  1. Our 2001 RD690 has the 44,000 fabricated and the rear rear has been leaking for years. We took the rear out welded it and it lasted about a month. Has been leaking for last 4 or 5 years since fix. Never have seen cast housings crack. We have a set of 46,000 cast one and and we are thinking about putting those in.

    Just replace the rearmost housing with a cast one, save the other cast housing from your spare set of tandems for the next truck that has that issue.
  2. That happens because the transverse torque rod is constantly trying to tear the diff out of the banjo housing every time the truck goes around a corner. I've welded them before, as long as you vee out the crack, get good penetration & then put a reinforcement plate on the outside of the housing, it will usually stay fixed. The other way to solve the problem is to find a used "cast" banjo housing to replace the fabricated one. The cast housings don't crack under those conditions. Cast housongs are getting hard to find though, because most have been bought up for just that reason.

  3. As far as I know, Hank is not as involved with the forum as much as the Moderator, Rob Archer. I'm surprised to see that the view count is up to 135 and the reply count still stands at 5. I wonder if they are just ignoring it and hoping it will go away. Rob does an excellent job of maintaining order over there and it's unusual to not see him reply to that thread, unless of course he's away somewhere and not accessing the site.

    Either that or they're keeping their communications about it in PM, so we can't see it.
  4. Camelback springs are the only way to go.

    When I was running my fleet I decided to try air ride, found a used CL with the Mack (Hendrickson) air ride.

    Big mistake!!!!! That truck was paralyzed as soon as it left the pavement. Locking the power divider helped some, but when you lock the power divider you are over torquing the axle that does have traction.

    Learned my lesson & sold it after a couple of seasons & replaced it with a different CL on camelback.

In most states unless you have an overweight permit you're allowed 20,000 lbs on a single drive axle, & you can run 20,000 lbs on the steer axle also, but only if the steer axle & steer tires are designed to handle that weight. Most single axle trucks have a 12,000 lb steer axle, so you get 20,000 on the drive & 12,000 on the steer which equals 32,000 lbs gross.

It could be that the O rings on the piston in the deep reduction cylinder are shot, allowing air to leak from the "pressurized" side of the piston to the "non pressurized" side of the piston, and then the air flows back thru the line and comes out of the exhaust port on the control valve. If this is the case, then it's possible the previous owner intentionally disconected the deep reduction so that prospective buyers wouldn't hear a massive air leak if they flipped the deep reduction switch.

    Nothing like a blast of Ego to humble the masses. I'm not the greatest at shifting by a long shot,but unlike all of you,I wasn't born with "the touch",I've had to work at getting better and shifting smoother. Doesn't help that most of what I've driven has been without a tach (or ANY gauges in a couple of trucks) and have had mis-matched boxes (common on ranch trucks around here,where they use whatever is lying around to get the truck back to work.) I applaud your talent and pious nature! :clap:

    Not being egotistical at all, anyone who knows me personally knows I'm not like that. I just cringe when I hear a transmission being abused by someone that doesn't know what they're doing, hence that tagline on my posts.

  8. My dad was a mechanic for Gulf and they bought a bunch of 88 R models with T2060s in them and he could not get it through to the drivers you only split first gear but they still tried splitting every gear anyway.

    The ratios don't work out for split shifting anyhow. You would think that after trying that once they would have realized you're not supposed to drive it like a 10 speed.

  9. Im going to guess and say the original owner may have broke the lever off to keep drivers from driving it like a 10 speed and tearing up the back case. People get in a truck with a lever on the shifting knob and think they have a Hi and lo side. This trans does not have a synchronizer. Every T2060 I see has a failure in the aux case because of improper shifting. If lo reverse and lo 1st arent needed I would leave it in high and drive it like a 5 speed. Ive taken the air shift lever and airlines off by owner request just to prevent future failures. Even if the owner is the only driver, somewhere some mechanic will get in and attempt to shift it like a 10 speed and start the failure. Sounds like the previous owner paid for trans repairs due to improper shifting. Its a simple costly mistake that WILL happen.

    That will be all well & good until the truck gets into some soft ground or has to start off loaded on a steep hill & the driver smokes the clutch trying to get it moving without lo lo.

  10. That's a disease with the Mack 9, 13 & 18 speed transmissions. The Hi range/lo range synchro starts acting up, causing a terrible grind on the first few shifts when the truck is cold, then it keeps getting progressively worse as time goes on, which leads to the teeth on the hi/lo shifter getting worn down to the point that the trans will jump out of gear when you put the power to it. As Rick said above, Mack has updated parts available that are supposed to cure this problem. Another way you can avoid the clashing on cold upshifts is to shift by going from 3rd lo range to high range on the button & lo on the stick, then shift up from there in hi range. This allows the range shift to take place at lower transmission rpm, hence less strain on the range shift synchros. I had one that started clashing when cold & I nursed it along for quite a while by shifting it that way until it warmed up.

  11. fuller 10 speed will be shorter than an 8LL it doesnt have a compound reduction back box, it will fit right in the same hole and use the same shifter,etc. but you will have to lengthen the first driveshaft section 4 inches. I would fix the 8LL you will miss the Double low 14.45 gear, the rtlo 10 spd has a 11.06 low gear its a huge difference off road.

    That's the comment I was gonna make.

    A 10 speed won't have a deep enough reduction in low gear for a loaded roll off truck to start off in soft ground without abusing the clutch..
