What is the difference between a 5&4 and a Quad Box?

A Mack Quadruplex is a 5x4, all in one integral unit, as opposed to other types of 5x4 setups that use a 5 speed main transmission connected to a 4 speed auxiliary transmission with a short external driveshaft & U joints between the main & auxiliary.

Fuller did make an integral 5x4 for a short time, it was the 20c75, but they're scarce.

Just like he said, the Mack is a married unit, all attached. Transmissions described as 5x4 are for the most part, divorced. Linked by a driveshaft.

A 5 and 4 is a 5 speed trans with a 4 speed trans behind it, with a short drive line between them, a guad box is a 5 speed with a 4 speed atached behind it, it is called married boxes.

The quadroplex is much faster shifting and has about 250 rpm split between every gear,except you do not use the deep under ( first in the brownie ) except in bad spots to start out.

and it is much the same with the 5 and 4s except the progressive styles

The 5 and 4 fullers and spicers are also good trans but they do not have the same rpm split in every gear and it is to no purpose to catch every gear, for instance 3rd over is so close to 4th under (or low split) it is hard to make that shift so to keep from just wasting time most drivers go from 4th under to 3rd direct hope that helped
