  1. Hi,

I have got my new prize home and started scrapeing off the greese and crud and finding numbers on the engine, trans, and axles. The engine is a NH220L cummins, the trans is a 15 speed triplex, the front axle is a 9500# with no brakes, any ways the rear tandem is not Mack it is a timken worm drive with power divider, 7.45 : 1 ratio, Is this factory?? it looks like it belongs there and also it needs some work on the bushings and rods that center it in the truck, where do you get such parts?? I never seen a old mack with anyting other than a mack rear. I have sent in to the museum for the info but that will take some time to here back from them. the truck was from montana, It has a jake brake and a exhaust brake, Let me know what you think

  2. hey packer,

Made it home all right from my great western trip, only had to cross the scales twice, something like 32,000 on the rear tandem on the trailer, anyway, I got a two speed rear axle out of a school bus, dayton hubs and all, so, what you need to do is get that other b73 and put it on the trailer and drive on out east...........

  3. Hi

I have posted more on this board than the on the last. At first I had lots of problems with logging in, but that has not been a problem for a long time. I have to say a first I hated it, but in retrospect it has been a change for the better. I like the Avitar on the side, I can tell who is who very easily now.

  4. Hi,

Where can you get a good Mack hat now days? My local dealer quit stocking the classic mack hats, black or red cap with a swen on patch. I have found some of those floppy kind that seems to be what is in style, but I dont like them. Any one here know where to get them? let me know if you do.

  5. Hi,

Hey barry, Thats the kind of cars that were new when I started working at the Ford dealer that I still work at. I remeber that Ford recalled all the 3.8 engines in the taurus and sable cars. I got where I could change the head gaskets on them things in about 6 hours, and when you got that one done there was two or three waiting. I haven't seen a wagon for a while though. The timing covers were another recall also. I always liked those cars, not too bad to work on. compared to todays fords. The taurus is the car that brought ford back from the brink back in 86. There's a little old lady that brings one in every so often that is like a new car. I think is a 88 or 89 model.

  8. That is much thiner than the one on my b 73 when compaired to each other, Do you think that it has been worn off over the years? I am a mechanic and I get into my truck with dirt and grime all over my hands all the time and I was looking at the steering wheel in my truck and compared to truck of the same year it is a lot smoother and thinner. just a thought

Comments: About christmas I bought a parts truck from steve at highpoint towing, It was an old firetruck and what I needed was the cab.

I talked to steve and price was set, and I sent him the money, I got a guy to come a get the truck and he even helped get the old truck on the trailer. He even let the driver that picked up the truck sleep in the office from what I was told.

The truck was just as he told me, the price was very fair, I would say everything turned out as good as it could.

    Thanks steve!!

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.  I figured that the C and 711 would be more or less the same externally just couldn't be sure as I was only working off pics of mounted engines and hadn't seen one in the flesh for a while.  I think you're right about the trans in respect of the lower gearing on the RR, she used to be a yard truck and still has a rather meaty hitch welded to the end of the chassis, looks set up to pull a trailer on a dolly, maybe for carting 2nd or 3rd trailers to a road train assembly area (still working on her history).  This'll be coming off in good time, it's not the best of jobs in all honesty!

In terms of the air cleaner, she still sucks her air through the external barrell.  This is piped to the cleaner under the hood which lies on its side.  I'm not happy with this arrangement as it bounces around something chronic when we're moving.  Also, by moving the cleaner proper to where it should be I have one less hose/pipe under the hood.  Keep it simple and less cluttered!

Thanks again, appreciate your advice to a rookie and always enjoy the various pics of your stuff.  Hope the family is well.

    Cheers

    Andy  :mack1:

    Hi,

My b61 is the same way, it started out with the 711 and now has a 673 in it, from what I was told the 711 blew head gaskets. A mack mechanic from back in the day said the 711 ment that you drove them for 7 days and worked on them for 11. I dont know for sure but mine has been changed at least once.

  11. Hi Mike

I was going to try that but there is almost no room to get up in there. But I just need to get under it and try harder. As for the G model. It is there looking for a new home. I just don't have the room to store it. Let me know if you or anyone else may be interested. What about that steering wheel? Have you seen them like that? I should post an interior pic.

    Dan

thats a good looking truck, I just bought a b73 and It has a tahograph ( or what ever it is) in it, what is this thing used for? Its a b73 1960 model. It has a 220 cummins, you say that that box in the middle of the dash is there from the factory? I have sent in to the meusem for info on my truck. I am curious. Was the power steering very popular in the b73? I would think that big of a truck would steer pretty hard.

  12. Just brought home a 1943 Dodge 1 ton fire truck.

Seems that in the many years of, and differant owners, there is about three coats of paint on all the chrome goodies!

Starts out as O. D. and ends up as a very faded red.

I'm looking for a gentle way to remove the paint without scratching the chrome.

Any words of wisdome out there?

    Thanks,

    Packer

    Hi,

I see that you just couldn't pass up the fire truck! I am planing on going out your way 2 week in september, are you going to be home? anyway I have used zip strip on that stuff before and worked great, the chrome is hard enough that it wont etch and the paint just curls right off, you might have to use a plastic scraper and reapply some more stripper to get the rest off.

    Fred

  13. correct me if im wrong ...to add piston coolers to the END673 you could "simply" tap into the oil gally??? I heard that from someone that added a turbo to there non turbo 673

    trent

    charlie,

does your truck have a vacuum brake booster? vacuum wipers? and that vacuum cylinder that turns on the big waterpump on the fire aperatius? other than that the motors should be close to the same as the 707, I still have all those mounts on my firetruck and the ones on the frame to mount the trans. If you need that stuff call me.

  14. I finnialy got back working on the B model tonight and I am having a fitment issue with the doors.  It seams as if the top lines up the bottom wont and vice versa. If I center it then it interfears with the cowl aera between the door and cab. When I move it back the door wont shut as the inside of the door rubbs the cab wall (striker plate wall)

one thing i was thinking is the hindges are installed incorrect? is there a specific way to install hindges?? right now the upper hindges have the "notch" removed to help guide the door on to the hindge

    any help is thankfull

    trent

I could take a picture of my door hinges would that help?

  15. Stop in some afternoon and we'll go look around!  I need to get more photos anyway...

The best yard around is Gerharts in Lititz, PA...don't miss the truck show Oct 1st...you can walk all around the junk yard.  There are trucks and heavy equipment there.

I just about cant wait! 2 months and counting down for lititz show. How many of you are going. I would like to meet some of the the people that I "talk" to on here and on the phone. I didnt even know of the junkyard... wow! is this like "mackstock" or what?

    Fred :SMOKIE-LFT:

  16. :) hey all, I got home from the hospital yesterday from back surgery the doc says it was a  complete sucsess, so I should be up and around pretty soon. tried to get as much work done on the trucks as I could before I went in as I wont be able to do much for a while! at least I can keep up with everything going on with the board :thumb:  Doug

Great news! I'm gald you are all ok now. When I had back trouble I couldn't do anything. You will have to put air ride on all those trucks of yours now!! lots eaiser on the tail bone.

    Fred :SMOKIE-LFT:

  17. I agree larry

when you flow more fuel you dont always make more power, other things like timing, injector size, more air are all needed to safely make the HP. but its always fun to do a smoke show :thumb:

    Trent

Yea, thats what I thought, why screw with a good thing. The engine runs good the way it is and its only 170 hp. I guess thats why we have the 15 and 20 speed transmissions for! I am going to check all my pump settings though.
