  1. Mike Osborne in Riverton WY put a set of Dale Francis headers on his E9 and likes them. He runs his truck in the high RPM's anyway. He has a 2180 trans. and if it gets down to 1800 he splits a gear and pumps it back up. An E9 is a high rpm engine by nature(big bore, short stroke) and should not be lugged down, that's what breaks head bolts and blows head gaskets. Mike and I have talked about the headers but they are expensive. He recommends that I just try to improve on the manifold. Make something that flows out of the exhaust port rather than something that comes out and hits a brick wall.

  2. When you say Niagara, you want the Queenston/Lewiston bridge NOT Rainbow(no truck traffic) b0Bo

10-4. Thanks alot. I've wrote your # down and I'll give you a call when I get up there. If your available we'll try to meet up for a cup of coffee and some good Mack Truck stories.

  3. BUBBA I live 30 miles from Guelph. Dont worry about speed limiter law 93 and down are EXEMPT! I never turned my RB(01) down nor will I! which way you comming up? if through Detroit/windsor you got a SUPER SCALE 10miles inside Ont, next scale is 150miles @ Putnam, then clear to Guelph. Both coups are usualy open 24h. If comming from NY/Ont you got scale just out side Fort Erie, next one is 45miles to Vineland(ASSHOLES!) and clear saling to Guelph! if comiing fron NY, GOOD dealership in Stoney creek(HAMILTON)right off the QEW, ask for Johnny R! tell him BOBO sent ya if you need anything. Dont worry about you truck I looked at you pic many times you wont have any problems up here with it GOOD LUCK

    BOBO

Thanks for the info. I'm going to be coming up next week. I guess I'll be crossing over at Niagara, PC Miler and mapquest say that's the quickest way from where I live in SC. I've never been to Canada before so I'm excited, also a litte nervous because I don't know what to expect. It's a good opportunity for me and I hope it will open up some new doors. THANKS!!

  4. Customer wants me to take a load to Guelph Ontario, Canada. Got my passport, got a CVR# so I can get a temporary trip permit. What else do I need and what kind of problem can I expect. Oh yeah, my truck is a 1990 with a mechanical pump. My buddies have checked with their companies, one with Landstar and one with Mercer, and they say I'm exempt from the speed limiter law.

  5. Well im gonna put a new fuel pump and injectors in this winter, and was wondering if 4000 rpm is unreasonable with stock heads and cam. Im gonna try to make my own headers cause the turbo im gonna run wont bolt up to the stock manifold. Theres a couple of CATS that need mauled around here and this may do the trick. :)

Sounds like you need to talk to JR Collins. He's got a lot of technology tied up in the Buckeye Bulldog, but I think he told me they a running a special cam and lifters but the heads are built with standard parts that you can buy off the Mack shelf and he's turning that thing between 5000 and 6000 rpm's.

  6. What is the difference between the 4c turbo (holset i assume?) than the H5ca? I bought an H5ca for my e9 to use for truck pulling and cant even spin it. I made no boost what so ever first time out. Wow did i look like an idiot! I guess i need tons more fuel than i have to spin it.

Out of curiousity what r the housing #'s on that 4c? I know Jerry at "Young and Sons" in Indianapolis can hook me up if I get him the right numbers.

Was the stock turbo giving u guys problems? I know i'm using mine for a different purpose, but i am making 50 psi out of the stocker and the pyros not even getting hot all.

My E9 is at 2:40 in the video. our 6 cyl is at 3:18.

    Later ~Joe~

I'm not sure what a H5ca is but I know a Holset 4C is a bad boy. Stay away from the 610(5134) turbo. That thing spooled up real fast. It started making power around 1100 rpm and by 1600 rpm it was played out. I wouldn't recommend it for a pulling application or a over the road truck. I've heard of people blowing that 610 turbo up on hot E7 400's. For a pulling truck you might need a HT80. My engineer friend says a HT 80 is a 4C on steroids!

  7. The air ride suspension on my 1990 Superliner has gotten out of whack. We replaced the suspension about 4 year ago with a 2000 Hendrickson/Mack air ride out of a CH. The only problem is that the truck we got the suspenion from was not mine and I don't have the vin # to go by. Does anyone know the proper ride height for a 2000 Hendrickson air ride that's under a 1990 Superliner(double frame) and is it even that critical?

  8. The offer still stands. My unit is about 7 years old it has been sitting on my shelf wrapped up in the original box for 3 years. It was working when I took it off. Be glad to give it up to anybody thinks they can use it.

My friend Dan has a 94 CL with an E9 and he might want to give that thing a try. I'll talk to him and see.

  9. Im thinking the same as you. On a mechanical pump, and inj's., which is crude system how could it not help, by pushing the fuel a bit and refining it. On an electric pump/high psi inj. I dont think it would help. Thats why Im asking. A few years ago when I was shop foreman we installed taggers(fuel atomizers)they didnt do a thing on the c15's but old mech E7 400 gained almost a half gallon.

Bubbamobilin what f.a.s.s part number do you use? thanks bobo

    Bobo,

I'm not sure which f.a.s.s unit I'm running but I will check it out and get back to you. My E7 is running the f.a.s.s system and my E9 has a Fuel Preporator. I think I would take up Underdog's offer to pay shipping on his unit and try it. He was trying to run it on a E-Tech engine and these engines have a better supply system and I don't think the benfit is as great.

  10. I just got a turbo off a RVI 560/610hp for $150cdn. I took it apart when I got it, its brand new! THE BEST $150 I'VE EVER SPENT! with the 525turbo Did you have to adv. the timing to make it work better?

Me and Dan are running Holset 4C turbos. I think they are for a Cummins N-14 444 or 460 hp. I ran a Mack turbo for years that was for a Aussie 610 and I will never run this turbo again. It was a disaster. I think the last four numbers in the Mack part number was 5134 or 5124 I can't remember but my engineer buddy at Hagerstown told me that turbo was a piece of junk. It built good boost, more than the stock turbo, but it made my engine run hot. It could not get rid of the exhaust fast enough. The turbine is too small for the compressor. Water temps and pyro temps went out the roof. I had to baby it everwhere. The Aussie turbos are for low end torque like an EM6 300 with a 6 speed. If you want to build horsepower in an E9 go with a Holset 4C, HT 60 or HT 80 and find you a good injection pump man who can build you a hot pump with a set of injectors to match and you'll be king of the road.

  11. hey any one ever try or use a F.A.S.S. fuel system on an E9? or an E7? Im thinking of getting 1 for the superliner but not sure what one to get. bobo

I ran a fuel preporator on an 1989 Superliner with and mechanical E7 400, it made all the difference in the world. The truck never ran well when it was below 1/2 tank of fuel and the primary filter was always half empty when I would change it. It definitly helped with the power and fuel economy. It helped with the power so much I was able to go from a 4:42 ratio to a 4:17 ratio with a T2090 transmission and the engine was able to pull it without modifications. When the fuel preporator went bad I replaced it with a FASS system and we are still running it to this day. I also built a 1990 Superliner with an E9 500 and before I ever put it on the road I installed one on it too. I am still running the E9 500 also. I will never be without one of these systems as long as I'm running trucks with mechanical injection pumps and mechanical supply pumps. I talked to an engineer at the Hagerstown Powertrain Plant and he told me that as long as the electric pump could maintain 1 pound of pressure at the supply pump it was a benefit.

  12. thanks.

I have a friend that ceramic coated his exhaust manifolds all the way to the turbo. He noticed cooler pyro temps but no noticable increase in boost or horsepower. If anything it is good insurance to do this to help things run cooler.

  13. Problem could also be the liner O-rings letting water get into the crankcase. E9 stuff getting harder to find because people like me who are still runnng E9's don't want to get rid of our spare parts. I grateful to have 2 complete E'9s and another half of one to keep my 1990 Superliner going.

  14. Can anybody tell if the Superliner ever came with a air ride cab,if it came from the factory with a sleeper on it.If if did were was the exhust mounted? From what I have been able to find out is that a day cab came with the exhust mounted to the cab,but I can seem to find out were it was mounted if it had a sleeper.I am having a sleeper built, from Double Eagle and there are running into a exhust problem.

    Thanks AL

Talk to Rocky Miller @ Double Eagle. I have a 60" Double Eagle on my Superliner with a Windjammer top. It has the dual recessed corners to accomadate the Mack exhaust system. He should know what to do. I bought my sleeper from him back in late '99 or early '00. If you don't want the recess corners the only other option is to run the exhaust up the back of the sleeper like a CH or CL. Yuck!!!!!!!

  15. Ok I my Suoerliner is just about ready for the road,1989 E 9 440 hp.I was going to use it for a back up truck, problem is it came out to nice to use once in a while.Truck is real tight, drop the pan on the motor rods and mains look new,I got the truck from the 2nd owner,so I have some of the history, truck never left Texas, shows 490,000 miles, might be,might not, sure looks like it the real milage.I want to run it everday,I run about 7,500 miles a month, run in a 200 mile area of Oklahoma, pull a flatbed, loaded one way, come back empty. How reliable is the E 9?,I want to sell my 2006 Western star, and run the Mack.No problems with the star, just want to drive a real truck again.I haul under contract to one customer,so reliabilty is a real big concern to me.

I run my E9 everyday hauling 80k across the mountains of western NC and east TN. I put about 30k a year on her and she's running fine. Just overhauled it last year and it had about 550k miles on it. Before the overhaul she was blowing head gaskets and breaking head bolts but never any bottom end trouble. Since the overhaul she has not missed a lick. The guy who did my pump, injector and turbo says I'm in the 700 hp range with it. All I know is that the boys with those 550 yellow motors can't keep up.

  16. I have heard these two are comparable motors....but the v8 mack is more reliable in road use any truth to that? I heard that you can get some major HP from the 3408 cats but the Crank is prone to snap. They definately sound the same, there is no better sound in the world than the E9 w/ straight pipes :SMOKIE-LFT:

    /quote

Rob is exactly right. The 3408's snap cranks because the block is cast on a 60 degree V and the E9 is a 90 degree V. I learned this from the master himself JR Collins. 60 degrees is not enough room to keep all that spinning cast iron out of the way of itself. E9's also get better fuel economy. :mack1:

  17. I was looking up information in a motors manual and decided to look at macks. I came across a mack V8 998 cid ( EM9-400 or 400 R and EMC9-400 or 400R)? 5 3/8 bore and 5 1/2 stroke. Is this a superliner engine or what models had this? What does this thing weigh and how well does it run? And the most important question has anybody squeezed this engine into any type of B series?

    Randy

Best damn engine Mack ever built was the E-9. They do weigh alot and cost more to work on than a six cylinder, but you have 2 more cylinders and 2 more heads but the power they generate makes it well worth any extra cost. I think the first year you could get one was 1982. A 16 liter engine in 1982. Just goes to show Mack has always been ahead of their time. Not only do they make tremendous horsepower but the get very decent fuel economy. I have a 1990 Superliner with a E-9 and pull flatbeds and lowboys always grossing 80000 plus, and I average 5.52mpg. Not too shabbey if you you ask me. And there are not many trucks on the road that can run with it, except other E-9's. :mack1::thumb:

  18. I live in New England and own an old DM-686 tri axle.237 w/jake,6spd,58k rears. My family lives in Gainsville GA and wants me to move there.Could i make any $ with this old dog down there?I know i'd have to take off the 3rd axle. Thanks for any answers  :thumb:    :mack1:

I live in SC but I do notice when I go to GA you never see any tri-axles. I was told, and read in the other replys that GA does no recognize a tri-axle configuration. Therefore a lift axle is just additonal empty weight that you do not need. :mack1:

  19. Bubba, I have one that is in excellent condition, even has the lid on it! I should have another from my truck because the rear cab wall was cut out to install the walk-in sleeper. Will look for it next day or two. I'm in So. Arkansas, make me an offer.

Thanks for the response. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I have no idea what a glove box is worth and I don't like putting a price on another man's stuff. Tell me what you need for them and we'll go from there. Thanks! :mack1::thumb:
