I don't know how necessary it is, someone else will have to chime in, but these ASET motors are really particular and strange IMO, I'd be worried to not put it back in. They're not too expensive from Mack dealers it looks like, but PAI does not have any stock of them. Part number 25099919.

If it is anything like the screens in Cummins engines, they are there to be easily and cheaply replaced, to protect parts downstream that are hard and expensive to replace if plugged with debris.  Remove or defeat at your own risk. 

Is it in the EGR cooler line?

The screen on these is under the oil cooler, it runs down towards the bypass hose I call the cactus. I'll paste a screenshot:
