  1. Hi all; This isn't a Mack, but it is a good truck. I'm posting it as a favor for my friend Gordon, since he's being gracious enough to let me store my trucks on his land. Sheet metal's pretty good, runs pretty good, has a 272(?) gas OHV V-8,5 speed & electric 2 speed axle Steering feels pretty tight, brakes work if you pump 'em. Bed dumps but is low on fluid. Glass is good, tires hold air but aren't too good (2 good ones go with it) He has clear Title to it. He'd like to get $1,500.00 for it but might be talked down a little if you flash the cash. If it doesn't sell first I'll go get a few pics when I get over this cold/pneumonia. Probably easiest to just call him at 775-934-0720 Tell him Speed told you about it. HE might even get you some pics. I'd really like to see a friend from this forum get it. Speed

  4. Glad to hear you got your ride back. I know what you mean with getting good at shifting. On my little '54 GMC 2 Ton,I'm just now getting the hang of shifting my 5 & 3. I'm still pretty slow, and it's a shift I need to do a couple of times up through the gears, and a couple coming back down. It'll help a lot when I get steer axle tires and a toe-in adjustment,so I can let go of the wheel for a second to shift both boxes at once. (The "reach through the wheel" trick doesn't work-the sticks are too far away to reach.) Well, have fun practicing! Speed

    WHY?

Rockford Files-"DON'T GO IN THERE,JIMMIE! THEY'RE GONNA GET YOU FROM BEHI--yep,see? I TOLD ya so..."Great show. I always stuff DISH's advertising into their reply envelope and send it back to 'em,on THEIR dime. Speed

    WHY?

I don't have cable anymore, but those are shows I was or wasn't interested in. I've found that since I shut down the TV I get more done around here. Now,though,I leave the radio on more. Political Talk Radio, mostly. (The cats like that, since I'm out of the house more-keeps 'em from feeling abandoned I imagine.) Speed
  7. Used to be,"They do EVERYTHING bigger in Texas.";I guess now it's,"They do EVERYTHING bigger in Australia." Speed

    WHY?

That's typical "Reality TV" fare-brainless ineptitude, contrived disaster, shouting matches, manufactured stress over non-issues,etc. Fortunately, most of us (IMHO) don't waste our time with this kind of drivel. WE have REAL problems and issues to deal with ,and don't need that Hollyweird Drama. I like "Ice Road Truckers" in SPITE of the "drama",because it's close enough to actual reality to be mostly believable, and I just like trucks and the people driving on the show. I watched "Fast-n-Loud" a few times but quickly developed a real dislike for that jackass who tells sellers what they want to hear,("Yeah-my Dad had one of these, and I swore to him I'd restore one JUST like his,in his honor..."),buys it cheap, butchers it and auctions it. Guys that work like him have ruined more deals for me than I can count . Speed
  9. Might be the same guy -he has a bunch of other stuff advertised on CL-Reno,in "Heavy Equipment". Speed
  10. I'm just the opposite-I don't think I've ever owned a stock, original vehicle except my first couple of Harleys, and that only lasted a week or so. I GUESS you could leave the frame original and stash the other axle so you could re-install it when you come to realize that more is better. Speed
  11. That's a little beauty they came up with JUST for insulin-dependent Diabetics. It's only valid IN Nevada, requires my Dr. to sign a statement saying my Glucose level has been in good control for one year consecutively (impossible with Brittle Diabetes) and I'll have to double check, but it seems I have to re-new it every year, including the physical. It's just hard to justify a CDL that stops me from doing the one thing I need a CDL FOR. I would not be legal to haul a trailer load of scrap to Utah or Idaho, where I could get twice what the local scrap yard pays. Next time Dutch acquires an old car or truck from out of State, unless he can get it moved to the Port and find a way to load it,I can't get it to him.. Sucks... Speed
  12. If the extra axle is the deal-breaker,it's not that big a deal to remove one and bob the frame a little. For ME the deal-breaker is the part right after the dollar sign. That and the fact that I'd end up with an awesome truck I'd have to break the law to drive. (That "restricted" CDL is just TOO costly for the amount of good I could get out of it.) Speed
  13. seems like women are kinda like the government-every time you feel like you understand what's going on,everything changes. It's like they don't WANT you to know what's going on. Speed
  14. Say those three words that mean the world to the love of your life-I WAS WRONG. If THAT doesn't fix things, tell her you'll call it quits with your other girl-no,wait-that didn't work so well last time. I got nothin'. Best of luck to you and the missus, and I hope she realizes what she has and hangs in there with ya. Merry Christmas to you and yours! Speed
  15. Thought somebody here might want a new project for the new year. Speed http://reno.craigslist.org/hvo/4243771938.html
  16. You're right-I hadn't read it through before throwing my comment in. My bad. I did read the rest afterwards, very interesting story,as I've been through similar stuff. I also saw the four video clips-Very good stuff. Have you had a chance to motor it around a bit yourself? Learning a new-to-you truck is the fun part. I REALLY LOVE the sound of that beast! From the videos it looks like it even rides pretty nice. I know I didn't say it earlier,CONGRATULATIONS on getting a nice truck, right outta the gate. You really can't go wrong with the people on this forum ready to help and coach you through the big truck stuff. BTW-The comment about locating the owner by loading it up was just kidding around, although there's a grain of truth in it. Sorta like trying to find the owner of property-if you open a gate and let yourself in,the owner usually finds you. Sometimes sets the wrong tone for negotiations, but at least you know WHO you'll be dealing with. LOL Anyway,be sure to keep doing videos-it's good to see you enjoying the truck. (Or NOT enjoying it in some cases, probably.) Have a Merry Christmas! Speed
  17. One sure way to find the owner is to go out there and start pulling it onto a lowboy trailer. The owner will appear as if by MAGIC. Speed
  18. Actually,I read it to mean the Mack is no harder to handle than a sedan,ie. steers easy, brakes well, etc. I agree though, they probably over-state that by a pretty large margin. The test would be to parallel park one on a hill after a 300 mile drive finishing with an hour of big-city traffic.LOL Speed
  19. FWIW,and this is what I'd consider "unsubstantiated", I was told by a guy who worked for GM back then that the cars DID tend to have the rear lift-at speeds over 150 mph. They discovered it in the wind tunnel but decided since they were pretty stable at 120 and it was VERY unlikely they'd be goung fast enough to encounter the instability problem problem, they went ahead and put 'em on the road. Speed
  20. There WAS that tendency. A guy I knew in High School had one,and he said he learned a couple of "tricks" that solved that problem. He never would tell anyone what he did,but from the percentage of races he won, they worked. (Built 348 TriPower,4 speed) For the record,I like ANY Cadillac built before '71,and my all time favorite GM car is the '58 Pontiac Bonneville, with a stick, not an automatic. (I like '58 Chevies a lot, too.) Speed
  21. Hi Brent; I think you'll find that tarping the truck will cause the top to rust out-that's what happened to my Catalina. I agree that if you figure a couple of years of storage for your truck, that money would go a long ways towards buying a steel building big enough to cover your truck and some parts. As mentioned, tarp the floor space, but first spray the ground heavily with a strong weed killer, then roll the tarp down. Once you have the truck inside, take a box of cheap dryer sheets and put a couple under the hood, one close to any openings into the engine, open hoses,on the intake manifold,a couple interwoven in the plug wires,on the starter and generator. get in the cab and put one in the glovebox, stuff a couple under the dash in the wiring, under each seat, behind the seat, anywhere the headliner is open,in the defroster vents,a couple on the floor and on the seats, close the cab up as tight as possible except a vent, and put a dryer sheet there, too. wrap a dryer sheet around the wiring to the back of the truck about every 3 or 4 feet;if there's any rubber hose,(vacuum or air),treat them like the wiring. Also,if there's any tool boxes etc. put a sheet in them and close 'em up. It's good to set the axles on blocks to get the weight off the tires, and either drain the coolant or put new antifreeze in,drain the fuel tanks, and it it's a runner, run the engine at idle until it quits from no fuel. I'd also do an oil change to keep the acids in used oil from eating it up from the inside. Pull the battery out. I think I'd also drain the air tanks and leave all drains open,so condensation won't put rust into the air system. If your truck has stacks, make a plug for each side from a shop rag (or a bundle of 'em),and put a dryer sheet with 'em,and lightly stuff them into the stacks, but leave a tail you can get ahold of,and put a coffee can over each one. Take a walk around the truck and anywhere you see aplace where wasps could nest or mice could get into, poke a dryer sheet into it. I KNOW-this may sound like overkill, but the dryer sheets really do keep mice and wasps out,and those are both BIG problems wjere I am. I'd rather OVER do it than have to do a bunch of damage control later. Some of this may not apply to your truck, but if it was mine this is what I'd try to do, Adjust as the situation demands. Speed
  22. Thanks for the timely reply, bro. Does YOUR "bigmacktrucks.com" email still work right? I was mainly concerned that the email service through this forum might have been handed over to the big GOOGLE empire. BTW-I DID finally get Yahoo back to (relatively) normal. Apparently THAT problem was a malfunction in NY computer. I shut it down and re-started it and everything was back to it's usual self. Now I'm wondering if my "shortcut" to bigmacktrucks.com email got corrupted or maybe I set that up wrong at the start(?) No-because I was using it as my go-to email address whenever Yahoo did something I had to sort out,and it always worked fine. Well,Have a happy Veterans Day,see you on the forums. Speed
  23. Maybe you can answer a question for me. I clicked on my shortcut for my BigMackTrucks email account tonight because I'm having some assistance info sent there,to help me access my usual email account (yahoo) inbox;since I can't read any of my yahoo email, they're sending some information to the BMT account. So anyway I clicked on it GOOGLE came up instead, and it won't recognize my log in name or password. What happened to my BMT email account??? I'm not one to complain, but this is getting scary. I now have TWO email accounts I can't get into! And they're sending my "Help" info to EACH OTHER!! Speed
  24. When I worked in the GM dealer's body shop we used to replace 3 or 4 of those"indestructible" Duallie fenders every week. We kept 4 sets in stock. Seems a lot of those "Gentleman Truckers" would forget about that "other" pair of wheels when pulling into,or backing out of,a parking space or backing the boat into the back yard. Speed
  25. The fun begins for me when the flagger stops traffic when you have a jerk like that up close behind you,and you drop it into reverse, bump the truck backwards about a foot, and watch said jerk scramble to find SOMEPLACE to get out of your way. (Sometimes it gets so "fun" you can SMELL their fear... ) Not being maudlin or anything, but when I have to stop driving,I'll stop "living". I love driving more than I love eating, and I LOVE eating.
