  1. Valid points, indeed, Superdog. I miss my old V8 MH, but would not consider another V8 for the reasons you state. I see the same trouble coming down the line for any pre-EGR truck. E6 engines are still plentiful and reasonable to work on. I also have the benefit of a competent parts dept. at my local Mack dealer that can still get older parts as long as they are available. Although it is rather scary that they are changing over to VOLVO part numbers...

  2. I wonder why you never see a Peterbilt in a school bus chassis?

Kids got to get to school you know.

    Rob

As soon as Tom sees your post I bet we will see a Peterbilt school bus.

    Gregg

  3. These are my thoughts as well, Rob. I do most of my own maintenance and repairs, and my CX is now over a million miles, so that part doesn't concern me. An older truck with no computer is simpler to maintain, IMHO and it dont get much simpler than an ol' reliable E6. Polly worries for me that I will be giving up creature comforts for the sake of style. But I am willing to accept the loss of cruise control and power windows. I have always been comfotable diving an R and this one seems to be a viable truck to do my job.

  4. I would like to gather thoughts and opinions on a truck trade I am considering. I have an opportunity to obtain a very clean 1985 Superliner with an E6 350. This truck is almost completely rebuilt, so age & reliability are not a major concern. I would like to work this truck in place of my 2000 CX Vision, which would be traded or sold.

Sweet Polly has already registered her opinion, that being I am certifiably nuts if I give up my current ride for a truck that is 15 years older. It is somewhat of an emotional decision for me; my CX is a perfectly good truck that has served me well, but I have always wanted a Superliner. Input from all would be greatly appreciated!

  5. I was so smart I rode this bus to school. later on I even drove it, as I was old enough to get my license by 6th. grade. I was very proud of that, being the only sixth grader with a mustache and a drivers license.

I don't know which is worse... A short bus or a Freightshaker.

  6. Tis!! I have an open mind and am always willing to learn of those things which are unfamiliar.

Always been at the receiving end of a dump trailers cargo, so no experience at all with them.

    Staying busy I hope?

    Rob

Been steady working, Rob, thanks for asking. Too busy to post on a regular basis, I apologize for that. It takes me extra time to grease my frameless due to all the grease fittings!

  7. As a matter of fact Underdog that can be said about any job and any profession! In all honestly it just goes to show how much mature they are with that type of thinking.

Amen to that. Most guys that talk that way are looking for an excuse anyway. Unwilling to accept responsibility for themselves. As you said it is directly related to maturity level.

  8. Actually, there's not much to debate. Now that Harley has shut Buell down, if you want anything but a cruiser style motorcycle you're going to have to buy an import.

Check again. Harley has quite a varied offering. Many variations of Sportster, big V-twins and the V-rod. I just could never justify the price. Supply vs. demand as Harleys are what everybody wants. My own ride is a Kawi Vulcan 800B Classic.

  9. The "BIG SIX" is quite impressive but you will have to go to the museum to see it. The only info I found is that it is an 885 cu. in. inline 6 built to meet some proposed Federal Regulation.(emissions, perhaps?) When the regulation was dropped so was production of this engine. Too bad, I say. IMHO, the reason Mack lost a lot of highway market share in the '70s and '80s is that they did not upgrade to big power to compete with CAT and Cummins six cylinders.

  10. You guys are speaking my language now! I don't like to brag, (well, yeah, I do) but I've been dumping my 39' frameless spread for 10 years now and have never put it on the side. (watch what happens tomorrow...) Let me talk to those guys who say I ain't a bucket hauler if I haven't laid one over. Other Dog has the right mindset. You always need to be just a bit nervous when that trailer is in the air. When you get cocky and lose the butterflies in your gut that is when she goes over. Always be mindful of your equipment and your conditions.

  11. I just got transfered to a 07 Mack Vision about a month ago and now there is a light coming on in the insturment pannel. Called the dealership and they are unsure what it is.... Anyone have any ideas? The truck is running fine, no issues. Just have no clue what the light means.

If your dealer didn't know what that light was all about, then you need to go to another dealer. I wouldn't trust them to work on the truck. Either they are clueless or they blew you off. Both would disqualify them from earning your business.

  12. From your posts "You sounded a little taller"

Nothing to be ashamed of at all. Plenty of respect for ANY man to work hard, take care of family. Not looking for someone to blame, something given to them.

Yes blacks have been sterotyped for decades but I can show you 50 right now that work hard every day, no matter the weather. Working on a garbage truck, over 1000 houses a day, Florida summer heat and they are there every morning. They clear near $100/wk, BUT they earn it.

As you stated, Everyone is affected by the present economy. Many blacks voted for Obama with the expectation that he would hand them their piece of the pie. You have yours and are more appreciative of that because you worked for it. You take care of it, keep it clean, running right, because replacement comes out of your back.

You guys can talk all you want about the politics of color, just sign me up for that job making $100 a week!

  13. 2006-2009 trucks of any make are heavier than their older counterparts due to the added emission equipment.

I run a 2000 CX with a 2008 spread axle MAC bucket(a finer bucket trailer I have yet to witness). The trailer is built HEAVY to accomodate the commodities I haul. Tare weight full tanks 34,000. Tractor alone is 20,500 with the wetline and my assorted bric-a-brac. The day you leave it home is the day you will need it.

  14. Rob, et al:

You wanna get this website shut down? This website is sponsored by a Mack dealer and we've been graced with several participants who are employees of Mack, dealers, and suppliers. Mack and Volvo have a lot of minority customers. Mack and Volvo will not tolerate racism- read their corporate policies if you don't believe me. Posting racist carcitures, etc. will get Mack's ire and may have negative consequences for our sponsors. So if you want Mack and their dealerships to survive, don't post offensive stuff that will drive away ANY potential Mack customer that should happen upon your post.

Prior to your accusation, I read no reference to race in this thread- only a political point of view.

  15. A question from the other side of the world

Hypothetically. If a drunk driver, who has no health insurance, is involved in a serious accident and is taken to the emergency section of the hospital, then what happens to this driver? Are they treated and then sent a bill later?

    Thanks. Rod (from DownUnder)

That's exactly what would happen, Rod. That is the myth that is perpetuated by the liberal supporters of health care reform, that someone would be denied critical care. It simply does not happen in the U.S.A. Services are provided to those who need it. If the recipient is unable to pay, that becomes a matter for the lawyers.

  16. I don't have any experience with the road king shocks. The cost has kept me from trying them myself. But they are rebuildable, which means they last a lifetime. As I recall, they are not "DIY"; they must be sent to the manufacturer for rebuild. The downside to that, though, is the truck is down in order to send the shocks back for rebuild, unless you were to purchase 2 sets. This all seems to me more trouble than they might be worth.

  17. QCdriver,

When I replaced the springs on my CX, I upgraded from Mack's standard 2 leaf to the middle option 3 leaf setup. There is also a heavier 3 leaf for 18,000lb axles, but that may be too stiff for a road tractor. I don't know what your truck has on it now, but a heavier spring will improve the lifespan of your shocks and tires. I also prefer the ride of the heavier spring because the front end is more under control and not bouncing all over the road. I am usually right at 12,000lb on my steer axle.

It is just a fact of life that shocks don't last very long. I am in the habit of replacing shocks whenever I put on new tires.
