We have 2 superliners both which are 88 that are a little different and I can figure out why. Mine has dayton wheels on the drive axles which I happen to like and the other one has aluminum wheels (bud wheels). I get that it's how someone originally ordered them no big deal. This is where it gets weird..... My dads truck with with the aluminum wheels all the way around are 8 lug!!! Mine has standard 10 lug wheels on the steer axle. I can figure out why someone would order it that way. The other strange difference is his truck has the power steering pump bolted to the backof the air compressor and the reservoir on the drivers side of the engine. Mine has the steering pump bolted to the engine on the lower passengers front side with the reservoir bolted next to it. Someone explain to me why they are like this. Thanks scott.

Always, always, check the unloader side of the system first for this issue, if its not an unloader line leak its the unloader seals 95% of the time. Changing governors wont fix a recurring dryer purge, changing compressors only fixes the issue if the unloader seals are bad and its a whole lot cheaper and easier to replace the seals than the whole compressor. I think Ive fixed this same issue a hundred times maybe more, its a very common problem, I used to keep a squirt bottle with soapy water and an unloader rebuild kit on my toolbox when I worked at Howard Baer it was so common. Glad you got it fixed before you spent big money on a compressor.
So many people including techs automatically think it needs a compressor. It's crazy!!! I kept telling them how could it need a compressor if the compressor is pumping the system up?? It comes down to when someone else is spending your money it automatically needs a compressor!

My compressor is a bendix tru flow 501. Not sure what the kit part number was. I went to the mack dealership gave them my vin and asked for a unloaded kit. Pretty simple to install even came with instructions. I recommend doing this first. The seals are small and like 84superdog said they are most likely missing or torn.

Ok got it fixed..... This is the update: I replaced the governor.... Same issue, replaced some small leaks on the air tanks, issue still there. Went to the local Mack dealership picked up a unloaded kit for the compressor for $23 bucks. Took out the unloader pistons and there's the problem. The seals were rotted away. Installed the new unloaded kit and everything is working great. Another reason I love these old trucks, $23 dollar fix. That would never happen with these new trucks today.

Its possible but its more likely an air leak on the unloader side, get a spray bottle with a little dish soap mixed with water and with the truck running go spray everything down from te governor to the tank on the unloader line, I'll bet somewhere you'll see bubbles. If you build up to pressure and it stays up on the gauge but continues to purge there is a leaky line or o ring on the unloader side of the system, this won't show on the gauge but unless it holds pressure it will start the process all over again.
If it were leaking wouldn't I see a air pressure loss over night?

Are there ways to rebuild the compressor or do u have to replace them?
-
What is your pressure gauge figures when it's purging?
I have the same problem, the pressure comes up to 145-150 (must be held about 120) and then the dryer starts to "pffff".
If I apply brakes to drop the psi down it doesnt.
Looks like all the discribed above, I just don't get myself to resolving but it's a hobby truck.
My pressure goes to 120-125 then stops and purges but never really drops.

there are two air lines that go to the dryer, one is the unloader line, its stamed on the dryer. When the air dryer builds to 120 nominal psi the piston in the governor shifts closing the unloader line and opening the purge line, springs on the unloader valves in the head of the air dryer are overcome with air pressure and are held open. If an air dryer purges way too often the problem 9 times out of 10 is a leak in the unloader side of this system, be it a leak in the 1/4" line, the governor itself or the unloader valves in the head of the compressor. In a perfect system when you reach 120psi the unloader system holds this pressure until you use enough system air (braking, air horn or aux functions) to reach your cut in pressure (approx 90psi) when the sytem will re charge to cut out pressure (115-125psi) at that point the system will again close the valve and purge the system. Long story short, if its purging more than your using air, you have a leak in the unloader side about 90% of the time.
So your saying the governor or the compressor is possible bad?

Just noticed my dryer purging way to much. Not sure where to start or what to look for as a problem. My truck is a 1988 superliner. Any help would be great.

Interoir pics?

Your truck looks amazing. Can I ask where u got those fender mirrors from? I'm looking for a set like that and all I can find is the tripod style. Thanks for your help and great looking truck again.
-
I'm looking for 2 post fender mirrors. What I mean is the arms that hold the mirrors to the fenders. One mounts to the side and the other to the top of the fender. All I can find is the tripod or 3 post style. If you look thru most older superliner pictures you can see what I'm talking about. I personally think they look better...... More sleeker. Any ideas?

E6 with small oil pan and 2 lube filters, or 2 lube filters and centi-max approx. 34 Qts.
E6 with large oil pan and 3 lube filters approx. 58 Qts
Ron
Ok so we r thinking its about 8-9 gallons?
-
This may not be strait forward either but….. When I change the oil in my E6, I always put 30 litres (7.92 US gallons) back in. Thats including the oil in the filters.
I can't say for sure that is the exact amount. I put oil from a 5 gal can into a smaller container then into the truck. So there is some guessing involved... And if it is a Fri. or Sat. night there might be some alcohol involved.
I based my us gal on….. 1 us gallon is 3.79 litres
Keith
I always thought it was a lot more then that. But your probably right.
-
ok I don't know if this topic is beat or not but does anyone know the correct oil capacity for a e6 350 engine, im taking with all new filters when doing a complete oil change? I can never get a straight forward answer.
-
Yup that's what I thought. I was considering that truck when I was looking. It's really clean but I wasn't really looking for a sleeper truck. Nice rig tho!!

Thought I recognized that truck. It's a northern truck from Indiana or so I believe. Used to be a over the road truck. Sharp lookin rig.

Ih farms 2, did u purchase that truck recently?
-
Do u just run the ground wire from the second tank directly to the guage and just have the grounds on top of each other at the guage?

I know milk is heavy but I haul water all day long and my ole superliner does great. We actually have 2 Superdawgs haulin water.
