  1. Nice! He didnt want to unbolt it? Looks like he took the flame wrench to it and cut the chassis...I got one better for you, my guy was told to "take the engine out" of the steel nose RD and get it ready as per the guy who bought it was coming to pick it up...my cousing and I return to find the entire nose cut off the truck (with a torch) and the floor cut out so he could unbolt the bell housing. I guess I should have mentioned to him that we were going to be saving all the tin and the cab. Make a long story short, another Mack ended up being scrapped. If ya dont do it yourself id aint gonna git dun rite lol! :D

  2. Growing up in NJ back in the day steel hoods were all the rage. All the dumps were DM800 tandems, mostly on 12.00-24 rubber. A real treat in my childhood of the '70's and 80's was to see the diehards still running B-81's. TOO COOL!!!

A friend of mine still has an everyday B81 driver...out of the B Models the 81SX was my favorite. All the trucks I've owned inlcuding the DM600 I have now are all heavy spec, 58's 20 front...I've also had 65's and 80k rears...I know I'm nuts lol! But I love the big old tanks, no matter what you throw at em they just ask for more :rmod_dump:

  3. $1000.00 bucks for new steering tires today...ouch! :pat: I thought Santa Clause was going to bring them until the wife informed me that the North Pole was out on strike this year due to contract issues with Mr Clause and the elf's foreman :idunno:

  4. I've always found it amazing in the automotive world how many pieces/parts are vendored to the manufacturers. I have Macks that use Rockwell Standard, Grumman, Delco, Leece-Neville, Bendix, and many other vendor's parts. Yet when you purchase a replacement part through the OEM manufacturer, it always has their respective name upon the package/lable. I've met the gent that purchased my 74 RL797LST new. An inexperienced operator on an excavator took out both the cab and hood when the truck was close to new. It was repaired using new Mack supplied parts including hood, and service replacement cab. When the hood is open, one can plainly see the Rockwell-Standard logo, or lable that is laminated into the fiberglass construction. The cab was actually manufactured by the Shellar-Globe company in Ohio and shipped to Mack. My understanding is the frame rails were manufactured by Alcoa in Ohio also, and shipped to Hayward for assembly.

All of the OEM's do this. They own the patents and manufacturing rights to the designs, then sub most of the manufacturing. They then run the assembly of the some of the parts. This is why the slogan "made in the USA" can mean so little. Sure it's assembled here, but "made"?, I question this part. With the global economy we live in and credit as easy to spend someone else's money the way it is, I don't really see a viable stopping point without serious overhaul.

There is no stopping what has been created with the outsource of labor. Greed has taken the place of pride in corporate minds. The children of today have no interest in working with there hands...we are a dying breed, I hate to say it. Even our children who were brought up around trucks and take pride in what was built here buy our brothers and sisters only account for 1 in maybe a million of kids today so in reality the kids we see on "jersey shore" and MTV and god knows whatever else are going to be the ones in charge 20 years from now...like I was saying buckle up boys...and girls! We are in for a ride :dwave:
  5. Heh Heh,,,listening to a detroit genset run for very long, slong with Johnny Cash would probably make me wanna stick a pistol in my mouth! Howsa bout an Onan and Credence Clearwater? "I can heah da bullfrogs calling me,,,awwwww!!!" randyp :thumb:

Credence is good...better run thru the jungle :) But I dunno bout that Onan, the wife might want to shoot me for the Detroit screamin thru the night...maybe I should just get a 5 horse Briggs and call it a day

  6. Vibrations are a nightmare to find on a Mack...usually its trial and error, been there done that. You can jack the truck up and block it in the air, run it thru the gears and try and pinpoint where the noise / vibration is coming from with the truck actually running and driving "in place" sounds hairy but we do it all the time. It just sucks to be pulling everything apart. You might just have to rebuild the power divider and not the whole rear. :MackLogo:

  7. This thread got me to looking closer at my little bit of paradise here on the eastern end of L.I.. Most of the NAPA parts stores are out of business, most all auto wrecking yards are closed due to local laws. The farms around me sell land to keep afloat nd than get there acreage taxed at the same rate as the "developed" land. The powers the be won't let a rail /truck freight line be build were the R.R. and I 495 are only 1/4 mile apart. Gas stations are closing because of unmeetable local requirements for spill containment. Grummans / U.S. Navy property was slated to be keep as a manufacturing site and now is going to be cleared to be a park. Is it this way all over or is it just here? Paul

I my friend have had enough of the Long Island lifestyle, 31 years was 30 1/2 too many LOL! I hear you on all the mom and pop stores going under its a shame, really is

  8. If all else fails as long as the brakes are released disconnect the driveshaft or pull the axles if you need to move it. Sounds like it might be the shift forks, although the stick is in neutral it may still be in gear. I'm no expert in fire rigs but I've had my fair share of worn out shift towers jamming the tranny in gear and renedering the stick useless.

  9. I think its a good thing, I'd rather see them being used and we all know they do get used when shipped...I've seen pictures of trucks from Nigeria hauling 35 to 40 ton in a 10 wheel DM800! Now that my friends is what a Mack was built to do :thumb: 80K rears, triple chassis = 1 tough truck! I also agree I LOVE the "down under" Macks, they have a look that is second to none :thumb: I have a thing for steel nose RD's (flintstones) I've owned a few...you dont see them much in the states anymore

  10. 2 ton hoist will work fine, dont forget the 2 bolts inside the side cover :thumb: Are there metal shavings on the magnetic plugs? Before you pull it all apart I would check for shavings, loose yokes in the jack and main shafts, bad U-joints etc. How many miles did you put on it with the power divider locked?

  11. Well seeing as to how ya done got that blade on the front with nothing to do yet, run it on down here to texas and help me push somma these trees over and scoot somma this brush upina big pile so we can burn it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,randypee :SMOKIE-LFT::banana::P

Coming thru Texas in a few weeks via I-40 have that brush, some pulled pork BBQ and an RC pop ready...we'll get that brush pile a burnin! :rmod_dump::SMOKIE-RT:
