  1. From the album: New Engine for Mack, Jr.

Got the old engine out without a hitch! Next, the Bell Housing, Starter, and Flywheel will have to come off, as they will be reused on the "new" 283 V-8.
  2. From the album: New Engine for Mack, Jr.

The exhaust pipe didn't want to let go of the manifold, so Seth and I are discussing how to make it cooperate.
  3. From the album: New Engine for Mack, Jr.

Here's Seth, who, like his dad, used to work for Mack Truck Sales of Tulsa, getting the engine chained up to the cherry picker.
  4. From the album: New Engine for Mack, Jr.

The radiator was drained and pulled, and the hoses and belts were removed. Then, we disconnected all of the wiring and linkages, along with the motor mount bolts. All that's left is to hook it up and pull it out!

After 44 years of faithful service, the old 230 CID Inline Six finally gave up the ghost. It threw a rod, but, thankfully, didn't poke a hole in the block. I was driving it in town an barely got it home after it happened. I found a man who wants to buy it, rebuild it, and put it in his Nova. The money I get for it will pay for the rebuild parts needed for the SM420 Transmission.

Hard to see, but here is Nathaniel and Seth carrying the hood to the trailer.
  7. From the album: New Engine for Mack, Jr.

Here's my truck, wheels chocked and jack stands in place, right before we removed the 4-speed SM420 Transmission.
  8. Thanks! I never thought of that - if we do anything like this, we always use the metal jack stands. However, this time we were at Seth's house, and forgot them. Could have used Dad's stands he made from a Model T axle - can't crush those! I'll make SURE we don't forget again! I appreciate your concern and advice!
  9. More pictures of the transformation of an ordinary 1965 Chevrolet pickup into "Mack, Jr." - My Gallery Additions can be found in the following galleries: * "Mackification" * New Engine * Rear End Rebuild Let me know what ya'll think...
  10. Changing over from original 3.73 ring & pinion set (great for farm use, horrible for street operation) to 3.08 set.
  11. From the album: Rear End Rebuild

Cleaned, wirewheeled, primed with Rustoleum's Rust Reformer Paint, then painted with HighGloss Black paint. Installed with stainless steel bolts, lock washers, and flat washers. Looks nice to me! Also makes rest of truck look a lot worse than it did under there when everything was greasy and dirty! Oh well - Dad always said, "Get the mechanical parts running right FIRST, and cosmetics LAST: You can't drive pretty!" Cosmetics will come last...

Here's a closeup shop of the new ring and pinion gears, bearings, and carrier installed. Good job Seth! Couldn't have done it without him!
  13. From the album: Rear End Rebuild

They're expensive, but I bough the original Shop Manuals for the truck, cut the binding off, placed each page in an archive-quality sheet protector, then placed them in two large d-ring binders. WORTH IT!

Here's Seth pulling the original rear ends gears, carrier, shims, and bearings...

    * New Water Pump (painted with high-temp flat black). * New Harmonic Balancer from DamperDoctor.com (GREAT guy who sold me the RIGHT harmonic balancer for the 283, NOT a generic for all Chevy small block engines!). * Chrome Timing Cover & Gasket. * New Polished Aluminum Crank & Water Pump Pulleys. * New Fuel Pump and Mounting Plate.

Installed a rebuilt Holley Economizer 4-BBL Carburetor (450 CFM). Direct replacement for the GM Quadrajet designed by Holley in the middle 1970's during the Jimmy Carter years when gasoline became hard to get. A longtime auto parts man turned me on to this model. Found a guy in Colorado who rebuilds them with a 90 day warranty. Really nice fellow - allowed me to order it with a manual choke. Looks great!

Found a used Edlebrock Performer Intake Manifold locally for a good price. Installed it and a new HEI distributor I bought on eBay.
  20. From the album: New Engine for Mack, Jr.
