  1. I forgot to mention one of the most, if not thee most important thing that is necessary in order to get one of these B models restored, (for you guys with families) is a spouse that is extremely understanding and can appreciate your dream of tooling down the road in one of these great old trucks....which I am extremely lucky to have...
  2. trying to get more pictures on here but I need to talk to Barry to learn how they can all be brought up on one post...oh well, here are a couple more.....
  3. Hi everyone, thought I would give another short update on the project.... The radiator is on, bottom radiator hose is connected, had to get a top rad hose that was 2" on the thermostat hsg end and 2.25" on the radiator end, which is done. Will get the heater hoses hooked up tomorrow, fabricated and made up the fuel lines, bled the fuel system and she runs well.....The exhaust is partially done, the 45 off the turbo is hooked up and I connected a piece of flex to get it out the bottom of the truck just to start it..The one thing that was a little difficult was the fuel pedal linkage.... on the b model, when the rod goes toward the rear, that is full throttle, well the newer fuel system was just the opposite!!!!when you pull back on the lever on the fuel system, that was idle, shove ahead and that was full fuel. I removed the lever off the fuel system, and installed it on the opposite side of the throttle shaft (toward the block) and installed it pointing down so the action is just the opposite...hard to explain but I will get a photo and put it on here so you can see...now it works well. I will keep the updates coming..
  4. Barry has been very helpful in my project of my B61....All the parts I have received have been excellent quality, shipping was fast, and he is very willing to help, thanks again Barry.
  5. Hey guys, just thought I would give a little update on the progress. The front balancer, fan, alternator and belts are on and aligned. The radiator is on and also for everyones future reference, the radiator support rods that run from the fire wall to the radiator are on, and clear the pipe going from the turbo to the aftercooler by less than 1/4".......I knew they would be close and they are. The starter is on and the solenoid has to go up, and located right against the cyl block, as the linkage for the foot pedal will hit if not. The solenoid can not go down because you can't get the bottom starter bolt in and if you turn it away from the block slightly in the down position, it hits the steering box. You also have to make sure the ground post on the back of the starter is toward the block, (approx 9 o'clock) if it is at 3 o'clock the oil filters will hit...If I had to do it over again, I think I would use my old flywheel housing from my 711....oh well, it is coming, I will give more updates and maybe in the next few days I will take more pictures.......
  6. No, I won't be working the truck, thanks for your concern, I know what you are saying. I have some old caterpillar tractors that I want to haul to shows and that is all I will be hauling with it. An occasional sunday drive..........
  7. Yes, I changed both.......I changed the complete water pump, also had to drill out the housing on the tranny from 3/8 bolts to the newer 7/16, but the pattern was the same...
  8. Hey everyone, thanks for all the interest and nice comments.....I will get more pictures on when I can, I have a few in my gallery of the truck when I got it and when I sand blasted the frame. The engine went in pretty smooth, I had to remove the oil pan to get the clearance over the front cross member. There are alot of things I am learning as I go, I used the original quad box tranny and push type double disc clutch (series 50). There was an interference problem with the newer engine flywheel housing and the old dish type flywheel that I used. I had to grind some off the lower portion of the housing to let the flywheel turn, it hit at first and kept the motor from turning....that was no good, but I am past that now... I had to build my front motor mount, I used part of the old mount and part of the newer style and welded the two of them together.....if any of you have questions or if anyone else has done this very same install, let me know I have some questions and I am more than willing to help if anyone needs something answered...I will try to help...
  9. I set the engine in place last week..Now begin to hook up everything. The front motor mount is done and in place since the picture was taken. The turbo is also installed..
  10. I looked at my engine today, it has a Robert Bosch fuel system.......
  11. I purchased a wrecked '78 RD model for the engine to install in my '64 B61 that had a bad engine. It sounds like I have the same engine you are talking about. It has the tip turbine fan with side mount aftercooler. Here are the numbers off the front cover of my motor: ETAZ673A. I am in the process of installing it in my B model right now....
  12. Scott, looks really nice, keep it up. Had a couple of questions for you....I am doing a similar project, I am installing an 673 with turbo and jake in my '64 B-model... did you have to raise the cab and inch or two to make room??? I have been told I will have to do that but I can't see why...... maybe we can keep in touch, and help each other thru these hair pulling projects.......thanks, Jeff.
  13. I am in the process of doing what you are asking right now.... I bought a '78 R model with a 673 with Jake, turbo, and aftercooler, (they tell me it is a 300 plus) and am installing it in my '64 B-61 tandem.... I know the front mount is different, the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, but I have to go from the 3/8" bolts to 7/16" which I have taken care of. We can talk on the phone if you want. In a few more weeks, I will have more info......I think I can leave the starter on the driver side, from my measurements, it looks like there is room...If someone knows this is not correct, please let me know........Thanks.
  14. Hey guys, need some input (help) here on an important issue. I have my old 711 engine out of my '64 B model. I am installing a little newer 673, but using my original quad box transmission. The 673 engine was coupled up to a newer 10 speed and the trans bell housing was deeper using a longer input shaft. my old quad box has a little shorter input shaft with a shallower bell housing. (The bell housings on both engines are the same and will work with no problem) What my question is, do I have to use my older style clutch from the 711/quad combo, and if I do, are there new clutch discs available so I can replace mine, or can I use the newer style clutch????? I have taken measurements but I seem to be coming up about an inch short on depth......if someone has done this let me know, or give me your phone ### and I will call and talk would be easier...thanks guys, if I can figure out how to post pictures I will....
  15. I just had my B61 painted, the cab is on the frame and the truck was movable, (ran) but all the fenders, hood, panels, chrome were off the truck...I already had all the body work done as far as primed and spot putty. My friend owns the body shop, he masked off and painted it mack red, then did all the panels separate...it cost me $500, I furnished all the materials, and I feel I got a really good deal.... If you want the frame blasted, that is probably in the neighborhood of $500 dollars just for the blast job. The painting and body work will be on top of that...hope this gives you an idea.. it ain't cheap.
  16. big thanks to all of you guys, I know I will have more questions before this is on the road. I think I am going to do it, maybe someday I can answer some questions for someone else.....if anyone else thinks of something about this, please let me know. I will try to post some pictures when it is done......
  17. Thanks Lmackattack, I remember reading that a few days ago, it sounds like maybe there is a little more than it looks like to get this done. I really didn't think it was going to be that bad... Is that what the engine I am looking at is??? a 300?? I didn't know that, I was surprised for the age of the R model that it wasn't a 237....well, I think I am going to dive into this and give it a try any way, maybe when it is over I will wish I wouldn't have...what do you think, should I just try to find a non-turboed 673 and drop in it ????
  18. Was hoping someone may be able to give me a little info on this project?? I have a '64 B61 with a 711 non turbo engine that is pumping oil out the exhaust quite severly... I have found a 1978 R model with a 673 turboed engine..the numbers on the front housing are ETAZ673A....from all of the looking and measuring I have done, I think it will drop in with some slight modifications to air piping and front motor mounts....it looks like the starter and air box on the left hand side won't be a problem, as I will be getting rid of the big canister oil filter that is on the 711..can anyone out there give me there experience or advise?? please......I really don't want to rebuild the 711 as it is what it is ya know.....this 673 I found has a jake also which I would really like to have...thanks for your help...
