  1. hey,

I have a b85f fire truck that I am parting out, maybe someone might need some firetruck stuff that I won't be using on my truck. The pump is still intact and It would pump before I removed the engine. Lots of other odds and ends. let me know if you need anything. The truck is inside out of the weather.

    Thanks

    Fred

  2. Hi Fred,

I'm looking for a windshield wiper control for vacuum wipers in a '58 B95.  Do you have anything like that?

    Pat Sullivan

    Hi,

sorry but my truck had air wipers.

    Thanks

    Fred

  3. Hi,

drove the old b61 around and put a trailer on it, The truck has a 673 N/A and the engine runs good but, not much power and hardly any smoke. I might have a injection problem. has anyone turned the pump up on these? I would like to try and see what happens.

  4. This truck has the 707 gas engine, also has 6.14 rear gear ratio, You are right that not too many diesels have 5 speeds with the thermodyne engines. Unless you are going to pull totally maxed out loads, I think it will work ok. This trans has no overdrive, this will have closer gear ratios that say the maxi torque trans that was with the maxidyne engines, I could get the ratios for this trans for comparison.

  5. what engine does it have fred? is it used in HD or off road use

Most of the B models I have seen that had Diesel engines came with 10 or more gears

I know some fire truck B models had 5 speeds but they were gas jobbers

  7.  a few years back if I would have had to make a choice, I probably would have went with the drag car, but now I would definitly choose the big trucks!! ( even though they cost more than my hot rods ever did)  Doug

yep doug I did the drag car thing too once.... drag cars then, street classic cars, then 4x4 trucks, then restorations, then old tractors now old macks... whats next, bulldozers????? :mack1:

  8. :thumb:

I guess 22.5's will work the originals were 20" & 22",  some will want them in 24.5 though. 22.5's will work better for me as I have plenty of take off tires, I usually replace them while they still have a little tread to use for spares! I have 24.5's on my KW,but severe lack of road worthy tiresLOL! oh well I have a set of diffs with higher gears I can put in the KW ( 3:70's) it has 4:33's now) any way I have my fingers crossed! Thanks, Doug

Has anyone figured out a price on these yet? or maybe a guess? what does a normal new alcoa rim cost?

    Fred :SMOKIE-LFT:

  9. No, I know nothing of the previous owner.  The background in the Ebay photos seemed familar but I couldn't put an exact location on them.

The last B model I know of selling off a dealers lot here was the last one, or nearly the last one General Cartage had, a B-61 tandem with a 673 and Duplex and still in dark green paint. It was sold in about 1977 by the local GMC dealer, H.A. Kuhle Co.  My wife's cousin bought it for $2500, painted it black and put it under a lowboy to haul his Cat crawlers.  I think he still has it.

It is good to hear you had a good Ebay experience.  I've bought and sold items there for the past 3 or 4 years.  As you probably know the sellers and buyers with good feed back are OK, its the ones with multiple bad feed back hits you have to be wary of.

Grassy center back roads......reminds me of my father and I when he bought used farm equipment  back in the '60s.  The old '49 Ford F6 was always overloaded (license) and I got to know the back roads around here pretty well.  Had to steer clear of the old iron bridges....

    Hi,

Where I got the truck was about a block off of the main hiway that went in front of the firestone plant ( kinda looked like it was shut down ) the street was directly across from the main entrance on a dead end street, the guy I got it from had a freight terminal there that looked like he auctioned off everything, He didnt look to old, and he said he had more interrest in his drag car than the truck.

    Fred here,

Thats my truck, the engine is gone now, I have tried to change my ad on that site but I am not doing somthing right. I have not got the pictures yet but I have not forgot about you. I will try tonight, I will try to post them here, like I said if you need the stuff I am not going to use you can have it, maybe some trading or something.

    Thanks fred

  11. Go to the liberiary and get a "Motor's or Chiltons" truck manual from 60s-early 70s will have the info you need. There was about 6-7 different gas engines, and none were V6 all inline.

go to the links section in this site, should be a link for the b-model registry, click that and that site has downloadable pdf file that has all the specs. on the engines, bore, stroke horse power, also tells what truck they were in and all the info on the trans and ratios, wiring diagrams, cab specs front axles and about anythink you will want.

  12. By the way my RPM guage isnt working , so i try to go by noise and feal

this is is the way I do it if I use the clutch at all,

I will try to put it a step by step

1, you want to down shift, as you let up on the throtle push the clutch in about half way, and kinda snap the gear shift into nutral, In time you can do this with out the clutch, DO NOT PUSH CLUTCH TO FLOOR!, why? some trucks have thing called a clutch brake, Its there to stop the transmission gears from turning I will get to that later. on to step 2

2, You are in neutral, let the clutch up, this will spin the gears in the trans to the same rpm as the engine.

3, raise the rpm up to lets say 1600 rpm and try to slip the gear shift into 4th, You will feel it grind a little you can hold it there right when it starts to engauge the gear, and the gear shift will kinda bounce a little in your hand, or it might go right in,

4, kind play with the throttle some, raise the rpm up some and it should scratch a little and then go in.

some guys will put the clutch all the way to the floor between step 3 and 4. this is a double clutch technique, this uses the clutch brake to slow the trans gears down so it will go in. I never had it work for me, maybe I dont do it right.

let me know how you come out

    Fred

  13. are you useing the clutch? or are you downshifting "by feel"?

The 5 speeds have a big rpm drop between gears, You would have to snap it out of gear as soon as you let off of the gas and then get the rpm up quite a bit so it will go in to the next lower gear. I sometimes use the clutch to get the trans out of gear, slowly increse the rpm and float it in to gear without the clutch. It will go in when the rpm is right, It also has a lot to do with how much slop is in the drive line.

  14. Was it the one listed on Ebay sometime back, in Decatur?  I live near there, about about fell over when I saw it as being in Decatur.  Not many Bs around this neck of the woods anymore.

    Yep, thats the one.

I had been looking for one close to home for a long time. I was very learry of buying a truck off of ebay, but all in all I believe I got a good one. I got to drive down alot of roads with the grass growing down the middle to get home. About 150 miles of Illinois and Indiana back roads. You wouldn't know anyting about the previous owners?

    Fred :SMOKIE-LFT:

  15. Fred,

Was this guy Richard Wilbur, He had an old B75 Firetruck and replaced his 464 with a 673 Diesel. I lost his contact info if you have it that would be great.

    Firemack

no, this guys name is paul helms, he has a b60, I think thats what it is. does it have to be that engine or will another cid mack engine work?

    fred

  16. Hi Fred,

My 464 spun #2 rod and the crank needs to be turned down to .30 and mains to .10-.20,  recondition all of the rods and to top that off,  I have .25 runout on the cylinder walls so need to bore it out sleeve and replace the pistons, adding up all that work and parts it makes more sense to look for a replacement block or parts block to get 1 good engine, since I can't find a new set of pistons.

Since your truck has the pump panel it may have the same same chrome panel , mine has 2 gauages and the tach on the chrome pump panel. it is about 12" X 18" so if yours is standard it should be the same one, if yours had the optional gauges it won't work, but I may use some of the gauages as replacement parts. Does your truck still have the booster reels and any other chrome hardware left? I will try to take a digital picture and post it for you. Where are you located?

    Thanks,

    Firemack

tell you what I will do, I will post a couple of pictures of whats left and you can see if anything is there you want, most of the stuff you are asking for is long gone, although I did buy the truck from the hptowing guy, first name steve. He my know where that stuff went to. Good news on your engine, I was talking to a guy at a tractor show friday and he said that he pulled a motor out his mack back in the day and replaced it with a 673 diesel, he said it was about 450 cid, and it ran ok when pulled out. I will get on that for you, It still might be sitting in the corner of his shop or something. I am located in South west indiana.

  17. How many of you would be interested in purchasing some new 5 hole Alcoa's if they were available? I got on the Alcoa web site and e-mailed the person in charge of marketing for the commercial wheel division, and asked them if there were enough of a demand would they consider a limited production run of 20" & 22" 5 hole wheels, also the possability of tooling up some 5 hole wheels in 22.5" & 24.5" tubeless to get the traditional look with the benefits of modern radial tires. I know that there has got to be more people out there than just me that would want them. If they see how big a demand there is they just might do it, I am sure that they could sell alot of them to owners of newer trucks also think they would look good on some of the newer trucks, just need to find a way to convince them!! Doug ;)

Hey, sign me up for the payments! I would want the 22.5 or 24.5 rims, also I think that the newer tubeless type rims would make more sense. They would look like the originals for "us" and could be a new cool wheel for the guys making a living with their truck too. Plus anything to make my truck ride and drive better (radial tires) would be great!

    Good Idea!

  18. Hi Fred,

I am looking for the chrome rails and some of the pump panel parts are they in good shape?

    Thanks,

    Firemack

1954 B75 Fire truck at Radnor Fire Co.

See it on the old board as i haven't had time to move them to the new one yet!

    Hi fireamack

the firebody has been cut off right behind the pump, so no rails, but some of the panel stuff is there, if you could decribe to me what you need It might be there.

Whats wrong with your engine that you are looking for another? also thanks for the ebay axle spot, I have been looking at that one but I dont have anyone in that area the could hold it for me untill I could get to it. I have to work to support my mack hobby, HAHA.

    Let me know

    Fred :mack1:

  20. Hi,

A few people have asked about the unusal "payload" on my trailer in some my pictures of my truck. When I got my truck it was a big day for me and everyone else around, mainly thats all I talked about for weeks. My best friends dad had been a truck driver all his life and was more than happy to tell you good truck driving story, while enjoying a cold beer. I asked him if He would show me how to shift the trans. and he did. After that was all done he joking told his son and me that he wanted to be hauled to the cemetary on" that old mack truck" when it was time. Well we didn't think much about it at the time and of course I agreed. I never realy thought too much about it after that day.

I got word from my good friend that his dad had passed away, and that when making arangements that I needed to get ready. Ready for what I asked, he I nformed me that his dad had In with his will writen down what he wanted at his funeral. No suit, no tie, and haul me with "that old mack". So a group of friends and myself cleaned everything up, put a hitch on the truck for the trailer. Worked on the truck all night.

Everything went as planed and went without a problem. Everyone that knew Jerry thought that was exactly what he wanted.

So. thats the story, I was, and still am, very proud to give a old trucker the last ride home.

    LITITZ, PENNSYLVANIA

16th Annual All Mack Truck Show

Gerharts in Lititz. Info: (717) 626-8544 or write P.O. Box 405, Lititz, PA 17543

Hey guys, thanks for the info!!, put in for vaction and it has been approved so I will be there. As for the Mack, well not this time, going from Indiana to Pa might be a little to much for it right now, It needs alot more work, has a terrible viberation at 45-55. I would say the driveshaft would fall out before I got out of the county LOL.

    Thanks

    Fred :SMOKIE-LFT:

  22. Hi Fred

I will ask around as I am friends with some people that work in the big name companys out here ie Greco, Palumbo, Lindahl

the name sounds fimmilar so you might be in luck.

I bought 2 Chicago B models one was a Reliable wrecking Co and the other was a Cellie trucking. both had many of rough miles on them so I can feel you pain as to the condition yours is in...LOL

    Trent :MackLogo:

Thanks for the vote of confidence Trent, I think my truck has been fixed up once and is needing it again, the doors and fenders are rust free, but the cab sure wasn't. It must have escaped the windy city at some time, I bought it in Decatur IL. Thanks

    Fred
