After doing some reading on this site, I've realized that the 285 and 300+ are near identical to the untrained eye. What I'm asking is how do I know which one I've got? I have looked everywhere up around the timing cover to find a stamp saying ENDT676. I haven't found it and this engine is missing it's tag. I'm running this in front of a quadruplex, so I'm under the impression that the 300+ would be more appropriate for that transmission. Anyways, is there anything that would be obviously different between the two? I read somewhere on here about the 300+ having water lines running to the intercooler? I provided a picture just for reference.

Yup, that's exactly where it sat when I first saw it. It hadn't ran in years and when we went for a look we were supposed to try and get it running there. By the time we got there, the last owner had thrown some new batteries in and it was already running when Dad and I got there! It must have wanted to come home with me! -

I love that Autocar. If I didn't have a Mack, I'd be going after one of those. I'll keep a close eye on here for when you come across them. Are they still having truck shows pretty regularly in STL? -

Wow! That's too cool. I would love to see any pictures you might be able to dig up! I always love finding out a little history and hearing stories of these old trucks, especially when this one is now mine. It would absolutely make my day to see some old photos. Interestingly enough it still has a plaque on the dash from one of those truck shows in STL. -

terry, the fill plug is the area where it says MACK Tetrapoid Gears? That's just where I'd assume it is. I'm not seeing anything there, even on this trans. -

Can one of you more educated in the ways of quadruplex tell me where in the heck the "TRQ-????" marking is at on the transmission? I spent more than enough time this morning laying on the ground in 6* weather looking for it with no luck. I simply just want to know which of the six quadboxes I've got. -

You'd really think I scored if you knew how much I snagged this puppy for...lets just say it wasn't much. -

A little before and after. Starting to cool down here in central IL, going to try and get the cab painted before the weather really turns! -

I've had to climb under and pry a few times since I've had it. I believe there's a fix that involves welding the stick up on the bottom where it gets worn after years of use and grinding it back to size. If it becomes a regular problem, I'll fix it. -

Got it! My plan is to work this truck when I can. Just bought a spray gun over the weekend and already have half the bed and frame painted, as well as half of the tires changed to newer used ones donated by my friend who works at a Love's Truck Stop. It's taken me longer than I hoped, but doesn't every project? I'm not going for a restoration, just working towards having something presentable if I want to attract a customer base. I'll post some pictures from my cell phone later on tonight. -

So what RPM is to be considered lugging on a 676? What kind of powerband do I need to keep this thing in? -

Here's a litte video of the truck for all those interested. Making some headway here and there, working on painting the bed currently. Pics to come. -

Sorry y'all I've been away on other adventures for the past two weeks. Did buy some tires for the ol' Mack and hope to have her rolling down the road real soon. It's for sure the quadruplex like the one above. It got stuck between gears when getting sloppy on shifting. It'd rather you follow the pattern of straight lines rather than diagonally jumping across the gates or using a circular motion to go from low to direct. I got her figured out though. Gonna try and find a big filter for the tip fan, fitting one under the hood is a different story. -

Also, I typed the Mack P/N into google from the injection pump and came up with an ENDT676, which would be the 285hp Maxidyne 300. I read that in 1980 the name was changed to EM6-285. I'm guessing that means I've got a pre-1985 285hp Maxidyne because this engine still retains the turbine? I'm not well educated on these things like you guys, but I am here to learn so lay it on. I also cannot find any sort of stamping that would say "ENDT or T676" anywhere on top of the timing cover. -

Here's a better picture of the front axle and the power steering fluid reservoir. This one's been converted to power steering. -

That's pretty much what I figured. This truck has got plenty of logged hauls that were left in the glove box dated 1998-2001. -

I went ahead and took some pictures of the engine for you guys today. I know casting numbers don't say a lot, but there were no engine identification tags on this engine. I was looking for tags behind the injection pump but the block is bare. Can't find any stamping marks like you would expect with a serial number. The E6 in our R model has tags and is very similar other than not having an air inter cooler, what I think is the block casting number was one letter off I think. All the photos I am posting are of the B61 and not the R. My pictures aren't great but they're better than nothing. On another note, what are you fellows referencing asking about 34s and 38's? Wheel Diameter? As for the front axle, I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them up for you to get a better look at. Thanks! - Colton -
Hi y'all, I just picked up an old B61 dump truck. I've been searching for a dump for awhile now and have been waiting for the right one to come up. My Dad and Grandpa ran a R model 300/ 10 speed for along time when I was a kid well into my teens as part of their heavy equipment company. We've still got it but it's been down for the last 5 years or so. I always loved the old bulldog, so I knew what brand I wanted. I usually have a tendency to like messing with older machines, old motorcycles, and old cars. It's kind of my thing and what I'm know by my friends for. As recently as last week my Dad was going through the local and surrounding area on Facebook marketplace looking for trucks and came across an ad for a 1960 Mack B61. He showed me the pictures and I was sold. We went down to Imperial, Mo near St. Louis to look the truck over. It hadn't been started in quite some time and we had fully expected having to do some work on the truck in order to get it running. We pulled in the drive where the truck and to our amazement the owner already had it running! It's got a Mack 300 engine, I think its an EM6, with the Quadruplex 20 Speed trans, and 4.66 rear end gear. Ended up getting what I think is a real good deal on a running driving truck. I'm pretty darn excited to learn how to drive this thing. I've been around heavy equipment my whole life, but this is my first truck, and at 23 I'd like to think I'm lively enough to keep up with shifting that 20 Speed. Any of you vets got any tips for a young guy in an old mack? Particularly on shifting when loaded vs unloaded. I've also figured out why some of you guys carry pry bars in the cab. I've had the shifter hang up in my 56 Chevy before getting stuck in between shift gates, so when the compound lever got jammed up from not squaring off the shift pattern I knew what to look for. Climbed under the truck and got her back in neutral. I've only had it home for a couple of days, but I'll throw some pictures up for you all to enjoy. Bringing it home on the lowboy through St. Louis
