To my knowledge, the U700's indeed were built to accommodate vendor engines. I do believe that St. J did have some, yes, but Lord knows how many. The hoods were bigger (taller) to do this. See attached photos. The extra hood is visible in both the fenders and the narrow part of the hood top. I've been told that the Cummins 903 could not fit in a U700 because it was too wide. A Cat 3208 was the biggest V8 (other than a Mack V8) that could fit in there.

There were 2 different model designations for 903 powered U models,U659 and U661,one for turbocharged and one natural, they made 501 of the U659 and only 65 of the U661

  2. First 4 or 5 years of production, the shells were bolted to the headlight panels, and in my experience of taking apart ones that have been sitting years, they are a PITA. The later shells just had the bolts along top holding it to the radiator support,1 each side behind the hood latch, and 2 big screws at bottom holding it to the shutters. My suggestion if the fenders aren't your concern, take a Sawzall or torch. I hate to see parts get wasted if fenders are savable, but too far away for me to worry and at least your trying to save something

    Well,

I finally got around to doing some work and inspection on the B, all I have to say is WOW, clean and rust free is about as well as I can describe it, other than the surface rust on the fender tops and  grill guard, that's it.

As for the specs, It is a ENDT 675 with Jakes, it has a TRQ 720 quadraplex it has a 16K front axle and 65K rears with 9.34(!) gears.

I think it is an early Warren dump bed with a Warren underbody  twin cylinder hoist with no hyd tank and all air shift controls.

I have all of the chrome badges and trim work for the hood, except I have 3 half bulldogs for the left side of the hood and none for the right.

It is also missing the Mack nameplate for the upper radiator tank, but other than that the truck is in excellent shape with 1008 hours and 22,800 miles showing, (I'm assuming sine the restoration).

I've got right side Bulldogs used or new,Mack nameplate also.

I'll get some pics up. No, it's not mint and ready to go cross country. But it's not bad either. It def needs some work but it runs and moves. They let some stuff go for a while. The clutch doesn't feel terrific and it's a city truck. You aren't getting on the interstate in something like this. Needs a battery box and a couple E31's. I'll make cables for it. The cab, glass and pump is worth the money.  This would actually be a good export truck. Afghanistan or Sur America.

No such thing as a good export truck. They have enough of our old Macks.
