  1. I like to use Silicone Spray Lubricant, stead of ether, it makes them spin faster when gets to engine, they will fire with it, and doesnt possess the "lockup" capapbilities that ether does. I will prolly discover a few years down the road that it causes engine cancer in lab rats of something though, hopefully that will only be if your in california. randyp

Never heard of that, that's good to know. I've sprayed wd-40 in a chain saw carb. to get it started.

  2. I think Rob is learning what those of us that drive trucks for a living have already figuered out the hard way! driving a truck on ice/snow sucks! trucks' like a pig on skates in bad weather! dont take much to get one stuck!.......Mark

Yeah, I don't care for it any more. If it starts to get bad,I look for a place to stop, where I used to keep going-they can call me what they want,I don't care. I've had trucks passing me running 60-65 mph on snow many times. It was snowing when I was going through Chicago headed to Wisconsin last week. Some truck driver was on the cb arguing with someone he thought was going too slow.He kept saying it was 34 degrees and the road was not slick,it was just wet. I stopped to pay the toll and took off spinning thru the first few gears, with 46,000 lbs. on. About a mile further up the road a pickup went off the road, through the ditch, and up against the wall. And that other driver was still headed south saying it wasn't slick.

I stopped north of Indianapolis on the way back and waited until midnight to leave. It was still slick all the way back, but at least there's not as much traffic to deal with at that time.

  3. Man o man! i give you flatbedders a lot of credit! i'll be dam if i'd be out puttin on them dam tarps, chains ,straps! believe me,my job aint easy, but no way in hell would i want to "F" with a flatbed! LOL!.............Mark

You'd get used to it  It was one below in Orchard Park last week and when I folded my tarp the smallest I could get it was about the size of a mini van.

Usually these beams don't have to be tarped,as they are stored outside in the weather at the mill. Some places want them tarped in winter because they don't want road salt on them-I can kinda understand that. But a few places want them tarped year round and that makes no sense to me.

One of our drivers took a load to Masury,Ohio-they want them tarped year round-took his paper work inside, then came back out and untarped the load in the parking lot. When the guy came out to get him he told him to put the tarps back on,it had to be tarped when he pulled inside,or either he could take it back-and it was a sunny day. He put them back on,but he won't go there anymore, and I don't blame him. Everybody hates going to Masury because they're such a-holes.

  4. Shes a big one alright, she's laid up for repairs, looks like they just painted the super structure...very interesting and cool pics! Wonder what she has for power...more than likely Sulzer diesels or Fairbanks Morse...gots to be big though! And I'm sure she likes her fuel LOL!

I saw lots of small holes in the sides, down low, with oars sticking out of them. Unfortunately you can't see them in the pictures.

  5. Well i hate to admit it,but the only person on here thats "right" all the time is me! ( just kiddin'! my last name is Wright)...........Mark

I used to think Rob was, until he tried to turn around in a corn field with 2 feet of snow on it. Another dream shattered...

  6. I saw a big freighter like this once up in Duluth,MN. i was looking for my stop in a blinding snowstorm, called the customer for directions,he told me to "turn right at the ship, follow road to the next left etc." i said "i dont see no boat, but i'm right beside a big gray building" he says "dumbass, does the building say milwaukee iron ore on it?" yep! says me! THATS THE SHIP! this thing looked to be about 4-5 blocks long!....i just could'nt see the space between the ship and the dock! i dont remember the ships name, but do remember it was perminantly docked there for people to tour, and it was a fairly old one considerably smaller than some of the ones one the great lakes today.........Mark

Duluth is right across the bridge you can see to the rear of the ship. Actually this is a different ship, but you can see the bridge to Minnesota behind it.

  7. I'm right there with ya buddy.

This website right here is my favorite Barr None. Nice people, great humor, appropriately administered, rigorously adjusted to fit the memberships' needs.

A big thanks to Barry for the job he does, and the support of Watt's Mack for the opportunity provided.

The ATHS website is just a bit too "Right Wing" for me. There too are some very nice people I miss speaking with. However, the administration needs adjusted, (my opinion) as the membership is nowhere near receiving the service the cost of membership should be providing. Funny thing is when asked; problems are always "blamed" on someone else. Nobody seems willing to take initiative for correction/modification.

Again, these are my opinions, (cherished and valued only by me) but I'm following the same path of progression as you.

    Rob

Cherished and valued by me too, especially the part about this being the best site with the best people. Barry probably doesn't get near the credit he deserves for a job well done. Hmmmmm..."The Adventures of Barry,Super Hero"...I don't know, needs work. It's just not as catchy as Spot the Wonder Dog.

  8. That ship appears to be beached...its deff sitting on the bottom because the you can clearly see the bow thruster. They might be getting ready to cut her up...looks like the Edmund Fitzgerald, deff your typical great lakes cargo ship

I thought of the Edmund Fitzgerald as soon as I saw it. Here's some more pictures of it. It was so big it was hard to even get the whole ship in one picture.

  9. I think they were going for a "ghetto" version of the old style White-freightliner 2 piece split bumper, plywoods a whole lot cheaper and much easier to cut into the shape of a bumper! LOL!

Nice looking Marmon-I like it

I do wish I could find a model kit like that now though-looks like the same one I got for my younger brother for Christmas one year...about 40 years ago.

  10. And your trip went alright?

    Rob

Oh yeah,I went to Orchard Park, unloaded, then picked up some beams in Erie and went to Superior Wisconsin. Came back down to Chicago and picked up some stainless steel sheets- actually 6 lifts in Gurnee, then I had to layover to get one more lift in Franklin Park. That put me in snow, rain, sleet, snow, hurricanes, typhoons, hail storms, and snow all the way from about Lafayette,In. to Lewisburg,W.V. Unloaded yesterday at Oneal Steel in Madison Heights then had to go to Petersburg to load. And that had to be tarped too,55' beams going to Cincinnati.

Saw a big boat in Superior-it was big as a ship.

  11. I hitched up last night to the trailer for the first time. Had a hell of a time cause it don't have no spring brakes, the service brakes do not seem to work, and I hadn't blocked the tires: Anyways, I've noticed when I let the clutch out in 1st gear, (second to me) the trailer causes the truck to "buck" or torque up until it gets rolling. It did this a couple of times and when I place the trans is low gear, (1st to me) the truck starts off really easy but runs out of gear shortly afterward. All the bushings are tight meaning transmission bisquits, engine isolators, torque links, trunion, and saddles for the springs.

Once you get rolling, the upshift is very smooth. I haven't been far enough to test downshifting yet. I then went back to my property, was attempting to turn around in the dark, and while performing the swing got the trailer tandems dropped into a depression with the tractor sitting on "glare ice". In other words, everything stopped right there. I can't go forward, or backward, so there she sits in the back yard. Of couse not having my other winch truck, (Fred the crane) running for over a year, he won't start. I then called Jamie in from home, dug ole "Fred" out of his own ice chest he was buried in, and pushed him inside the shop to warm up. There has got to be a valve under the trailer either stuck, or frozen as there are absolutely no working brakes whatsoever.

Going back to the shop shortly. Will get "Fred" up and ready to perform, (as usual), winch the tractor and trailer back onto a grippable service and pick up where I left off.......

    Rob

Probably the just type of clutch. I drove a cabover KW with the ceramic clutch disc and it would shake the cab starting off loaded. When the wheels started turning you just had to let off it and go,couldn't slip it much and ease off it or you'd get a whole lot of cab shaking going on.

Or, much like a 5 speed Mack, you can take off in low and soon as the wheels turn you can shift to the next gear.

  12. I dont know what Spot was up to all that time, but i guess his independence helped him survive. Im thinking he may have went on a long term hog hunt, hates them with a vengeance, will do anything to get at one, also armidillos, hates them too. Just glad to have him back, feel safer now. randyp

Possibly...no telling what he was up to.

  13. Roll a window down about 12" and fashion a piece of stiff cardboard or plastic to fill the opening simulating the closed window. Cut a hole in the cardboard and push a shop vacume hose through connected to the blowing side of the unit, duct tape the cardboard securely, turn the vacume on, and flood the cab with soapy water. With the air blowing and pressurizing the cab you will see bubbles wherever their is an air leak. Usually if air gets out, water gets in.

I hate chasing water leaks especially on new cars....... Sat many times in an automated car wash looking for water intrusion.

    Rob

"flood the cab with soapy water"...I don't get it. How deep should the water be in the cab? Does it have to be full to the ceiling,to the top of the dash, or is just up to the seats enough?

  14. Yea. I had made a comment the other day about how silly it is trying to up load a pic. Seams the system cant size it or if you post more than 2 they remove them and put them up as a link only. I feel that when ever were trying to show off or show some pics of trucks you have to go back in time and do it the hard way. I like to open a web page to surf the new content and have the pics pop up as its loading. Its why I rarely link pics over there. to much BS. I will search for Truxnut and will send him a PM

I'm a member too and had to jump through lots of hoops to post a picture of a steerable dolly I used to pull that was made out of a Mack truck chassis. Then after I jumped through all the hoops I still couldn't post the picture.

I've sent them ATHS Truck Show pictures that are posted there-and they're posted through someone else's name, they never even told me thanks,go to hell, kiss their ass...nothing. I'll keep reading the magazine and going to a show when I can but I don't even bother looking at the ATHS website anymore.

  15. About 4 months ago there was a guy on this site in the Hudson Valley of NY state had a white 78 F- model 237 5 speed single axle (was a tandem)for sale for $3200 then i saw it listed later for $2800 it looked pretty decent. the phone # 845 883-5287 his name is Mike. Ron

Ah-hah!..finally found it. Don't know if this truck is still available, I also saw it somewhere for sale cheaper, but it really doesn't look bad for the price.Probably was listed in Wheels of Time or something.
