  1. I am about ready to sell my truck. I received a letter earlier in September from the DOT asking me to schedule my initial DOT audit. I called the number several times and was finally able to talk to a person. I explained my operation (if you want to call it that) and that I am not for hire nor do I plan to be. I explained this is a hobby and I am planning to take my truck to shows and also plan to purchase a trailer to haul my tractors to shows. The DOT person agreed I was "not a motor carrier" but I still need to have all the "items" in order. The DOT person said I needed this if I ever get stopped for a road side inspection. I suggested "maybe you could issue a letter" explaining that I am exempt. The DOT person agreed with me but I could "feel" the "it will be a cold day in Hxxx" over the phone. The DOT person said they would "run it up the flag pole" and get back to me. That was over a week ago.

This DOT stuff is a bunch of crap. I am required to have an employment application, a random drug test program, and my name plastered on the side of the truck. I understand the importance of operating and maintianing the truck for safe operation but is all this other stuff necessary for a private individual? It appears the DOT does not understand there are persons that do this for a hobby. :(

    Sorry for the rant.

  2. I thought SCR/DPF was mandatory to meet 2010 EPA regs. Maybee 2009's were just mandatory DPF. B)

You do not need SCR until January 1, 2010. Any engine built before that date only needs a DPF. The truck manufacturers are offering both before 2010 but you must pay the ~$8K premium (varies by company) for an SCR engine.

  3. Hi,

just want to know with the serial number if anybody can help me to find if this truck was a Magnum.. it's a MH-613 1M2AR33Y5EM006354 .. if anyone know where i can find one please contact me!!

My suggestion is to call your Mack dealer or contact the Mack Museum. Good luck!

  4. I worked my 24 hour shift on Sunday and had to work a 10 on Monday due to a call off. We moved the 700 pounder Monday and our stupid dispatch said that only 2 ambulances could go because of call volume. I argued my best as a lieutenant but they said no. So I told them that my rig would be on the air mobile and I went anyways. I had to help the crew and bonehead dispatch was none the wiser. We have been interviewing new people and the boo-boo bus company is about to double in size in my area. Thanks for the offer Rob but I will be able to keep Faith at the new place just outside. I am working on the plan for a shelter frame made of 3/4" PVC pipe. I want to keep it cheap and durable. Have had ZERO time to work on anything let alone pack stuff. We did get to paint the ceiling in two of the rooms at the new place and I replaced the breaker box. The damn thing had only a few spaces and they were all taken. We needed to add for the oven and had no other choice.

Greg - sorry to hear about your misfortune. I hope things work out for the best. Let me know if I can be of help. I too am short of free time. Brewster is not too far from me but in the other direction.

  5. Thanks Greg for the hospitality on Saturday. The A is a nice looking truck. I can tell Greg's priorities, the cars sit outside and the Mack sits inside the garage. Next time I will call ahead and maybe Rob will send some grilled possum. Is possum the "other" white meat? I bet you need a lot of "sauce".

  6. I heard a story about no fuel gauge on Roadway trucks. The trucks ran from terminal to terminal and did not refuel in between. There was enough fuel to get the truck to the next terminal where it was refueled. So there was no need for a fuel gauge. They used air starters to eliminate batteries to save weight and additional maintenance. They also ran a small oil line from the engine to the fuel tank and burned the used oil. They only topped off the oil and changed the filters thus eliminating oil changes. Roadway trucks were all business with no frills.

  7. Sorry Farmer but I once again am unable to attend the show this year. We are going to work around the house this weekend. If you are out and want to drop in and see us feel free to.

    Greg,

Sorry to hear you will not be at Dover. I plan to be there bright and early Saturday morning and hope to be out by noon. I need to get "big blue" ready for the Watts show so I will be in your neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. If I have a few minutes I will try to stop by and say hello. Sunday the wife wants to go to the craft show in Columbiana. Too many things on my "to do" list and so little time. Take care!

  8. I live in OH and just renewed my CDL in July. The BMV did not ask to see my medical card. It is interesting to learn how different each state is when it involves something that is to be commonized. Just like going through airport security, each airport is different.

  9. There is a tractor/steam engine show at the Tuscarawas County fairgrounds in Dover, Ohio on August 14, 15 ,16. Sorry about the short notice on this. I am planning on being there again. I have been trying to get more old iron there as the name of the organization is the Tuscarawas County Pioneer Power Association. There have been some older trucks there and the tractor guys love it. They have some on site camping ( I usually camp ) and other stuff in town. It is a nice small show. I will post pics if I attend.

    Greg,

Yes, the Dover show is one of the nicer shows in my opinion. I am planning to attend on Saturday morning (not bringing my MH). Will you have your truck? Let me know where you will be and I will plan to stop by and introduce myself. Are you planning to go to the Watts show the following Saturday?

  10. Getting closer! 16 days until the show and things are falling in place!

Hope to see everyone here, but we need to have more registrations so I'm sure to have enough dash plaques! :D

    Barry,

I am still planning to attend and still have a lot of things I want to do before hand. I think I registered. I will need to get a trip permit and fuel sticker and USDOT number installed so I am legal. :thumb: Is there a truck wash close to you just in case?

  11. I read about the racing oils and I don't really want to run a thicker oil. I did a little more research and there are a few more addititves claiming to have the needed ZDDP. I don't know if it is "enough" but in this situation I guess more is better. Granted my flat-head has less than 9000 miles on it and premature wear is not a real big issue, but still is an issue. I have always run Castrol in everything but our Monte Carlo SS, it gets Mobil 1. I thought about putting one qt. of break-in oil in with my regular changes. She holds 9 qts. so I thought about 8 plus 1 break-in. Haven't done it yet as I am still leaning toward the additives.

I am on vacation/holiday until next week. I will ask our "experts" what they recommend. BTW, the racing oils I speak of are something like 10 weight so they are anything but thick. Of course they only need to last 1/4 mile or 500 miles.

  12. Greg,

You are correct about ZDDP. I work in the industry (20 years) and have seen the changes in engine oils. However all of my experience is with Diesel engine oils and driveline lubricants. The current CJ-4 oil does have lower ZDDP. All the field tests I have seen, run, and am currently running show lower internal engine wear with CJ-4 compared to previous oils. Part of any oil approval process involves an engine lab test with slider followers and it must pass the wear specification set by the OEMs. This is so the oil is "backwards" compatible for older engines. So while I understand your concern, you should not have any concerns with CJ-4 oil in older Diesel engines. There are still some CI-4+ oils (high ZDDP) on the market but are being supplied only in drum quantities. As I stated, I am not familiar with gasoline oils (S classification) but I think "racing" oils have higher ZDDP. My company has worked with several racing teams to develop a gasoline oil specifically for their application. Before you all start thinking "free" oil, my company does not sponsor any teams.

  13. Ventilation air is not blowing from the RH center and RH vents in the VENT or A/C position. Air is blowing from the LH center and LH vents. In the DEFROST position there is air coming out the defroster vents on both the RH and LH sides. I have a HVAC book but it does not explain this issue. Are there separate vent tubes for the LH and RH sides? Do I need to remove the computer under the dash and circuit breaker panel to get access? I had the computer cover and dash panels off but cannot see where they connect. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks!
