod through the block. The tick went away 😜

If pumping primer 50 times and it doesn't build pressure what does that say.?

It says that it isn't working properly😋. When I had a no start on my '98 WS (550 CAT) it was a check valve in the filter housing. When I had a no start on my '05 Pete (475 CAT) it was a loose fitting on a fuel line on the suction side allowing air into the system. IIRC, it both cases the hand primer would not build pressure.

  9. I'm not at all familiar with that engine but sounds like that rocker isn't getting oil. If it is oiled through the push rod the rod could be plugged. Whatever pool gallery feeds it must be blocked. I'm assuming that the valve lash is set correctly.

  10. Could be a leak in the fuel line on the suction side. Wont leak fuel but will suck air and prevent startup. The first thing I would do is put a fuel line from the filter housing to a jerry can of fuel and try it. If still no start then put a clear fuel line between the filter housing and injection pump and watch for air when you try to start it. Diesels are pretty simple, if it's getting fuel it's gotta go. Pooched hand pump shaped not affect it's ability to run and will only prevent you from priming the system and if the system lost it's prime, you have other issues. You could put an electric fuel pump in your temp line from the jerry can to eliminate the need for the hand pump.

I can tell you 100% for sure........the International HX is a way better built truck than the 2013 and 2020 Star 4900's I was running.

I buddy of mine used to buy a new Star every year or two and said that the quality went down after they left Kelowna. I know a couple guys that worked at WS in Kelowna and those guys were VERY proud of the tucks they built. It only stands to reason that once they were bought by freightliner it wouldn't take long for them to start building them like freightliners.

Before I started using Opti Lube, I did actually use 2-stroke oil in the old R600.  It did show a noticeable improvement in lubricity in the study I have referenced before.  But, the Opti does more than just that.  A lot of the available additives didn't do much for lubricity, and some stuff actually made it worse.

I guess it depends on what you are asking from an additive: anti-gel, lubricity, cetane booster, water separator, etc.  I mean, if somebody gets what they want by putting a dead possum in the tank, go for it!  I don't judge!

For me, I am only interested in lubricity. Never heard of "opti-lube" before. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

  13. I know this is an old thread but I am new here so.......I have been using 2 stroke in diesels for years. In fact, when I change fuel filter, I fill the new one with 2 stroke oil from a new, unopened bottle to ensure no contamination. The engine will smoke and run a bit rough for a couple minutes but no harm done. I don't like ATF because it's high in detergents and i fear scrubbing out the injectors in newer engines. No harm in older engines though IMO. Are is a video that y'all may find interesting.
