  1. Chuck,

Do you have any pictures of the front and/or drivers side?

My engine has a oil filler neck just in front of the coil and the exhaust manifold is a little different than yours but overall they look the same. I do not know what the 465 looks like.

What part of CT are you in? I am thinking it is about 18 hours one way so it might be somewhat of a drive, do you have any idea what the engine might weigh?

  2. Hi,

I'm new to the Mack forum and would like to ask a couple questions from some fire truck experts. I'm building a model of a Mack B-61 pumper and am trying to get it as perfect as possible. My questions are:

What would the rear bed of the pumper be made of? The model that I'm building has lines running from front to back, so it appears that this may have been wood on the original. If so, would this have been varnished, natural color wood? If it wasn't wood, what color would it have been painted (or chromed)?

What would the interior cab color be painted?

What color were the hose reels and the sturctural brackets that supported them?

Thanks for any information that anybody can provide. When I'm done with the model, I'll post a picture on the forum.

    Thanks again!

    Mark

    Mark,

All of the beds in the Mack pumpers that I have seen have been made of wood. I am not sure if they were varnished but I know they were not painted, my guess is they would have been done in linseed oil.

If the pumper was made as a fire truck from the assembly line they inside was red, if it was made into a fire truck later most likely it was Mack green.

Hose reels were red and supports were also red, hose guides or rollers were for the most part chrome.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. Sure, I'll take it. Funny, I've been watching e-bay but must have missed that one. DEN

It was listed twice and no one bid the first time and I was the only bidder the 2ND time it was listed.

His seller ID is 195751 and the item number was 8073156026.

Here is a picture of it as well.

Good luck! It would have been a 24 hour round trip for me, thats why I had a lower bid. It would have been around $500 for me in fuel and food for me and my buddy to go pick it up.

  4. Well, that didn't work very well. I will try it again:

I happen to be looking for a '48 model 45. Will you be purchasing this vehicle? If not, would you mind sharing the contact info? Trying to find a replica of our original engine. The records have been destroyed so there is no chance of finding the original VIN. As I recall, as a rookie firefighter opening up that big old hood, I didn't see any copper! But I seem to recall the crusty old captain at the time cursing the Continental engines! Thanks. DEN

What I was looking at buying was only the engine and chassis, it was on Ebay last week.

I had the highest bid but I did not make the reserve price, if you want the Ebay item number I can give it to you

but I am betting the seller has taken it to the crusher. No harm in trying though.

  5. According to my fire truck book by harvey eckart, the type 45s had Continental 290 or 330 CI, 103 or 123 L head, about 544 of them were built.

Thanks for the info, I really need to get that book for myself.

I am pretty sure it has the Continental 330 since the casting numbers on the block have 330. I wonder if the 330 would be underpowerd for my S75, the 45's used the same frame and were about the same size as the 75's

  6. I have a 1969 Mack CF Pumper with the EN707F Gas motor. Wondering if anyone has a good source of consumable parts.

My current challenge is for oil filters. I was told that Mack stopped producing the 236-gb-222 cartridge filter a few years ago and stock has all but dried up.

Has anyone successfully used another brand of filter? Any special gaskets or modifications needed? I have not found any good cross references.

I love this truck. Thanks for the assistance.

I sent you an Email, let me know if you did not get it.

  7. Does anyone know what engine the type 45 pumpers used?

The fellow who has this for sale does not know anything about it, here is the info he has.

The engine number is: 5N330G468UK (Hard to make out a couple of the didgits)

    "Copper Chrome" cast in engine

    8/8/48 cast in cylinder head

    Chassis # 45S1488

    Thanks!

  8. So does anyone put any thing in there fuel. I was at Ford dealer and they were pushing there super fix all stuff for the 6.0 L. I have put lucas fuel additive in but did not really notice anything different. So before I head out for the summer I thought I would see what you all think.

    Jaime

Every now and then I put some Marvel Mystery Oil in my F250 super duty, I have not noticed much of an improvement but I have heard that it helps keep the injectors clean. One other thing is that it does not blow smoke when I put the pedel down in 6th gear when it has the MMO in it.

  9. HERE ARE THE PREFIXES COPIED FROM OLDMACKSRUS.COM http://www.oldmacksrus.com/production_numbers.htm

Now the fire truck combinations! The good guys at the Mack Museum and Harvey

Eckart had to do some “head scratchin” on these

CF - fire truck with Chrysler Corp. drive train

FA - aerial ladder fire truck

FC - fire truck chassis without fire body. This designation started in 1965

FCD - fire truck chassis with diesel engine without fire body

FD - fire truck with diesel engine. This designation started in 1964

FMD - don’t have a clue. Only built in 1963

FSW - six wheel (tandem axle) fire truck. This designation started in 1958 for fire trucks

but had been used in trucks prior to the B model series.

FT - fire truck tractor. This designation started in 1965 but fire truck tractors were also

    built before this date.

    Trent,

Do you have any idea of what the S would stand for on my S75 pumper?

It does have six wheels but that includes the front axel. I have always thought the S stood for "service"

but since reading your post I now have no idea.

  10. GOOD EVENING

WHAT IS THE BEST ENGINE DEGREASER /CLEANER TO USE WITH A PRESSURE WASHER TO CLEAN UP THE OLD MACK? ENGINE TRANSMISSION ETC

    THANKS

    SKIP

    :thumb:

I use the purple stuf from Sam's or NAPA, spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes and hose it off. Be carfull if you use a pressure washer, it can spray water into seals and gaskets if you are too close with high pressure.

  11. Whats the status on the engine? last I heard it was stuck or something? ever find the issue?

    Trent

Well I do know what is not wrong but, I still have not found the causeof what is wrong.

The last thing I have done is to take the oil pan off and inspect the bottem end, nothing looks or feels broken

and I have also ruled out the starter, tranny and rear end as well as the clutch and all the valves. only thing left that it could be (that I know of) is a stuck piston(s) or broken timing gear. I have used PB Blaster and MMO in the cylinders and by using a pry bar I can get the flywheel to budge just a little back and fourth, every few days I try to move it some more. I am hoping that one afternoon after work I will get under it and it will make some real progress and I can start putting it back togather. (again)

I really had wanted to get it on the road by spring, looks like I have another summer of body work in front of me again! After the looong wait for the water pump I think I can wait this out as well!

  12. Hey Trent,

Sounds like yall had some fun getting it running again!

Now if I could just get mine to break loose I might have just as much as you, Last weekend I had a buddy over and we were pushing it with one of my tractors and I tore the tailboard loose from the rear of the truck! It took us the rest of the weekend just to get some new mounts made and get it back into place. Unless you look under the truck you would never know what we did. I thought about pulling it but after hearing your story I think I will keep on pushing it from now on.

  13. Through my experiences with these kind of deals. I think your wasting your time and good money after bad.

The only person that is going to win is the lawyer.

I have won judgements against three former tenants (commercial/retail space) for a total near $75,000.00 I have learned that that does not mean a thing! I can not collect a dime from them if they do not want to pay.

One person had everything put into his wife's name another claimed bankrupcy and the third can not be found.

I now will not let any of my tenants go over 30 days after that their butt is out the door and I still have to take them to court to get them out of my spaces.

Best thing you can do is what you have done, post his name here and maybe that will keep someone else from having the same problem. We have a forum here just for that kind of thing good or bad.

  14. Since you guys are the experts here, I will ask newbie questions. Since I didn't find it yet on the forum, Does the serial number have any specific meaning, as in year, body style, etc. Also on my data plate, it calles it a model 45 S/N 45 S 1240. Since I am very new to Macks, and trucks in general, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have not already done this you can call or write to the Mack museum and for a donation

they will send you information about your truck. Almost all of the Mack trucks from that era

had a factory photo taken and they all had build sheets telling what was ordered for the truck when

    it was built.

IMO it is worth the money.

The 45 means you should have a 450 GPM pump, the S is for Service which usually means fire service.

And as superdog stated the rest of the numbers are the production numbers.

Mine is S752369, I have a 750 GPM and it was the 1369 truck made of that model.

  16. I am looking for a 18" stream shaper for the deck gun on my Mack cf. If anyone has one they are looking to get rid of please let me know.

    Have you checked Ebay?

They show up there from time to time, all of the equipment on my truck was found on Ebay.

  17. Hi all. I am new here. I have a 1945 fire engine. I came to look and learn. Thanks!

    Welcome Carm,

If you have any pictures of your engine post them!

I have a 48 S-75 pumper which uses the E series cab, glad to see another lover of old apparatus here.
