Neither can I. Never thought I'd go this far into it. I always liked this cab on the B. I think what saved it and allowed me to go this route was the shoddy repair that was done after the original owner crashed into his trailer after missing the fifth wheel. It was literally pop riveted back together and the two replacement panel were falling off. They did a lot of damage too, as they chiseled the spot welds apart instead of using a cutter. Like i said, I can't wait to get this part done.

I like this cab on the Bs too. Must've been a quick job so save money the first time, but how in the world was somebody trying to hook up a trailer so fast they not only missed the 5th wheel and didn't realize it but then cause so much damage that you need to replace rear panels?! I could see a sizable dent maybe and the glass to be blown out but something on the cab that couldn't just be beat out or dealt with? Makes me scratch my head...

Glad someone is fixing it up right! Can't wait to see the old dog growling around again...

  2. Well now dad won't shut his mouth about how much he'd love a Cummins powered LT everytime we go to see the gas motor in the firetruck. Unfortunately the guy who gave us the 707 block has one and got my dad hooked on it. Looks like he'd still love a Superdog too as he sees it everytime we walk into the shop and I keep catching him eying it up...

  3. Looks like the new lights someone installed on the rear of my L before we got it. I think they look awful on the thing but they're nice... you can see them up at the top of the truck on the right side of the hose bed. You'll have to take my word that this is what they look like because the quality isn't good enough... I have a better photo somewhere I'll try and dig up... in this one though you can see the tail light a little better than the others, and all the lights look the same except for color and size...

Just figured I'd mention it... maybe the light you have was sold as a more modern replacement for the old blinkers on Bs, Ls, and similar firetrucks? I have to agree I don't think it's for an R...

Good thing I don't need it though, seeing as I wouldn't exactly qualify as a veteran...

I would say very tough to come by. Once in a while you'll see some pieces come up, a radiator shell, hood. I haven't seen fenders in a while. Cabs are tough, there was one (it was complete) on Ebay last year in Canada. Cabs can be rebuilt and parts fabricated, but it's slow and costly. I'm rebuilding a L cab for my B-73, it's hard and takes a lot of patience. But, keep hunting, you'll stumble on stuff.

The work you’re doing on that cab is incredible! But yeah it really makes me glad the cab on my L model is in really good shape other than the holes through the floor for the pedals seem to keep getting bigger... but especially glad since I’ve only seen one other truck with 5 seater L cab mine has...

Other than that I know a few times someone will take an old L model that’s been sitting for a while and sell all the parts off of it. Be sure to keep your eye out on auction sites for them!

Superdog still has that W71 tractor for sale I think? He was asking good money but it so far appears to be the only tractor to survive. Just search Very Rare W-71T it was posted in 2012. Nevermind I see you revived that thread in December. Send him an offer... 😉

As much as I want to, I don’t have the money, time, money, energy, money, means, money, knowledge, or money to get that truck and put it back on the road... besides I know if I did have all those things I’d want to do something to it that’d make someone unhappy...

If you look at the cabs, the W71 has a very different cab than the LT. The H is basically the same cab but with a taller windshield.

The W actually used the same frame rails as the LT, with a dip at the front so the engines would sit lower... other than that I’m just repeating what Mack themselves have said...

The H is the cabover L but the W is specifically the cabover LT...

Im glad its all coming together for you. Its a big commitment taking this project on

Should be all smooth sailing shortly with any luck

    Paul

Thank you kindly! Luckily I’m not alone... just have to adjust the timing, get the governor tuned correctly, and the radiator back in (it’s at the shop right now getting rebuilt) and pray it starts running right! Should be within a week or two...

And they made a ton more of them than the w-71

Unfortunately... I didn’t think the W-71 was exactly unpopular, does anyone know why they stopped making it so soon? I have a hunch it’s because it was just a cabover version of the LT so they wanted to retire the two together despite such the limited run of the Ws...

Hello fellas I just saw this thread we just purchased 1950 L85 Aerial Ladder looking for service manuals and such and keep seeing the Museum mentioned. Is this a resource to find manuals ? Can some one please elaborate please?

The Mack Museum (out of Mack’s customer center) can give you a bunch of information on your truck if you give them the VIN. They even have maintenance manuals, and probably even have pictures of your truck when it rolled out of the factory.

You can get all their contact information to send in a request for the stuff on their website here: https://www.macktruckshistoricalmuseum.org

Also feel free to post pictures of the rig on this site... we certainly love pictures...

Also by any chance is it the Blue and White one? I saw that one up for sale a little while back and have been wondering what came of it...

  10. On the topic, this just triggered my memory. I remember a little while back on my travels, a bit of time before I got on the forum, a guy I met on my travels told me of a rumored W Mack. At the time I thought he was talking about some Superliner because a W Mack search on google turned up a lot of people but no trucks.
Anyways he told me somewhere around Michigan (I believe) there’s a W locked away in an old building at some old heavy machine works because the company found out the value of the truck before they sold it, so they locked it away with the intentions of restoring it to use as a sort of company mascot, only for nothing to be done with it. If that story was true it’s probably still there for someone to find. Figured I’d mention it while it’s on my mind, I’d hate for it to be forgotten about if there’s any merit to the story, and I don’t exactly intend on going all the way out to Michigan looking for a truck that may or may not exist, but maybe one of y’all can.

    Excellent lowboy tractor

It really would be, too bad I can count on my fingers (and maybe toes) the number of these that are still known to exist. Only 215 were ever built, and seeing as it’s a cabover, you can imagine how many actually made it. Only 2 guys on here own one, and when one of them, Superdog, put his up for sale he was asking $40,000 for it, and it’s not in the best shape...

But hey, Dr. Bill found his in a gravel pit on a road trip... maybe there’s one sitting in a shed somewhere or hidden in the woods, and someone will get a really awesome and rare project...

Well, I used to be more of a VW fan until recently. I bought brand new Jetta and a Tiguan Highline, paid them off first year. Dealer broke grill on Tiguan while doing an oil change. Then put the hoist right through the floor on my Jetta and tried to blame my wife. Told her she ran something over.

They wouldn't come good for anything so I called VW Canada and they just blew me off. I even had all kinds of pics documenting all the damage my dealer has done and all they could say was "sorry for your luck."

So I hope they don't bring that attitude to International, because on the car side they don't care about customers that buy two at a time and pay them off.

To be fair, we used to have a Passat and never had any issues. It sounds like you've just got a really crappy dealer, and for all VW knows it is your fault because that's what the dealer told them, and now you're just trying to scam them out of money to pay for your mistake.

I know you're not but I'm just trying to give a different point of view.

Still I'd much rather have an old VW, especially one of their mini-bus based pickups...

  13. I hope all works out for you. Sounds like you're doing your due diligence on this deal. I've heard too many stories of someone getting scammed on deals like this. I'd be sure to really inspect that car before you buy it too, just to make sure it is what you've been told it is... This is either the one or it'll be the one you should avoid.

  14. Unless you plan on doing heavy haul with it the amount of gears shouldn't make that much of a difference. Can’t wait to see more on this truck, and I wouldn’t mind if you added to that ever expanding lists of videos of old trucks getting going for the first time in a long time...
