  1. Check the speedo sensor adjustment and also go over these 2 bulletins. I have seen these issuses happen and not turn on the check engine light but log it for a few seconds in a laptop. The first version of the 9-2 bulletin it had us checking the starter, as if the starter was orignal, they had issuses in the solonid shorting out when the motor leaned due to torque under a load. They took that part out of the bulletin though and I cant find the orignal.

  2. Our dump truck guys here with the CV's and CT's with the AI engine are getting 4.9 to 5.2 total average, with 5.3 being the highest I've see. The older RD's and CV's and CL's with the regular ETECH engines get a little better. My friends 2013 GU with a 415C MP-8 with 22,000 miles on it is getting 6.2 going down the road, 6.6 in cruise and 9.0 in the sweet spot. However his idle time and PTO time bring him down to 5.8.

  3. His 2012 had 505 with Mack 310 trans and 3.42 rears. His 2015 has the 505+, same Mack T310 but 3.21 rears, His overall MPG average has jumped 1 mile per gallon over his 2012. I think he is at 7.1 overall . This is a daycab that pulls all kinds of different trailers and has no MPH limit on the throttle pedal but is driven by the same person/owner. I'll try to get get a print out of the trip MPG when he is here next.

  4. Probably turbo bad. But you might want to remove after cooler hose at intake manifold on driver side of engine and check for oil. If oil in intake then the turbo shot . If no oil in intake get engine hot , remove the turbo and cap the oil supply line and start it, hold a clean piece of cardboard a foot away from the exhaust manifold and watch for specks of oil. If you get oil there it could be valve seals/guide, to much idling or worse.

  5. On a 1998/99 to 2001 ETECH, there is no difference between a 427 and a 460 except for the download. Jumping from 300/350/400 up to the 427/460 levels does require off set cam gear key way, turbo and injectors and download. On a 2002 and up CCRS ETECH engine the difference between the 427 and 460 engines is turbo and injectors and download. All CCRS, ASET AI/AC engines use a straight cam gear keyway.

  6. I always vote for cups and or injectors. Here is the new info on inspection of your injectors. Look closely at your sealing surface of the injectors , Use the graphite paste and and new injector hold down bolts. Check for cracked tips on the injector with a magnifing glass. Cracks run up and down of the long tip of the injector that goes into the cup. And some times the whole body of the injector just breaks in half. Of course it could also be the the fuel pressure relief valve in front of the head, the filter fuel stand, the fuel supply pump or just a leaking fuel line on the suction side. Look for fuel dripping from where the supply pump bolts the the power steering pump. Seems like 90+% of the time its cup or injector related in our shop.

  7. Westport, Cummins former partner in NG engine development liked the Diesel ignited NG engine design against the spark ignited versions like Cummins uses.

Only issue is the Diesel/NG engines I've seen has an SCR system to compensate for the Diesel. Seems a waste.

I hear Westport will be teaming with Volvo instead of Cummins now. They are interested in the D13 and have given up on the ISX15.

If you ever see the test unit have a look to see if it has Westport's name on it anywhere.

Yes, our guy said it was a MP-8/D13 that they were adding the NG to. And yes, he said its downfall is that it will have SCR on it. Cumins/Westport looks like the way to go for now.

  8. I see the UPS natural gas CXU's through here all the time. They seem happy with them. We just sent a guy to school on them. Cummins sure has the market cornered on the class 8 engines for now. Our Tech that went to school on them says the Mack MP natural gas engine is being tested now however its a hybrid and runs on diesel and naural gas both

  9. Is your 2003 460HP an ASET (EGR engine)? The 2006 you mentioned is a 460P with 487 HP is a ASET engine. Usually 2003's are ETECH (CCRS) engines. The two engines are wildy different and your better off with the ETECH engine. Unless you like changing high dollar EGR coolers and valves and turbos. If your 2003 somehow does have a ASET 460E (460HP) it can be bumped with a software download at a dealer to 460P. No parts change needed. Send we the last 6 of your VIN on the 2003 and I can see what can be done.
