I was not even my fathers thought back in the 60s but some of the good places I recall from the early 2000s.

Pepermill casino I80 in Wendover NV.  They picked you up in a golf cart in the truck stop lot and brought you to the front door of the casino for a free room.

cant recal the name but it was I80 in Truckee CA. cold springs road exit. there was a old restaurant tucked back from the road that every time I stopped in there was some sort of fun going on there. the locals were friendly and always had stories to share. I think its been bulldozed recently.

Siebkens Elkhart Lake, WI famous for the Road America Racetrack but that place has so many stories from truckers to race car drivers. its tamed down some but I never had a bad time there

The Ocean Deck Daytona Beach FL.... good times ,good views bike week was fun as well

Yeah, Peppermill is cool.  about 2 miles from the salt flats.  Stayed there several times during Speed week at Bonneville.

And yep Ocean Deck is still there, I think,  At least it was several years ago.  Don't know if it survived the recent several years hurricanes.

  2. For many years Boy Scouts helped boys develop into respectful, well-mannered, young men.  And likewise Girl Scouts helped girls develop into well-mannered, respectful young women.

It is a sad day indeed that the leaders of the BSA cave in to the demands of loony fringe groups.  How many Dads will encourage their sons to become a Boy Scout?  And how many Moms will encourage their young daughters to go on intramural camping trips?

Tee BSA should have stood their ground against the gay activists, and, if unable to prevail, they should have disbanded the organization.  Sad day indeed...

My Fathers Place in Roslyn  N.Y. lot of soon to be famous Rock Bands got their start there.

The Iron Horse in Glen Head   Biker bar when cycles had a bad image.

Cloud Nine  also in Glen Head  Big name groups played there in the late 60's early 70's , like Mountain, Country Joe and Warren Zevon.

Mimi's and Mimi's II on Boulevard Nguyen Hue in Saigon. Cheap beer and best looking Gai Diem girls. The owner had probably the only 1969 Boss 429 Mustang in Asia.

And Jeez, I forgot to mention a couple of wild places in Phillly.   (I was there in Philly until I got thrown out of Drexel University among other places.)

The Trauma, and  of course The Old Electric Factory, saw The Grateful Dead, The Who, Otis Reading, etc., etc.  Absolutely crazy, jam packed joints in the late '60s.

  4. Some memorable places I frequented in the '60s and have fond memories.  (Is that ridiculous or what?  Who remembers places you had a beer or two 50+ years ago?)

6 West, Miami Springs, FL --  Place is  long gone but back in the day was jam packed with stewardesses (before they were called flight attendants. Talk about eye candy...)

Pier 66, Ft. Lauderdale, FL --  Revolving bar atop the high-rise hotel.  Definitely classy back then.

The Elbo Room, Ft. Lauderdale -- Famous place from the movie, Connie Francis, spring brake antics.  Still there.  (Google it if you don't know about its' history.)

Mac's Famous Bar, Daytona Beach, FL -- Place burned years ago but it was a nice friendly place back in the day.

Gracie's, Main St., Daytona Beach -- long, long gone.  Used to be 5 cent draft beer.  What's not to like?

The Jade Tavern, Moorestown, NJ. -- Still there with a different name now.  Of't told story, famous for refusing to serve a beer to Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1950.  Manager grabbed a gun and chased him off the premises.

Perhaps you also recall a few notables in your life with a memory or two to share.

Sorry for the stupid post - ramblings of an old guy.

Ford awards CEO Hackett $16.7 million as he tries tricky turnaround

    Bloomberg  /  March 29, 2018

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. awarded $16.7 million in compensation to CEO Jim Hackett in his first year in the role as the former office furniture executive attempts a tricky turnaround aimed at reversing a stock slide, reviving profits and preparing the nearly 115-year-old company for the autonomous age.

Ford used to say "Quality is Job1.  I think quality is not #1 any more.  More like Job 8 or 9...

    Small cars lose money

Ford CFO Bob Shanks said small cars and "most Lincoln products" are among those losing money. (Due to slow sales because their quality is poor compared to other manufacturers vehicles in those segments.)

  8. Survey results (from 12 of my buddies) are in and it is unanimous.  We all support the implementation of a new $.01 per gallon of fuel and $1.00 per tire federal excise tax provided however that the proceeds are used solely for the purpose of locating, acquiring, and crushing undesirable road trash as follows:

    Pontiac Azteks,

    Ford Aerostars,

    Ford Pinto station wagons

    Chevrolet Vegas

Said taxing authority shall expire upon completion of this important public service endeavor.

  9. Several months ago wife and I were visiting our daughter #2 and her hubby at their home in Corpus.  We all went out for a birthday celebration party.  Wife and I came back to the house early, about midnight and went to bed.  I was sleepin' good but then was awoken later by noise of a door slamming when daughter finally came home.  I rolled over and looked at the  clock on the night stand.  Clock said quarter 'till three.  Inexplicably, that old song (from 1961) came roaring back into my brain and stuck there for several weeks.  Quarter to Three was top of the charts in 1961.  Turns out the saxophonist, Gene "Daddy G" Barge is still alive at 91 years old and the singer Gary US Bonds is still kicking too.  I found an early version on YouTube and then a later one of those guys reunited about 5 years ago that I thought was a pretty cool video.  Probably makes me a geezer if I like a song from 1961 but  maybe you too can enjoy at least the revisited version.

  10. My old Deere lawn tractor with 18 hp Kawasaki engine and hydrostatic trans ran flawlessly for 30 years mowing 2 acres weekly.  I finally gave it away 2 years ago when the front axle pivot shaft mount cracked where it was welded to the frame.  Dealers wouldn't work on it because you'd have to remove just about everything from the frame to get to it.  I worked on for several hours and busted knuckles and finally gave up on it.

I didn't like the lighter construction of the new Deere mowers so we spent a little extra and got a Toro Timecutter 4250 with Toro's own 24 hp V2 engine. It's a zero turn and cut mowing time for our place from 3-1/2 hours to 1-1/2 hours.  Way quicker.  Bonus - wife actually likes driving it so I'm pleasantly retired from that task.  Now, if only I could get her to like weed eating...

  11. When I was a little kid in the late '50s my Dad took my brother and me to the Philadelphia Navy yard and we were able to do a walk through tour of a battleship, a destroyer, and a submarine.

    The three things I remember:

On the deck of the battleship was a huge projectile standing on end that was nearly as tall as I was  --- the submarine was so much smaller inside than I could imagine. sleeping quarters was in hammocks, 4 or 5 hammocks above each other on both sides of a narrow aisle --- and they were getting ready to seal and weld the hatches shut and pump out the air and fill it with inert gas for long term storage or so we were told at the time.

That was about 60 years ago but I'll never forget how small/tight the inside of that sub.  No room for fat guys or really tall guys, only regular sized patriots...

Sad to see all the navy relics gone from that yard.  Both my grandfathers worked there during WWII, one an electrician, the other an accountant.  40,000 people worked there during the war.

Seen one of the first AC130 gun ship on a night run in Vietnam do a pylon turn locked on with the Xeon light all 4 miniguns and 4 Vulcans all firing at once. There was nothing left of the ground personnel but rags.  It's now on display at Elgin Air Force base in Florida.

That Vulcan is one incredible weapon.  Something GE invented that worked well.  Hard to imagine 4 of those things firing at once.  A 20 mm projectile at 100 rounds per second...

  13. Sound like a parenting problem.  Parents that allowed a dangerous, ignorant malcontent to fester under their supervision.  There's really no easy fix for bad genes and bad parenting.

Kid must have a really low, low IQ. And add a stunning lack of understanding of "actions and consequences."  Doesn't understand he will never drive a car again, never stroll down Main St. again, never go to a movie theater again, etc.  Just be somebodies bit-h for the rest of his days.  Obviously he didn't have any concept of consequences.  Hard to ignore the parents role in this awful situation.
