  1. Thanks for the replys. I dont have the money or the shop to completely strip down and restore right now. Im only 16 so supplys are limited. Tools and stuff i can always borrow from my boss but i need more than a few tools to restore the truck. Thanks for tellin me about sandblasting the cab because i didnt even think of that. I just want to get the truck in prime so i can start doing body work on it. Rick that cab is beatiful i wish i had a place that i could strip down the truck like that. Im just trying to stop all rust and rot in its tracks right now and have it so its mechanicly sound and the body work is done pretty good then as soon as i can id like to paint it real nice.

    Thanks

  2. This is the part that scares me. Im preping and painting the truck myself, what do i need to do. I plan on buying a small sand blaster and then I'll clean the truck real good then sand blast it little by little and prime what i sand blasted each day. After i get the whole truck in primer then I'll start painting it (red?). Im putting new glass in it and all new chrome and stuff. I cant wait to get started on it. How does my plan sound? Is there anything that i should do or not do? Any brand of paint to use or stay away from? I want the truck to look good without breaking the bank then later on down the road when the funds allow it I'll re paint it real nice. There is some rot on the truck but from what i saw its fixable. The fenders are a little soft but i think with some braze and bondo they will turn out alright. The cab is also rotted in places but around the windows is solid just under the passenger door is kind of soft. Once i get it home I'll be able to really see how it is.

  3. Almost every service that we do the truck is hot, and not just warm they just came back from a heavy 5 or 600 miles. The top sections are never even being close to full and the bottoms are way overfull. Theres no where for the oil to come back up in any great amounts on the rears. The only place that it can go through is around the shaft and the oils not going to come in the topsection. They say oil level is correct when oil level in the bevel gear housing is slightly below the threads. Is slightly below where you cant reach it with a finger? For the amount of miles these trucks run everyday we cant take a chance on lubrication problems. Oil is a lot cheaper then a tow from delaware or philadelphia because of a blown rear due to lack of oil.

  4. Ofcourse you need to keep adding oil to the top section after the initial fill. Even brand new mack rears leak down from top to bottom so then you end up with an empty top section and power divider and a way over full bottom. If you dont add oil to the tops they will run dry. It doesnt take much, maybe a half gallon every 8 thousand miles or so. We service at 8 and i add about a half gallon to the top and take a half gallon out of the bottom.

  5. Its in a 64 B 61. I dont plan on working it hard or messin with the pump at all. Just a play truck to pull a trailer everynow and then. They typically run pretty good and start good though? I just want to know as much about the engine before i get it so nothing phases me.

    Thanks

  6. How are these engines? I dont see much on them. Are they reliable? How about power? The truck im buying has the 711 in it and i was just wonderin how they are. It was rebuilt before it was parked so it should be tight. Is there anything i should do before i fire it up? Its been settin about 8 years since its been started.

  7. Was driving around today and i saw a B model sittin on the side of the road, so me and my dad stopped and looked at it and more then likely the guy wants to sell it. Its a 1964 B61 tandem with a 711 and a triplex. New brakes all around and some other stuff but its been settin for like 7 years so theres a fare share of rust. He told me it ran good when he parked it but he was too busy with his other trucks to restore it. He wanted to restore it but never got a chance so he may get rid of it. He said it will run 65-70 mph which is pretty good. It could be a nice truck. I wish i had a camera when i was out there.

  8. I have a chance to get a 1960's white fuel truck for cheap but i dont know if its really worth it. I havent really taken a look at it but its in pretty rough shape. It runs pretty well and i think its got a 4x4 trans. My friend who looked at it doesnt know trucks too well so i didnt really get any specific info. Is a truck like that worth anything in good shape? I would scrap the fuel tank and put a fifth wheel on it.

    Thanks

    Chris
