  1. That was #276 Gregg.
What was it doing there, was it for sale?

I think Johnson Parks a few trucks there... It was out behind the garage hooked to a cattle pot. Maybe being used for yard tractor?

Absolutely! We missed you at Macungie. I did see one of your old trucks at Midway Western Star Monday, though. MH with Johnson stickers on the door.

  3. Haha..... Buffet announced himself he sold the stock?! So all the "sheep" sell off too. He can watch the stock for a week and buy it back for 1/3 the price.

But if you or I did that, we'd be up on charges for insider trading!

It seems like the R and DM models cabs came out with curved or contoured back in the 73 or 74, however I still see U models from the late 70s with the 'flat back cabs'. Any reason why the U models kept the flat back cabs longer?

The u model retained the flat-back cab throughout its run. The original purpose of the u model was as short a BBC as possible. I would assume this is why Mack kept it short.

    Gregg,
That sounds like some BS I might have started!
In all seriousness I did convert one of our MHs over to an electric wiper motor.
I said electric motor because I only did the LH (driver's side). As far as I'm concerned that's the only one you need anyway unless you have a RooBar on your truck.
I used, as you said, a wiper motor off an MR. I couldn't begin to tell you in detail how I did it but it worked quite well. The one I did is in a truck not to far from me. Maybe if the need ever arrises I could ask the owner if Icould remove it and take some pictures of it for you guys?
It was quite involved and I actually only made two of them. One for a spare, and then as time permitted was going to make electric motors for all of them. Never got around to installing but the one of them.
I like a challenge and was quite pleased with how it turned out. I even thought hey why not make one for the RH side!
Well with the duct work for the heater/air conditioner I gave up on that idea real fast!
With the motor set up I made for the driver's there was probably only about a 1/4" cleareance between the electric motor and the cross shaft off the clutch pedal!

At least I know who to call when my wipers quit working! Thanks for the insight, Ron. I would enjoy the challenge as well.

  6. Not if you're getting 8 MPG in a newer truck vs. 6 MPG in an old truck.

Most of what I read on this very forum, owners struggle to achieve 6mpg in new trucks. Plus the cost of DEF. Plus the cost of downtime. At least my downtime is mitigated by the lack of monthly payment. I fell for it once in my career, not gonna be persuaded to buy new again. I traded a E9 MH in 2000 on a brand new CX. Took a long time for me to accept the fact that I did end up with a good truck, but the cost benefits I was promised never materialized. I got a steady 5 mpg with 2 different V8s I owned, and my CX never got over 6 mpg. I don't work for UPS, I don't haul cardboard boxes and foam peanuts. Put 25 ton on the back of any truck new or old and you'll be right around 6mpg.

  8. You're probably right about the delay, but trying to make a living with a 1985 truck, even one of the best like a Mack MH, is a tougher job than any ELD mandate.

Trying to make a living with an ELD and an unreliable EGR/SCR truck and a $2500 note each month is far more challenging, I say.

  9. The problem is one of incompatibility- UPS has an ELD system that fulfilled the legal logbook requirements and worked fine for decades. Instead of using UPS system as a model, DOT cranked out their own requirements.

Part of the compliance issue going into the deadline is nobody knows what is a compliant device?!? FMCSA has not clarified the definition. I predict a delay because enforcement is not even ready for this December 18 mandate. Not going to bother me in the least I'll be going down the road in my 1985 cabover making money regardless.

  10. I hear you about the use of bigger rigs, but I wonder if the real world market would support it. I do a fair amount of traveling on interstates and it always strikes me about how few doubles I see compared to 40 foot singles. I would think that if the economics of larger loads supported the use of more doubles they would be out there.

Not to mention that our current fleet is greatly underutilized. Many of those 53' vans are lightly or only partially loaded, not to mention the scores of trailers staged for drop and hook operations.
