  1. I recently bought a 1926 Mack AC,I want to change the oil in the 4 cyl gas engine. The engine is not filtered. The question is do I use a non detergent oil or do I use a detergent oil?A few guys tell me a detergent oil in a old engine will cause problems, and some say go with the non detergent oil thats what was use back than. Also should I go with a multigrad oil or a 30weight?

    Thanks AL

  2. The Superliner in St Louis did not go to AZ,I bought the truck before Christmas,I drove it home ,the pump problem was a real easy fix shut off cable was stuck. The truck ran like a new truck, super nice shape the inside was like new.no holes on the dash everything worked like new.The price was real right for the truck was under priced, the guy mad a few bucks but I feel like I got a great deal,he was happy and so was I.

  3. Ok I have a 1989 Superliner, its on neway airride. The truck started to have a real bad front end hop.I dont feel it in the wheel or in the seat, but at about 50 you can see the front of the truck hopping real bad, when bobtailing,it seems to go away at about 68 mph,but is still there not as bad.If I put a empty or loaded trailer under it,it is not as bad but still there.I took the truck to Tulsa auto spring, they have been around for years and I have had good luck with them before. They told me the rear tires were out of balance real bad, they need 40 oz.They balaned the tires and it was alittle better.I went out and bought 8 new Yokohoma rear tires and had them balanced, still hopping.Tulsa auto spring than put a stright edge on the front tires and told me one of the tires was out of round, put 2 new steering tires on it,still hopping.I have replaced the u joints, all new shocks, kingpins, still hopping. The truck spent 2 days at Tulsa auto spring and they keep saying its a tire balancing problem. They balance them on the truck and the tires only take 2 to 4 oz,still hopping? They found a bad u bolt so I had them all replaced, still hopping any suggestions??? I thought it might be the front spring hangers, but they tell me that they are fine.

    Thanks AL

  5. I have a 1989 Superliner,I have had the truck about 8 years. The truck is on neway airride,I use it everyday, pulling a flatbed run about 55,000 miles local a year, loaded one way come back empty.Anyway double frame, right at the end of the 5th wheel plate at the rear, the inside frame has a crack,it is on the top side of the rail. The crack is only on the drivers side, leave it alone?am I asking for problems?I took it to a frame shop in Tulsa and I have used these guys before and think they are real good and know there stuff, they told me leave it alone.as long as its double frame I will be ok,no need to get into alot of money and time.

    Thanks AL

  7. Here's the deal I had a wheel seal replaced on my 1989 Mack Superliner, right front drive axle. The shop that did the work was about 200 miles from the house.I get the truck home and look and oil is pouring out.I take the truck to my local shop, they pull it apart, for some reason the shop that did the seal put white lub on the spindal.Ok I have the seal replaced, new CR seal, drive it about 25 miles, oil pouring out.I take the truck back, they replace the seal, new stemco seal, drive the truck 25 mile, guess what oil pouring out.I take the truck back, replace the seal with a new national seal, here we go again 25 mile oil pouring out.I go back they replace it with a new national seal,I get about 3,500 miles look at it today and oil is pouring out. They have checked the hub 3 times it is ok,also checked the axle spindal, races and all bearings all ok.Called Mack and they told me CR has a wide seal and this will slove the problem??I have never had a problem with this truck in years, seem like since the seal with the white lub I can't keep a seal in the truck. The seal numbers have been checked and rechecked by 2 different Mack dealers.Anybody ever have this problem??could it be a bad run of seals??Also replaced the air vents on the topof the axle.

    Thanks AL

  8. That Mack is in Phoenix AZ,its is still being used as a matter of fact they have two of them. The trucks are owned by Mid-States trucking.I was out ther a few years back,I bought some B 53 Macks from them and they were getting the two big Macks ready for a job hauling a load to someplace in KS.

  9. Glad you enjoyed the show, Rob! It was great to meet you and we really appreciated all your help. Everyone seemed to have a good time despite the heat, and I really enjoyed sitting around the shop with all the guys talking trucks and telling stories in the evenings. We received several calls and emails saying they are looking forward to next year and so are we. For those of you who have never met Rob, he's a stand up guy and also very handy to have around - from setting up tables to mechanical repairs on our gator. Every show should be so lucky to have a "Rob" around.

  11. Can anyone help me,I am restoring a 88 Superliner I am going from a single exhaust to a duel exhaust, the exhaust is not cab mounted,it is mounted to the steel uprights,air-ride cab.I am needing a VIN number from a daycab Superliner or at least the last 6 digits so I can order the exhaust elbows,my dealer says they can't help me unless I have a vin from a twin stack day cab air-ride cab.Any help would be great.

  12. I have a 1989 Superliner the truck was a singal exhaust tractor.I am making this truck a duel exhaust set-up,I have got the steel stand brackets, for both sides.I have mounted the exhaust brackets, instaled both left and right mufflers and gaurds. To me it looks like the mufflers sit high, but looking at alot of Superliner photos and Mack sales books that I have they are right,I also had a 1985 and a 1990 Superliner so I know they are mounted right. Can anyone tell me, it looks like Mack uses a 90 degree elbow comming out of the mufflers.Does this run under the cab,or do they use a Y-pipe behind the cab?The way I have it now is there is a Y-pipe under the cab.I have to order the 90 degree elbows, it just seem to me that the elbow would have to be very long to get down to the top of the frame to match up with the Y pipe.Any help or any pics of this set-up would help.

    Thanks AL

  13. I have a 1959 Mack B81 with an END 673. Pulled out the dipstick today to check the oil and found antifreeze. I pulled off the valve cover and definitely have water in the oil. According to the Mack service manual, it could be one of several things. (1) Defective oil cooler core (2) defective water pump oil seal (3) blown head gasket. I've always assumed water in oil was a blown head gasket. Any advice? There is no additional guidance in the service manual to determine which of these three things it might be. I hate to pull the heads off if its an oil cooler core - anyone have an idea to figure out which of these it might be?

    Thanks,

    Al

  14. Can anyone tell me what the ride hight should be for a Neway ARD 238 airride,it is in a 1989 Superliner,I have been to Neway web site, but they don't list the ARD 238,it has been replaced with ad-246-8.This set up looks close but it does, seem to have some changes,if anyone can tell me the hight from the top,of the axle to bottom of frame, would help alot.

  15. I had a 2005 Kenwoth W-900 475 cat, stuido sleeper, real nice truck, sold it with 30,000 miles on it,junk.4.5 mpg, water leaks, wind noise.6,000 miles on it,cat had to replace the heads,13,000 miles turbo, front engine cover leaking. It seems like I was in a rental truck more then it the KW.I sold it with only 30,000 miles on it.So I go and buy a 2005 Peterbilt,475 cat,63'' flat top, junk, just as many problem with this one as with the KW,sold this one with 40,000 mile on it.Ok so I go for a 3rd time buy a new 2006 Western Star,Detroit diesel 515 hp,not a bad truck.5.5 mpg, rode good, not to many problems,I like this truck, still it was missing something. So I sold it 85,000 miles on it.I bought a 1988 Peterbilt,425 cat,1,050,000 mile on it,I have not had any problems with it.I have put 70,000 miles on it 6.5 mpg,no problems.I am also getting ready to start running my 1988 Superliner,E-9 V-8 450,240"WB,just came back from Double Eagle had a new 42" sleeper made for it,they also did the cab interior. After Double Eagle, the truck went to 4 States,in Joplin MO for pimpin'.I go the truck for the 2nd owner 450,000 miles on,never been out of Texas,I will switch off between my old Peterbilt and the Superliner,I have less money in two trucks then one new junk truck.I get better mpg, power and am alot happier driving the old trucks. Also if one of my older trucks need to go into a shop I can fix the old trucks on my own and save 100.00 per hour labor, and still have a extra truck to run and keep the money coming in.It seem funny anymore how guys are trying to make there new trucks look like old trucks.

  16. Can anybody tell if the Superliner ever came with a air ride cab,if it came from the factory with a sleeper on it.If if did were was the exhust mounted? From what I have been able to find out is that a day cab came with the exhust mounted to the cab,but I can seem to find out were it was mounted if it had a sleeper.I am having a sleeper built, from Double Eagle and there are running into a exhust problem.

    Thanks AL
