  1. I think the cleaning and blasting are comming to an end. My frame is in primer and trunnion bracket is painted to go in. It's nice to stop taking things apart and put something back together. Now my only snag is still power divider parts. I hate to update to new style rears because I recently spent over $2000 on new driveshafts.

Don't know why but I couldn't make my pictures small enough to load with this post so they are in my photo album.

  2. Buck,

You should be OK changing to 2 - 12V batteries. Use the best you can buy group#31 950 or 1000 CCA. I run my R model with 2 batteries and have never had a problem. Just be sure the starter and the wiring is in good shape. One battery per box will do it or two in one box wired in parallel not in series like the six volt.

  3. post-141-1156963756_thumb.jpgAll was going well. I removed the dump body (it was in poor shape) and then I was going to install the fifth wheel. Well then I decided that I should address that frame crack and as long I was there I should...... I think I blacked out then, when I came to this is where I was. I think the cat had somethig to do with it. Hopefully picture will attach. I will try to add others to my gallery.

  4. Chuck,

When you say that the 4.00 ratio is available what do you mean ? can new gears be ordered and put in an old rear end. Thanks

The 4.00 ratio was very popular in the single axle R and U models from 1965 production on. I'm not sure on gear set interchange with a older carrier. But a newer carrier should go into the older axle housing OK.

  5. Hi folks,

I thought I would tell you a brief story about my adventure with CT DMV the other day. I needed to register a dump trailer that I had purchased. This trailer is a 1979. I had been looking for something old enough to qualify for antique registration that was in decent condition. So off to DMV I went. After explaining my intent to a few people there they gave me the forms to fill out. Then came my turn at the counter. There seemed to be a little confusion about what I wanted to do. Then there were several trips the clerk had to make to ask the supervisor questions. Then the answer came back "we don't make antique plates for trailers". But hey said if it was not commercial and for my own use I could register it as a "Camp Trailer". So I walked out of DMV with a strange smile and registration for a 80,000lb camp trailer. I wonder what the police will think? :D

  6. David,

I was thinking it might be a 510 but I can't find the stamped numbers. The only info I have found for B60 says it should have a 465. Also I''m in CT, that may be too far for you but I'll give it a good check over as far a compression and oil press anyway.

  7. Can anyone help me identify this engine? The only info I have says ID# should be on rt frt eng leg? I do know it has 12 headbolts per head and it uses D-14 plugs. It is currently on a B-60 chassis. It does run if anyone needs it.

    Thanks Chuck

  8. I could be wrong but I seem to remember the new style seals also need new style springs. It gets to be an expensive update. You might want to check with a machine shop and see what is availible aftermarket. Let us know how you make out.

  9. Hi folks,

I'm looking for some ideas on what to do with a set of single axle springs for one of my B models. I've got a nice matched set of springs but they are kind of rusty. I plan to take them apart but how should I clean them. I thought of sand blast but will the surface be left too rough? I'm thinking of my needle scaler it leaves a better surface and seals the pores in the metal. Then the paint. Paint the entire leaf, mask off the center 6" or so for good U-bolt torque, only paint after assy. And then what about powder coat? So many decisions, help. :idunno: What have you folks had success with?

    Thanks Chuck

  10. Well folks a quick update on this pair. The B60 looks the best but isn't. The cab and sheetmetal is poor ( I think they put the bondo on with a snow shovel) The engine is also very tight. Lots of good hard parts and small misc. The B422 has been worked very hard and then raped. Front end very worn out, broken rear springs ugly old welds ect. All small items have been removed (dash cluster, glove box, def vents, emblems. lights ect) On a positive note though after much convincing (mostly with a hammer )the 5 stuck delivery valve plungers are loose and the engine runs! :chili: So don't think I'm just in it to cut them up. I've got 5 other old Macks that need some attention. So these organ doners will live on.

The oil capacity for the engine and the filter need to be added together. If you remove the plug from the top of the filter housing you can prefill the filter somewhat. Depending on how much you get into the filter if there is only a few quarts left to it's capacity you could put it in the engine. Once the engine and filter have oil in them start the engine and let it idle. Loosen the plug on the filter and let the air out. Once air is out shut down engine and recheck oil level. That is how I was shown to do it if I'm wrong someone correct me. But I been taking care of my trucks that way.

  12. Not a bad weekend inspite of the rain. I got to pick up a couple of parts trucks. A B422S that had been converted to diesel. It should run , makes some smoke but won't quite fire. I suspect fuel rack may be stuck in pump. It has old style pump with hydraulic governor. I'm not real familiar with those but I guess I will learn. If anyone has info on these please enlighten me. The other truck is a B60T may not be much hope for the engine it seems to be quite stuck. But plenty of other good parts. As I get into these trucks I will list any parts surplus to my needs.

  13. Hi folks,

Does anyone know if there is a way to find the model year of a Trailmobile flatbed from the VIN number. I emailed them and got no responce. I tried a parts vendor who deals with them and they told him. I have the wrong VIN number the info will be on the ID tag. This trailer is old the number I have is stamped into the front of the kingpin plate. The first two digits are 41 I think this may be the year. The last digits are the length 29' 6". If any has any other ideas please let me know. I am hoping to register this and pull it with one of my B models.

    Thanks Chuck

  14. Thanks for input folks. It looks like this thing may use a 90 adapter. I had a chance to see another one that was complete. I also checked my line sheet and it looks like it lists some sort of adapter. I guess it isn't as simple as my R model that goes staight in with no adapter. I have a few Mack cables in stock (different lengths) and they have a few different drive ends in a package but this trans has a square the same size as the cable. I think I may have to cut down one that is a little long and get some ends and a ratio adapter. The hardware supplier I use has the cable ends and crimper I just need to check on the adapter. Oh well I guess it's all part of the fun. My highlight tody was when I came back to the barn and found a pair of brand new 11.00R 22 Goodyears my tire man dropped off. Boy do those look impressive. I guess they should for the price.
