  1. what do you think jerry, run it and forget i ever saw it???????

bigen I would play like I never saw it. The experts say it doesn't belong anywhere in the engine so I'm thinking it was dropped in by accident and fell down an oil galley while the cover was off to run the overhead. As many miles as you've run by now I'm betting you're safe.

  2. if you have the time i would pull the inlet tube to the turbo and check for any thing in there also wouldnt put it past any one that drove for or got mad at the person that owned the truck before you. the co i work for now got two bolts wraped with alum duct tape out of the intake manifold on one of their RD coaltrucks (things people will do)...joe

Yep people do some mean things. I bought an old truck years ago that kept starving for fuel in a pull. The injector pump checked out fine so on further investigation I found grease rags and rubber balls in the fuel tanks stopping up the pickup.

bigen's screw may have fell straight through while the covers were off to run the overhead.

  3. im truckin like im a young man, only it hurts.

spent last weekend installing stainless full fenders.

just over 11,000 miles and only rubed a hole in the air line going to seat. have not added any fluids.... shut it down for a three day weekend, gona give her a service and a real good checking over. when i traded trucks i let them slide on putting my michelin tires on this truck for centermatics all around. i had them on the old truck, and am a firm believer in them, old truck had 8 hole wheels, so the centermatics wouldn't work on this one. and this truck had brand new tires but they are chineeezzze tyres. look like mitchelin copies. im gona start a new post called bigens turbo, would appreciate your opinion.

bigen I thought about your truck today when I was working on my water system. I was adding a new line for aux heater on the trailer and decided to look at my screen. That danged thing was so stopped up it had collapsed. I run a water filter and had serviced it when I pout the new water pump and housing on, about 2-3 weeks ago. It was funky with some kind of red grainy looking muck. It must be something that came in from the trailer system. Now I'm going to engineer some sort of in-line filter for the trailer.

Thanks for bringing up this screen subject.

  4. To save money you could do it your self, it's really not that hard but I have done so many so it seems easy to me. Mack says no-no on the reuse of the fuel lines but this is for liablity reasons (alot of AC engines caught fire due to reused lines). Any time we do one under warranty we use all new everything and follow the newest service bulletins. But when we have one not covered by warranty and the customer is dirt poor, we have just slipped in some new gaskets and reused the fuel lines. If you mark the line with the location and install it back in the same hole most time it wont leak. We do a long test drive to make sure (25mile). The real problem gaskets/studs is #3 and #4. If it has the new style studs on those 2 locations I see no reason to change them all if it was my money.

when I replaced #5 gasket I loosened the manifold nuts on the other 5 cylinders about half way. Then I put double nut on the studs for #5 to use as a stud puller and take the studs out of that hole. Then I slid the manifold out against the nuts and drop the old gasket from #5 and slide the new one in. Then I put the 2 studs back in and tightened the manifold back down to specs. I didn't have to loose any injector lines or anything else. If I were to replace #4 gasket I would have to drop off the EGR mixer tube but that's only 2 clamps.

It won't work like that if you have heat shields or something in the way but it worked out fine for me as mine has no upper shield on the rear half of manifold..

  5. wow if we would have had equipment like this in our 20's

yeah buddy. When I was in my 20s I was herding an Emeryville with a great big old 220 Cummins and a 5 speed over with 2 speed rearend. Then a B61 with 673P and triplex, then a H model with 673 with a 9sp Mack overdrive. When I got up to a cabover Pete with a 270 Cat and 5 X 3 I thought I was the cock of the walk.

  6. From what I have seen , when the turbo makes a "squeal" during high boost it is usually a turbo gasket or the intake manifold gaskets. I know you have been through this before but the smaller the leak the louder the noise. All the exhaust back pressure in the exhaust manifold trying to spin the turbo puts a real strain on the gaskets. Make sure all your turbo nuts and manifold nuts/studs are there. I have already seen the new style/ new fix stud/spacer fail on some Tyson trucks.

I'll check mine. A leak sounds about right. Since Houston has never been right on anything else they've repaired I better take look into this for leaks.

  7. bigen every turbo that's been on my 460 screams loud. A shop guy at Mack in Houston told me it's the waste gate that makes that noise. I don't know what it is but it doesn't effect my power or fuel mileage.

I have to agree with you it's fun to turn loose a bull dog on a large car Pete or KW. Some of the sidewalk sissies can't stand the pressure. I loaded in Chicago Wednesday evening at 3pm and unloaded 6pm in the Alamo on Thursday. That's no new speed record but it's alright for a one eyed old fat man. I'd have done better if I didn't get so sleepy down by Neelyville.

  8. how much stuff do you get out of it after 6 months???

i was thinking change diffs, trans, power steering fluid, coolant and clean screen, every 100,000 miles????????"??

I don't find over just a few speckles in it cleaning that often. I see the bulletin MackPro posted says change it so I guess I'll start changing at least 1 per year. I change my differentials and tranny oil every 100,000 to 125,000 and rotate my tires every 50,000. I use centramatic tire balancers all the way around and haven't had a cupped out tire in a long time.

I don't know if it helps but I feel better doing it and usually I don't have much trouble selling my old truck when I decide to trade up. I'm back in the Windy trouble free again.:mack1::thumb:

    How's your new ride doing??

  9. truck had complete emmision system replaced 400,000 miles. it has 450,000 now, how often should i clean the screen?

should i replace all coolant each time???? can i reuse 50% of old coolant

it has pink phillp 66 coolant, i had trouble with this in other motors. is it okay to switch to the green stuff????

the first time I cleaned mine it had about 300,000 on it and looked like it had been used to sift red dirt. I cleaned it then and started cleaning it about every 6 months no matter what mileage.

If I use green coolant I have to add PH treatment but if I use the red Conoco antifreeze I've never had to use additive for PH. I think maybe Conoco red must have additives already in it. I like to flush the system and use new every 6 months. My buddies say that's too often to service but that's okay. I grease my truck every week and change oil at 10-12,000. I think antifreeze and grease is cheaper than parts.

  10. we could call it an egr filter. its time for me to go to bed, as you can tell i've been up far to long.

    ramblings of a madman

if i could restrict the egr 25%, could it lower egr cooler temps 50% and still scate through a california dot insp. ??

would it over heat the egr vaulve, turbo, or other coponets???????

i could buy a fleet of low milage 04,05, for penny's on the dollar and make reliable trucks out of them

That sounds more like you're thinking out loud than rambling to me bigen. keep it up. I put the plate back in mine and it's doing fine. When the EGR cooler cracked cost me about $1300 and it hasn't cracked another since I put in the plate.

Mack has washed their hands of the 04 problems and left us to die so I'm going to keep Obama engineering on mine until something gives. I got another no trouble round under it's belt this week. That's about 9000 miles since a belly-up so that's a new record for it. hooray :chili::clap::chili:

One day I might get brave and try an ECM for a E-teck 460 and throw all the pollution crap away. I keep watching to see if someone here has done that before but haven't seen anything. If all I have to do is switch the ECM I'd do it next week end.

  11. Ya be careful!

As For Jerrys coolant jug I thought you had the big round aluninum tank on there already!

No on the tank, they kept being on back order at Mack so we put the update thermostat housing and bottom radiator hose and static fill hose on but left the old jugs in place.

HK that might help too so thanks for the idea :chili::pat::banana:

  12. when I figure out how to post it I'll post a picture of my "coolant pushing" cure. After putting a new waterpump and housing on mine it started pushing coolant again. I had the cylinders and heads checked and they found no problems so we didn't know what else to do.

I went to the boneyard and got a 2.5 gallon steel coolant reservoir from an older Western Star because it is round and looked easy to modify the reservoir brackets on my truck to fit it. When I installed it I only filled it halfway with coolant to leave room for whatever and put a new 7 pounds pressure cap on.

So far on 5500 miles or so it hasn't lost any coolant and never over pressures the 7 pounds radiator cap. I've been driving it like it belongs to my mother in law and I'm mad at her. damifino why but I think it's fixed.

  13. the vision is the most comfortable truck i ever sat in quiet, smooth and roomy, like nothing else.

I think so too bigen. I think my Vision is overall the most comfortable truck I've ever been in. Now if I could just make a round or 2 without a $1500-$2500 breakdown I'd be a happy camper. In the early 70's I put a 250 Cummins in an H model Mack so I know with the right cutting tip and the right duct tape this Vision might come into a 60 series Detroit this summer..

  14. Wohoo progress on a all fronts, Charlie You need to tone down your going to jinks your self.pat.gif

Yeah I thought the binding was just part of life and it's never been real real bad so when I caught this post I tried the Dextron. If you and MackPro keep posting I might get my mess in shape to make a round trip one day without another bank loan thanks guys. :thumb::chili::thumb:

  15. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SB414004

    Date: 02/13/06

    Model: CXN, CHN, CXP

(Also applies to Mack Trucks Australia)

Change to DEXRON® III in the Power Steering System

Effective December 12, 2005, DEXRON® III became the factory fill for the power steering system on all CXP, CXN and CHN model chassis. Chassis using DEXRON® III in the power steering system can be identified by the label affixed to the power steering reservoir (refer to figure 1 below).

Any DEXRON®-type fluid can be used in the power steering system.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When adding fluid to the power steering system, always check the label on the side of the reservoir and be sure to use the correct fluid.

Thanks for posting the update MackPro. My manual says to use the same 15/40 oil in steering as we use in engine so I've always used Delvac 1300. I've always had a slight bind on left turns but with the Dextron it's smooth as glass again. Thanks again Jerry.

  16. I have an 04 Vision with 460/18sp. The Vision is by far the most comfortable truck and I like it more than any truck I've driven but the 460 Mack engine is the most unreliable contraption I've ever owned. I bought mine with just over 200,000 miles on it and soon discovered why it looked so clean and had such low miles for it's age, the owner before me simply could not keep it on the road.

I listen to fjh he knows what's up. If the bugs are worked out of it you've found a treasure.
