  1. None of them are mine but i know the owner pretty good his name is Dick Beckett, he comes from Exeter about 40-50 km's away would you believe that his son's only spent about $60,000 on the flinty :blink: That W model of Padgett's is just downright awesome aye I watched that being restored about $200,000+ went into it the only thing they couldn't get for it was the steering wheel as old Charlie the original driver had hand's like sandpaper so yopu can only guess what it was like in the end.

I rekon the flinty will be going to the truck run but if it isn't i can hook ya up with him if ya head down this way B)

Thanks mate, that would be good. That is the old girl in the calender. Have you got a copy of the calender? August is a good month ;) 200 grand? Fair Dinkum? Thats unbelievable. I like the sound of 60 a lot better. That wouldve had to be a fair bit of paid labour. Im a mechanic so and I should be able to save a bit on the driveline side of it. The paint and body work will be the dear part. Just bought another F model today so it might have to wait a bit longer! I was talkin o the bloke who bought that V8 Flinny and he said he bought it out of Hobart. And it is green in colour. Cheers mate :mack1:

  2. hahaha skip that was my mistake i should have put red not green the next truck show of sort's is on the 16 th march here in Launceston It's called the St.Georges Special kid's run I've got a heap of mates from the big island coming down for it the only other main truck show is the one i took the 3 dog's at which was a couple of week end's ago

That sounds like it could be a good one mate. So the 3 yellow bangers in the photo are yours? Is that the Flinny in the Mack calender? It looks like a ripper. If mine turn out half as good as that I'll be laughin. Id love to have a look at it to get a bit of an idea for mine. I saw Padgetts W model when it was up here at the local Kenworth dealer and I know this could be considered swearing on this forum but I thought it was the benchmark for a restoration. So itd be good to see a great restoration of a real truck. Cheers mate. :mack1:

  3. The other blokes one would most likely be originally owned by Reynold's. I never knew there was a green one at Fingal  does gerald Olding own a yellow/White Trident tipper and dog ??? any time ya heading this way e mail me on werkhorse@hotmail.com and I'll see if we can catch up aye B):thumb:

The one from Fingal was all red I think, thats the one Ive got. I think the one that has recently been sold is green. That is the one youve seen, would that be right? We have an old picture of Bonnys and it looked like it couldve been yellow, they also had a Flinny with a 6cyl in it Im thinkin. Gerald does own a Triden with a dog so I think you're on the right track. Hes actually got a single drive B615, one of 3 out here. Thanks for the invite mate will certainly drop you a line when we're headin down your way. Do you get to many truck shows? There is a good one at Warragul in a couple of weeks (Trucks in action). We should have a couple of F models down there if things go to plan. Thanks again mate, Skip. :mack1:

  4. G'Day skip sorry i haven't replied but i was down south in Hobart for 4 day's teaching our new bloke how to operate a sideloader

That V8 Flinty.......ya didn't happen to get it from a company called Tas Timber Engineering in cambridge did ya?? ?? if so.... I drooled over that many times when delivering timber there

Oh and those 3 sweet dog's were taken at this years Deloraine Truck show about the only truck show left here in Tassie

How are you mate? No I didnt get mine from that company, but I reckon I know the bloke who did, that was only recently. Is it a green one? Mine was in Tassie its whole working life but I actually bought it from a bloke in Wollongong. It belonged to Mt Foster Timber Co. in Fingal. Do you remember it? Do you have trucks yourself? You should've got hold of that V8, they are as rare as hens teeth. Only 25 came out. My records show I think there were 3 V8s in Tassie. Mine, Bonnys, and another that Im unsure of. Id love to get down to Tassie and have a look about. We have a mate down there who we met at Alice Springs, a good Mack man Gerald Olding, and Id like to catch up with him. Cheers mate. Skip :mack1:

  5. :mack1: hello skip you have the transport hall of fame show in alice springs i have heard that that is a good show and i now on 28 august 2010 there must be an anneversery show whit 1000 trucks we are going to try to go to that show and look for a lot of old dogs greetings rene

Gday Mackboy, you are right, that is THE best show in Australia, its on every year but its huge every 5 years. We had our F model there in 2005 and it was a great show. There were about 35 B models there. The rest of the shows out here are fairly small and have all diferent makes and models. Its great that youve heard about Alice though. Cheers mate, Skip. :mack1:

  6. I think you are referring to the RD. The DM had the offset cab and the RD was the heavier version of the R. RD's had a steel "butterfly" hood option but with the steel hood I don't think you could get an air ride cab. I guess the Steel hood was better suited for the tough conditions in Australia.

Thanks Thad, you are spot on again mate, I was thinking of an RD. The fiberglass R bonnet was standard out here from new in 1966, but never really took off until the early 70's. I have a copy of the build sheets for my R615RS and the steel butterfly hood is listed as an option as opposed to the fibreglass. The fibreglass bonnets really started to move when the R700's were brought out. The air ride cab was released out here in 1976 but I have seen a 1976 plated R model with the steel butterfly hood(flinstone), so they were available up until then. It had a solid rubber mounted cab as you cant put bonnet rollers on a butterfly bonnet for an oscillating cab. Talking to older drivers the Flinstone was a popular choice for its durability, but the plastic bonnet R models did end up being a lot more comfortable and easier to service. Cheers mate, Skip :mack1:

  7. I just rec'd the poster advertising the, All - Mack Meet at Gerhart Equipment, October 3 & 4, 2008. Roger Gerhart hosts the show every year at his facility in Lititz, PA. It is a do-not-miss if you are a true :mack1: fan. Last year our friends from the Netherlands came back over just to come to this show.

The other show that is heavily populated with :mack1: Trucks is the Antique Truck Club of America National Meet. This year it is June 13 & 14 at Macungie Park in Macungie, PA. This is what most say is the best antique truck show in the world. The 2007 show had nearly 600 trucks, 300 flea-market spaces and a Friday night family reunion / picnic that was fan-truckin'-tastic. Due to the fact that this National Meet is held in :mack1: Trucks backyard, the bulk of the trucks are :mack1: . Without every attending the ATCA Meet there is no way you can truly call yourself an antique truck enthusiast!

There are photos from the ATCA National Meets here on this site as well as the ATCA site. Check them out, this one is a BLAST!!

When you make you plans, be sure to send me a message so I can help steer you to areas of interest.

    Doug

Thanks very much Doug. They both sound like unmissable shows. I will find out what I can from this end and let you know. It is a pity that there is not an all Mack show out here in Australia. One thing I really want to see is a twin turbo 864. Do you know of any over there? Anyway mate that isnt important at this stage, I will find out what I can. Thanks again mate, Skip.

  8. Gday all. I was wondering if someone can help me out. A friend of ours mentioned to us about a possible all-Mack show over in the USA next year. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly at the end of last year and we havent heard too much about it since as he had the information. So I was wondering if there is such a show and if anyone has any info on it. Thanks everyone. Skip :mack1:

  9. Gday all. Ive put a new photo on my 'Aussie Mack' gallery. My brother took it when i was in his Superliner. What an awesome machine. If you see it, and the smoke, Thats what happens when you sink the boot into a 1000 cubic inch engine. I was in 3rd High(12spd) and at about 1400rpm or when boost kicked in I broke traction for about 60 yards. and the sound...... If there is a better sound in the world I want to hear it. When my digi camera gets fixed there will be a video to go along with it. Hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did. Cheers, Skip.

  10. Well, duh.........I got the cobwebs outta my head and dug up my manual I got years back and found a layout of Duplex. That's close enough to give me an idea of what's in there. Terry, I see the layout of the twin bearings. Thanks for the heads up, and the offer gvam.

One question: How the HECK did they get that cotter pin in the nut? It's barely enough room for socket in that companion flange area let alone enough to pin in there? I know I can get it ripped out, but getting new one back in?? That will be a real trick.

Got my hands on 3/4" impact, picked up 1/2" line to power it from my compressor so after some quick plumbing I'll fire it up and see if I can get it apart. Love to get the little leaks all fixed up. I think I'll work on the valve covers again next. Did them 5 yrs ago and they've got to leak'n again pretty good. What kinda glue do you guys use to seal this up? Apparently the Ultra silicone I used didnt hold up. Should I use a hardening style gasket maker?

    Thanks guys.

About the valve covers, Im guessing you have a 673 engine? I couldnt get them to seal with silastic so I use contact cement to glue them to the lids, then put them on the head dry. If you use this way, you have to put the glue on the lid and the gasket and leave it for 15 minutes or so, until the glue has almost cured. You dont want it wet when you put the 2 surfaces together. You only get one chance to stick them together so you have to have them lined up properly. Also when you put the lids on, you can use an extra fibre washer on the hold down bolt to get a bit more crush. I usually put silastic around the bolt head when Ive finished tightening them up. Hope it goes well for you mate. Cheers, Skip. :mack1:

  11. We haven't had a good turn out on interested people...I would have to place a 1500 piece order but I only got 10 people on the list... :idunno: I'm still trying to drum up some pre-orders.

They look great mate. Are they 24" wide? What would they be worth? As long as you can ship them out to Australia I reckon Id take 4 sets, maybe more depending on price. Can you get back to me? Id fit out 2 trucks with them if I could. Cheers. Skip :mack1:

  12. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...45079%26fvi%3D1

This R715 just hit ebay and has the twin turbo 864 V8 which even has large image sizes so you can see the 864TT up close. I know I will be saving all those photos! And its close to me but I doubt I could come up with that kind of money. Too bad because I could drive it home.

Curious thing is the Turbos are piped in parallel for the intake instead of staged. Each of the two exhaust manifolds drives a turbo that both compres air into the intake manifold. Each turbo can have its own stack which should make for some seriously sweet music. Never seen an 864TT before. It has 9 days to go and already is at a 5500 bid. This is going to be interesting to watch.

That looks like a beauty mate. It looks like its in great nick. i just wondered about the model, shouldnt it be an R719? He says in one description that its an R715 and then in another that its an R713. If it was a 719 chassis it would be a hell of a collectors item. Thanks for pointing it out mate, I'll be saving the photos too. Cheers, skip. :mack1:

  13. I have seen lines groww together inside from too much fuel additive use and it is the same as not having large enough lines.

I was thinking about that myself actually mate, I had a friend who replaced a fuel line out of his secondary filter on an R model and he didnt have the proper sized elbow fittings to screw back in so he used the next size down with an apaptor and he had the same trouble. When he put the right fittings back in it went like a dream. Its all good! Cheers :mack1:

  14. Hello I am new to this forum and hope that someone can help me. I have a 1995 cl 713 with a E-7 350. The problem that I am having is when I am going down the road every once in a while it will act as if it is flooding out. I will be going along just fine and all of a sudden it will fludder and lose all kinds of power like my fuel filters are clogged. If I let off the throttle for a second and get back into it it will run fine until the next time, which could be 1\4 mile or it could be tommorrow. Sometimes this won't happen for a few days, then it might happen for 2 days in a row. Yesterday it happened all day long every load. I have replaced the fuel filters twice, replaced the fuel supply pump on the injector pump, replaced all the fuel lines with new ones.(none of the return lines). checked to make sure the fuel cap was vented and working. I just can't figure it out and it is really wearing on me. Any one that has any idea PLEASE HELP! Thanks

Sounds like youve checked everything externally, Ive had a cracked pickup tube cause problems before, whenever the fuel was sloshing around or was low and exposed the crack it wouldget a gutfull of air and miss and carry on. Also Ive had the end of a siphon hose intermittently cover the end of the pickup and starve the engine for fuel, that someone had so kindly left in there one night. Let us know how you go mate. :mack1:

  15. I had a 237 and a 285 with a popping noise, you could hear it through the air cleaner when you let off the accellator petal and when you shut it down, mine was a loose valve seat on the intake. Ron

That is sounding like the noise Ive got. The truck runs and performs well it just pops. I dont think its the dynatard, Ive powered the solenoids at idle and it seems to be a different noise. How did your trucks run when they were making the noise?

  16. I had a 237 make a tick when it was leaking a small amount of compression out of the head gasket. I didnt know it was a compression leak untill the gasket went and the noise was gone after i put new head gaskets and fire rings on it

    sum old farmer tricks!

IF you suspect the above , it usually happens between the heads !To find or confirm it get a gallon of water or a garden hose and dump or spray it between the heads the noise will disapear momentarly if it does youv'e found your problem! :)

If the cam is suspected check the drain plug for shiny slabs of metal Note this problem will (USUALLY) be acompanied by a poping noise in the air cleaner!

Gday fjh how are you mate? Ive got a popping sound coming from my 285. It does it when you start it both when its hot and cold. It doesnt seem to be ticking and the pop seems to go out of it when you rev it up. Any ideas? Would it be worth measuring the lift of each push rod?

  17. Mackboy,

I would like to know why the 500 isn't available here as well.

The new lineup leaves out the Quantum cabover, CH (known as the fleetliner and valueliner) and Vision. It now shows the Granite which was not offered by Mack AU as a conventional truck instead putting it in with the Titan and Big Foot in their mining section. Are they just showing off their new updated models or are they eliminating the others? If the granite is going to replace the CH and vision what about sleeper models?

It would be sad of they eliminated the other models. If the CH, Vision and Quantum are indeed gone, I smell Volvo up to no good. They are doing whatever they can to shrink the Mack lineup to popular models, gradually phasing out less popular models to be replaced by their own. They tried it with the highway models here in the US by trying to eliminate the largest Mack sleeper to chase OOs to Volvo for highway work.

Thad, sorry to interrupt mate but I couldnt agree with you more on the new models. Our current models; the CH, vision, trident, superliner, qantum and titan are all being pushed aside. The qantum was the first to go, as Volvo will take up the cabover market. We hav 2 of them and they are a nice truck. But Mack are backward to have ever dropped the Ultraliner. They were the answer to kenworths cabover. They are a mile better truck. The vision is the only new model to keep the same shape and theyre calling it a granite. The new trident looks like your granite but has the MP8 under it. Its probably the pick of them as far as looks go. The new Titan looks terrible, it is supposed to be the toughest and hardest looking truck on the market and theyve turned it into a cross between a kenworth and an iveco, its very disappointing. There was nothing wrong with the current models, in fact they were selling well and looking like a mack should look and theyve just fucked it up really! I reckon if they offered the 500hp engine in the trident it would be perfect, because they were only available with a 470CCRS engine. This shouldve been done 5 years ago. Its very hard to follow their thinking. The same thing happened when they dropped the classic superliner II in 1990 and brought out the CLR. There is nothing wrong with a CLR but when you hop out of a big old square superliner it just doesnt have the same appeal getting into a curvy looking truck. After a few years they brought out the titan which was squarer and tougher looking and they were a lot more successful, although a lot of the market had been lost to kenworth. Maybe kenworth marketers should be employed by Mack! Thier range of trucks hasnt changed much in 30 years but they are market leaders out here. Sorry to ramble on mate. Hope there is something relevant in there. Cheers. :mack1:

  18. since l last wrote about the trials and travails of my B 61 l have found out a lot more about repairing moose than l wanted to. after the last post l painted her up and thought the battle was over. l put plates and insurance on it and took her to get inspected she started to skip and smoke on the way and while in the garage discovered not firing on # 6. back home (total trip 2 miles ) l found no compression on that cyl. After pulling rear head l discovered exhaust valve eaten away under the hard surface face until you could see through. L then iscovered #4 had the same problem but for some reason was still firing. Also l found that there was no oil going to the rocker shaft on the back head. l eventually did a complete re build on both heads and devised an outside oiler setup for the rocker shaft by running a one eighth line from the luberfiner fitting to the valve cover cap screw which l drilled to admit oil to the bracket and shaft. L had posed a question on the forum about how to solve this problem but never got any replies. l am pretty sure that #5 cam bearing had spun and shut off oil flow. Once l had it all back together it ran like a champ and still had 60 pounds cold and 40 pounds hot oil pressure. l just recently put on fuel tank #4 (the first three l cleaned and sealed but they still leaked that precious fuel) on the way back from getting fuel the engine began to lose power and when l pushed in the clutch it seized. Now l have ppan off and rear main has spun. I am getting about 2 miles per repair, forget the miles per gallon. The thrill is beginning to wear off. I have done mechanic work most of my life ( l am 61 ) and never got onto a project like this one-----more later

Gday moose. Doesnt sound like youre goin too well. I can sympathise a little, maybe not to your extent though. I bought an R615 still with the END864 in it- a bit of a colloectors item out here. It wouldnt fire up for me, but with ether it would go start and run like a dream. It had good oil pressure and didnt breathe heavily. I got it home and did an oil change only to find water in the oil. It had been sitting for a long time so I put a couple of lots of oil back in it and flushed it. This appeared to be working until I tried to start it for a 4th time and the starter jammed, or so I thought. Thinking it had hydraulic locked i removed injectors and tried to remove any fluid from the liner. It didnt move. I removed the sump and in doing so discovered a crack and a piece chipped out of the back of the block, hidden by the starter motor. Then once the sump was off I found it had picked up a main and locked up. The engine is out now and the crank has been ground and block repaired. I got the fuel pump checked and its buggered. Its a rotary and nearly impossible to find replacement parts for. You cant beat old trucks! If it were anything else but a Mack I wouldve gone mad by now. Stick with it mate, hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel isnt an oncoming train! Cheers :mack1:

  19. Hi Skip, what did the cooling passages look like in the head? I'll bet there was very limited service to this area.

    Rob

It looked like the engine had been sitting in a dam. There were no dust seals on the top of the injectors. The truck had been used as a runabout at a saw mill and between the intake, water manifold and the injectors and their recesses was just baked on saw dust and wood chips. I havent seen many bad ones but that has to take the cake :mack1:

  20. I just started driving an 88 R688ST with a 10 speed, the one with a 5 speed box with direct, high, neutral, and reverse for each gear. Often it grinds when I pull it to the next gear. For example, when shifting from 2 high to 3 direct, I shift to direct and pull the lever to neutral and I starts grinding in Neutral. It does the same thing from 4th to 5th. Is this common, or am I doing something wrong. Don't get me wrong, I've driven several eaton fullers with gear splitters, so I understand the concept. I'd like to know if there are any tricks to the trade. Give me a break and don't laugh, I'm a newbie!

I know where you're coming from mate. My brother had an Ultra Liner with a 12spd and the gear linkage was fairly heavy and slow which seemed perfect for shifting. There always seemed to be a bit of a tingle going form 4D to 5L, it just had to be a bit slower. Now hes got a superliner and it seems very hard to get a smooth shift in 4th and 5th. And when you grate a gear you know all about it! Im not much of a driver but he goes alright and still has the same trouble :mack1:

  21. hey skip, what's the best to use the silastic or the gasket form gleemans i have been getting heaps of stuff from gleemans so that not a drama.does it use oil????havent driven it only off the step deck i put it up with and straight into my shed.have you got that other f-model yet??did it come from mack newcastle???there has been one there for over 12 months???thanks adrian

How are you Adrian? I used the gaskets with a light smear of blue silastic on both sides. Too much silastic will push the gasket out and try to split it. Id just fix the leaks and run it and go from there. It may have had a blocked breather at some stage. The crankcase pressure would have to be pretty severe to blow out that gasket. There is a clamp on a bolt for a water hose as well, it may have been loose or removed at some stage. Havent picked her up yet. It did come from mack newcastle originally but that was probably over 12 months ago. A mate of Dads in Albury bought it to restore it but recently passed away so Dad wound up with it. I think I know the truck you're talking about, 237 6spd? It looks very neat and the motor has been done up in their shop but old mate wanted 25 grand for it. Its still only an F model with a 237. I dont think he had too much idea he tried to tell me it had a quad box in it. Theres a truck show in Melbourne next week at Sandown. Have you heard of it? Mostly good old gear there

  22. I built a puller using a 3lb slide hammer with a nut that fastened to the high pressure fitting. It worked well with a little effort and solvent dumped along the sides of the injector body. I did pull one injector body in half but that was because I really had to get physical as it was stuck but good. I then used an internal pipe wrench in the broken injector body still stuck inside the head and once it would turn in the bore was readily extracted.

    Rob

That seems to be an effective way of gettin them out Rob. I had one recently where i pulled all 6 injectors in half. The heads were off and I ended up pressing them out with a hydraulic press. They were the worst Ive seen, 3 of the injector tubes pressed out with the injectors
