Hey everyone. I'm new to this dump truck and dump trucks in general. I was wondering how to properly check the fluid levels in my hydraulic resivor that sits on top of the frame between the cab and the lift cylinder. There is no dip stick or window on the tank. Any help is appreciated. I also apologize if this is the wrong thread I'm posting on I'm new on this forum.

Its tough when the tank is hidden with the body down. I have over filled them a few times and made a mess. I like what tjc suggests.

Welcome to BMT...Any dump trucks Iv ever drove had a sight tube on the side of the tank. You could clean off the tank around the filler cap and open it then dip it with a clean stick or small metal bar.It should not be full to the top but close. As the guys said If its over full it will dump out some oil....messy!!!

even with the body down i can easily see the oil level tube on my new truck.....

once they get older it is kind of hard to see oil level in the tube though.

the 2005 had a door in the top of the piston housing to access the air bleeder valve on top of the piston, and also to access the tank fill. that was on a J&J body.

when you are up to your armpits in alligators,

it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp..

depending on the manufacturer of the body, but for a tank on frame between cab and body there should be a plastic or glass tube on front of the tank.

but basically put, if the piston goes all the way up without chatter there is enough oil in the tank. if you put too much in the tank, it will blow out the vent when body is lowered all the way down.

when i add oil to a low system, i add one gallon at a time until piston chatter goes away and body goes all the way up. then add 1 more gallon.

Thank you for your reply. I do believe it has chatter when going up it feels like it's bumping it up inch by inch instead of a smooth steady push. About how much fluid should be in the tank when the bed is all the way up? 1/2 tank 3/4? Thank you.

Thank you sir. I definitely tried to clean the tank in hope there was a window like my other equipment has but I didn't see one or a dip stick at the end of the cap. Then I thought there has to be a way to position the bed and then just fill to the near top but I didn't wanna overfill the tank and cause a problem.

with full piston extension you should still have 2-3 gallons in the tank.

but it is not measured at full extension, it is measured full piston collapse.

all the way down i like to keep the tank about 4-5 inches from the top.

Thank you I'm gonna try and reach it with the bed all the way down if I can't get to it I'm gonna raise it just enough to to able to engage the safty arm. What typ of fluid do I need to add? I have seem people adding transmission fluid but don't know if that's correct?

No tranny fluid.  Typically a 46 W hyd. Oil.  I think for G.A. that would be good enough

I'm glad I asked. I did get a smell of trany fluid how bad would it be to just add a iso 46 w? I have plenty of that on hand
