Vote for the flappers, they only ting ting if your foot isn't on the go pedal.

Blocks under a front leaf are a hugely dangerous idea. If it is unsafe in a small 4x4 trucks suspension there is no way it is a good idea on a semi.
I would say to raise it the best/safest way is taller/thicker springs . That way it gets your frame and everything else up higher as well for more ground clearance.

I've managed to keep to a simple rule, If I can't get every vehicle, trailer, and equipment I own in the barn/ garage out of the weather something has to go.
Lately I cheated a little and bought a house with a larger garage and larger barn just to keep things in.
