Its been a slow process but I have replaced my EM6-285 with a E7-400. The E7-400 was a vmac and i converted it to full mechanical bosch P7100 type pump. Antrim built the pump and turned it up a bit and changed the governor springs so it will turn 21-2200 rpm instead of limited to the 1800. Also bought new injectors with an approximate 20% over nozzle. Upgraded turbo to the s475 style. My question is where to set the injection timing. I have it spill timed at right about 20°-20.5° advance the best i can tell. Does anyone know if i need more? Or less? Or sounds about right. Runs alot stronger than the em6 and makes around 35lbs of boost in a pull with a good load. I’m getting a bit of light colored smoke at idle and low rpm no load. Black to a gray haze in the throttle or heavy loaded. The black to gray looks normal to me the light i don’t know about. Water temps stay 170-180. Exhaust temps stay good. They will climb pretty quickly if you try to lug it hard loaded. Downshifting or backing off the go peddle drops the exhaust temps right back off. Hottest i have let it get is about 1000 or so for a second or two at a time. My main question is if my timing sounds right to everyone. Thank you Josh

Did you ever decide on a timing setting and how does it run? -
E7 v mac to mechanical
Macktruckman replied to lweyers's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
The early full mechanical E7-400 injection timing is 19° advance factory. The VMAC 400 is 6°. Im doing the same thing. EM6 finally laid down and I bought a 95 E7-400 VMAC and then a mechanical pump and had antrim build the pump and im in the process of getting it back together. I spill timed mine yesterday at 20°. Converting e7 400 back to mechanical

Thank you for the heads up. I was able to find a core mechanical E7 pump and its at antrim now getting new 400 plungers and barrels and complete work over to match a turbo and injectors they sold me. Now if I can find the injector lines and figure out how to pay for it all. Lol. josh -
Converting e7 400 back to mechanical
Macktruckman replied to SelfloaderMack's topic in Engine and Transmission
Well i made the switch to mechanical because I put the vmac 400 in an old 1978 R-685. So i didn’t have any of the electronics or the throttle pedal assembly and wiring harness. But it turned out to not be quite as simple as I had anticipated. I wound up having to do away with the econovance all together. I thought I would be able to leave it and use my old EM6-285 pump. But I wound up having to hunt down a full mechanical E7 pump and it’s currently at antrim diesel being rebuilt. By doing away with the econovance you also have to buy new injector lines because the injector pump will now bolt several inches foward directly into the back of the gear case. The lines can be purchased PAI makes them. Unfortunately they only want to sell them in packages of two lines per part number and package. So you have to two of each of the 6 lines you need. It’s stupid. You will wind up with 2 full sets of lines for double the price. Lol. I would sell my E7-400 VMAC injection pump and the econovance and injection lines. Was all running i just needed to switch to mechanical for use in the old truck. Josh -

Thank you heinz I called them and they do in fact offer the one for the early E7-400 as well. The cost plus a 1200 dollar core charge because I don’t have a core to send in. So I am still in search. Thank you again. Josh -

Well my old E6 pump wont work so if anyone has any leads on a full mechanical pump for a E7-400 id love to hear. Thank you josh -
Local outfit here has had one for several years that is a 10 wheel dump has a C-15 and an 8LL in it and it’s crammed in up under the windshield but if a C-15 fits I would assume about anything common will fit. There are places that make wiring harness for putting about any engine in any common truck. Is the end cost worth it? Only you can decide that. At any rate good luck.

Converting e7 400 back to mechanical

Another question i have about leaving the econovance in place is if I plug the oil line off to it how does it get oil to the bearings or bushings in the exonovance? Does it get oil through the pump itself? thanks josh -
Converting e7 400 back to mechanical
Macktruckman replied to SelfloaderMack's topic in Engine and Transmission
I haven’t set the timing as i haven’t got the pump back from the pump shop yet. I figured out how mix and match couplers and bolt the E6 pump onto the econovance. I wanted to bolt directly onto the block but the 3 bolt adapter on the E6 pump won’t direct bolt to the E7. Have to remove that and then it will but theres a drain back hole for oil at the bottom on the e7 that the E6 pump leaves exposed so i didn’t know what to do. So i figured out how to couple and bolt it to the econovance. As far as timing my old E6 was set about 22-23 but i read on this forum of a person doing this swap and recommended about 17. He said better to have too little advance than too much? Said 17 or so would be better for lower end torque. So im contemplating. thanks Josh -

Awesome thank you guys. Im still not totally sure how exactly im going to go about mounting my e6 pump, whether to the back of the econovance or directly. Seems fjh is exactly right about the shafts being keyed and not. Either way I will figure it out and make something work. thank you guys for the help im learning! Lol josh -
Converting e7 400 back to mechanical
Macktruckman replied to SelfloaderMack's topic in Engine and Transmission
Awesome thank you and please let us know how it pulls and works. Mine is hopefully even more simple because I am putting the e7 engine in a truck im taking an E6 out of and reusing the e6 mechanical pump so I already have the throttle linkage all in place. I test fit the E7 injector lines and they thread right on the delivery valves on the Robert Bosch E6 pump. What i haven’t figured out is how exactly to remove the econovance? Do i remove the 3 timing adjustment bolts from the front of the timing gear? I also wondered about leaving the econovance, as fjh said and just plug the oil supply. But would i be smarter to use a boost switch or something and try to make the econovance actually function? Anyway I hope someone can help with that too. Awesome to hear your truck works and im anxious to hear how it pulls and runs josh -

Macktruckman replied to SelfloaderMack's topic in Engine and Transmission
Ok i found the spring so thats a question i had so thank you for that. Is there a way to completely remove it and bolt my mechanical pump up directly? The bolt holes look to be there correct. It looks like just a matter of coupling to the gear? The coupling looks like my e6 josh -

I’m in the process of making a E7-400 vmac a mechanical engine myself. I have a robert Bosch pump from my e6 that I plan on using. Did you keep the econovance in place and somehow lock or pin it in place? Or did you remove it altogether? I would like to remove mine and bolt the pump up directly. Do you happen to have a part number for the injector lines needed? thank you, josh -
So I patched up the 2v and ran it several months and it let go again. I bought a 1995 E7-400 thats a vmac. I am going to use my robert bosch pump and convert it back to full mechanical. I have been told i can “pin” the econovance but i would rather just remove it and buy a set of fuel injector lines for an earlier E7 mechanical. Problem i have is with no vin number from a mechanical engine truck mack or vanderhaags cant help me. They all say they can get or have the lines i need but no way to verify which ones fit. So does anyone know the part #’s I need or does anyone have a 1990’s truck with an E7-400 or maybe 350 full mechanical that I can borrow a vin from to order lines? Also has anyone used Rochester diesel mack stage 1 or stage 2 injectors? Im on the fence about which injectors i want as well. Thank you guys
