IVECO on the podium of the first stage of the famous Rally

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 3, 2017

The 39th edition of Dakar Rally is underway. The participants started early in the morning in Asunción, Paraguay, and headed to Resistencia, in Argentina. Although just 39 kilometres long, this first stage was a particularly tough timed drive on Paraguayan soil.

Ton van Genugten was IVECO's man of the day, finishing the stage just 13 seconds behind the leader, Martin Kolomy with Tatra. The Dutchman, behind the wheel of the IVECO Trakker #507, benefited from the leaders opening the roads ahead of him, and he managed to maintain the pace that led him to the second best time of the day.

Gerard de Rooy did exactly what he had said he would, and didn't push his truck 100% on the first day, as the stage was short, the risks very high and the chances of gaining a big advantage were small.

"We deflated the tyres because we had a problem in a system, but this was after the special, during the liasion. We didn't lose race time. In the stage we did a great job. We weren't the fastest, but we focused on not losing time," remarked Gerard de Rooy.

Gerard de Rooy, Dakar winner in 2012 and 2016, closed the special in the 5th place, 42 seconds behind the leader, placing a second IVECO truck in the Top 5.

Wuf van Ginkel had a hard time of the stage between Asunción-Resistencia with the IVECO Trakker #525. The Dutchman lost too much time on the road and finished 20 minutes behind the leader, falling back past the 40th position. This will leave him starting at the back of the field tomorrow and he will not be able to provide quick assistance to his Iveco teammates should they need it.

Federico Villagra, with the other IVECO Powerstar, didn't take risks in this first stage and achieved a 9th place, with his sights set on climbing the classification in the coming days. The Argentine driver finished 1m26s behind de leader, placing a third IVECO truck in the top 10 of the day.

On Tuesday, the competitors will drive from Resistencia to San Miguel de Tucumán, in the north of Argentina. It will be a long day, with 812 kilometres for Trucks, with 275 of them timed for the special stage.

Dakar 2017: IVECO places two trucks in top 10 in very fast second stage

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 4, 2017

The Dakar caravan arrived at the Bivouac in Tucumán, north of Argentina, after a long day and an 800- kilometre drive. The four IVECO crews remain in close contention for the race, with the two Powerstars in the Top 10.

The trucks arrived at the finish line covered in mud and dust, and the drivers told the press about the particularly tough conditions in several parts of the route due to flying dust in the early part of the race while later they had to contend with a lot of surface water on the roads. The mud and high speeds –over 100 km/h - were the main hazards in this special.

With two fifth places in the first two days of racing, Gerard de Rooy's IVECO is now fourth in the overall classification, with more than three hours in the bag. He finished the second stage 3m03s behind Martin van der Brink, winner of the day and first in the overall classification. Today De Rooy was only 11 seconds away from the podium.

The Iveco Trakkers remained a bit behind in the second stage. Ton van Genugten, the Dutchman who won IVECO its first stage podium in this 2017 Dakar Rally in yesterday's race, suffered a puncture and finished 13m01s behind the winner, falling from 2nd place to 16th in the classification.

Wuf van Ginkel climbed several positions today, recovering from the 42nd position of his first day to finish 26th, which puts him in 28th in the overall classification.

Federico Villagra, the argentine driver who finished third in the last Dakar, arrived sixth, two seconds behind De Rooy. Villagra moved up two places, from 9th to 7th, in the overall classification. Both Powerstars are looking to be consistent in the stages, which will take them to climb positions towards the pódium.

The Dakar Rally will continue on its way to the north of Argentina and for the first time this year it will climb over the 4,000 metres above sea level. The Truck category will have a special stage 146 kilometres long and another 416 kilometres of liasion to arrive in San Salvador de Jujuy.

Dakar 2017: Flat tyres cost De Rooy time but Villagra puts IVECO on the podium in very challenging stage

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 5, 2017

The third stage of the 2017 Dakar Rally proved to be a great challenge in navigation for the crews of all categories. Although their route was shorter than the other classes', Trucks demonstrated their abilities in the ascent to San Salvador de Jujuy on tracks 4,000 metres above sea level.

The 199 kilometres of the stage were divided into two sections, where the difficult conditions of the dry riverbeds in the first portion and the great altitude of the second posed the greatest challenge.

Gerard de Rooy, PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team leader, had issues with his tyres. Already in the first part of the stage, three tyres deflated and he was unable to inflate them quickly due to a failure in the system. This cost the team more than half an hour and, when they arrived to the connecting section, they received two extra tyres from Wuf van Ginkel, who also provides direct assistance to his IVECO teammates.

"The system broke down. Because of that three tyres deflated," explained De Rooy. The team swapped two tyres with the spare wheels they had with them, but for the third one, "we had to stop six times to pump it manually. Van Ginkel gaves us two new tyres, so that we were able to continue safely in the second part, with new tyres in reserve." The 2016 champion team lost 34m16s, finishing 33m37s behind the leader, and in 18th position in the overall classification.

Ton van Genugten started the day by taking the lead in Waypoint 1 (WP1), but the Dutchman in the IVECO Trakker lost some time in the following points and was penalised with 20 minutes after the stage for having jumped one of the Waypoints. This meant that he lost the third place and fell back to 12th in the stage and in the overall classification. In spite of this, Van Genugten gave the best performance of the PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO team.

After assisting Gerard de Rooy, Wuf van Ginkel continued on his way to 10th place, but was also handed a penalty for the same reason as his teammate. In the end he was classified in 16th position and lost his Top 20 position in the combined times.

After the penalties and with another Iveco Powerstar, Federico Villagra sealed a neat stage to secure Van Genugten's third position, 4m33s behind the best time of the stage, securing the provisional third place in the overall classification as well.

The 2017 Dakar Rally will cross the border to Bolivia, where competitors will have to cope with the altitude, desert and big temperature variations. Thursday the vehicles will have a 416 kilometre drive at more than 3,000 metres above sea level to reach Tupiza.

Dakar 2017: IVECO and De Rooy victorious in fourth stage

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 6, 2017

The world's toughest rally raid crossed the border to Bolivia, entering a third country in only four days of racing. Stage 4 proved to be very hard for the crews, as they had to cope with altitudes of more than 3,500 metres above sea level and difficult navigation through the sand dunes approaching Tupiza, where today's special ended.

After a long timed section of 416 kilometres and almost five hours, Gerard de Rooy's IVECO managed to overtake Airat Mardeev's Kamaz in the last section to secure a victory in the fourth stage of the 2017 Dakar Rally. This is a great sign that yesterday's problems in the tyre system are now resolved and the Dutchman is back in contention for the leading places. In the overall classification he has climbed back to fifth position, 14m15s behind the leader.

The iveco Trakkers did a great job and finished the stage inside the Top 10. Ton van Genugten took his #507 to 7th position, having worked hard on the road to Tupiza and gained a lot of ground in the second part.

Wuf van Ginkel, who is tasked with providing technical and mechanical assistance to his teammates in the PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team, finished the stage 25m32s behind the leader, in 10th place..

With today's performance, Van Genugten and Van Ginkel move up in the overall classification, Ton in 10th place and Wuf in 16th position.

Behind the wheel of the other IVECO Powerstar in the race, Federico Villagra finished in the Top 5 and moved up to second place in overall classification, as his rivals lost time in today's stage.

On Friday, the Dakar caravan will travel north to Oruro, in Bolivia, with a timed stage of 438 kilometres for Trucks.

Dakar 2017: IVECO and De Rooy win second stage in a row in shortened special

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 7, 2017

A total of 438 kilometres were programmed in two different sections between Tupiza and Oruro. But heavy rain and hail led to the decision of stopping the race at the end of the first part of the special.

Gerard de Rooy, thanks to a faultless driving and a great performance of his Iveco Powerstar, managed to secure a very important win, with the race coming close to the midpoint. The Dutchman led from the start and remained in front of the Trucks category to close the day with a time of 2h39m12s, almost twelve minutes faster than Eduard Nikolaev with a Kamaz.

"In the first 100 kilometres we went through the mountains. It was very hard. At the beginning it was a bit dry, but then it started to rain. We had good grip and managed to get through perfectly in the navigation, while rivals got lost," stated Gerard de Rooy, who reached his 32nd stage win in Dakar Rallies.

With two consecutive wins, the Petronas Team De Rooy Iveco leader reached the top of the overall classification for the first time in 2017, despite losing half an hour two days ago due to tyre problems.

Ton van Genugten had trouble in the first part of the stage, as he got stuck in the mud due to the heavy rain. The Iveco Trakker #507 lost almost four hours to his teammate De Rooy, and his chances of getting in the Top 10 are now diminished, although there is more than half of the race ahead.

Wuf van Ginkel and his crew got lost in different parts of the special and helped his teammate Van Genugten, which made them lose a lot of time. They finished 3h57m26s behind the leader. Van Ginkel and Van Genugten also received an additional two-hour penalty at the end of the stage.

Not the best day in the office for Federico Villagra, who was second overall yesterday. With another Iveco Powerstar, the Argentine lost 46m50s to De Rooy and fell back to sixth.

Stage 6 of 2017 Dakar Rally will link Oruro and La Paz, being the longest special of the race with 513 timed kilometres covering 4,400 metres above sea level in the middle of the stage.

Dakar 2017: Stage 6 cancelled due to bad weather

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 7, 2017

Several vehicles got in trouble in the extremely muddy conditions in yesterday's stage, a truck tipped over in a river, and the navigation with the route map became almost impossible for the participants. As weather conditions did not improve, Marc Coma and the organisers decided to cancel Stage 6, which was to be the longest in the 2017 edition of the rally.

The decision was made on Friday night, when the bad conditions of the roads for Saturday were confirmed. In a press release, ASO reported the situation:

"Considering the extreme climatic conditions and that some drivers are still on the stage course, considering that is impossible to bring vehicles of all participants back to the bivouac and prepare the next stage in the best conditions, and considering that people of the organisation in charge of the reco of tomorrow's stage course informed that the road is unpracticable, the 6th stage of ORURO-LA PAZ has been cancelled."

As Sunday will be the Rest Day for drivers, this means that there will be no competition until Monday, when the crews will attack the La Paz – Uyuni stage.

Gerard de Rooy and IVECO start the weekend at the top of the overall classification, having won the last two specials.
Dutchmen from, Ton van Genugten and Wuf van Ginkel, will be able to work on their IVECO Trakkers #507 and #525 in preparation for the second part of the race, having had a difficult stage on Friday. Meanwhile, Federico Villagra, behind the wheel of another IVECO Powerstar, will set his sights on returning to the Top 5 in the general classification.

Dakar 2017: IVECO in the lead as the crews take their rest day

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 9, 2017

The 2017 Dakar Rally arrived to the midpoint as the crews drove the connecting section to the camp in La Paz after Stage 6 was cancelled due to heavy rain and flooded roads.

With five stages already contested, the IVECO Powerstar #500 driven by Gerard de Rooy, Moi Torrallardona and Darek Rodewald, is at the top of the standings. The PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO team leader won the last two specials after suffering three punctures in the third day of competition.

Gerard de Rooy, with IVECO, leads in front of Eduard Nikolaev, Dmitry Sotnikov and Airat Mardeev with their Kamaz trucks, all of them locked within 16 minutes behind the leader. Dakar’s last champion did a solid job in South America’s hardest routes, in a competition that already crossed Paraguay, part of Bolivia and the north of Argentina.

Ton van Genugten and Wuf van Ginkel will set their sights on returning to the Top 20 of the race in the second part, after losing more than four hours and an additional two-hour penalty in the last timed stage.

Van Genugten, navigated by Anton van Limpt and Bernard der Kinderen in the Trakker #507, were stuck in mud, a nightmare for them and other drivers. Wuf van Ginkel, joined by Erik Kofman and Bert van Donkelaar in the Trakker #525, helped their teammates to get out from the difficult situation. This was a turning point for both crews, who were running inside the best 15 of the class. Now, they hope to have a clean second week.

Federico Villagra, Adrián Yacopini and Ricardo Torlaschi, on board the IVECO #502, will aim to return to the Top 5, after falling back to sixth place in the first half of the race. With a good performance of the Powerstar and regular results, Villagra will try to repeat last year’s third place on the podium.

The 2017 Dakar Rally will be travel south from this Monday onwards, when the vehicles leave La Paz to reach Uyuni after 322 timed kilometres. On Tuesday they will head back to Argentina to race in Salta, Chilecito, San Juan, Río Cuarto and Buenos Aires, going over the landmark of 2.000 kilometres in the last week of the race.

Dakar 2017: IVECO wins two podium places and overall lead

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 10, 2017

The 2017 Dakar Rally caravan is again moving after two days without race activity due to heavy rain in Bolivia. The organisation was forced once again to shorten Stage 7, as a result of the continuous bad weather affecting the roads.

The 322 kilometres special was cut to half and only 161 kilometres were taken into account for the clock in a mixed stage with sections of Stage 6 – which was cancelled on Saturday – and Stage 7. This is the beginning of the "Marathon Stage", where the teams of all categories except Trucks are not allowed to work on their cars and only the drivers are allowed to do the job.

Despite of the difficulties for the participants, it has been a great day for the PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team. With the #507 Trakker, Ton van Genugten finished in the second place, only 2m51s behind Sotnikov, winner of the day. The Dutchman benefits from this fantastic result to advance in the overall classification, after a hard end of the first part of the Dakar.

Gerard de Rooy, last Dakar winner in Trucks, secured a good fourth place that keeps him in the overall lead in his #500 Powerstar with five stages still to run until the arrival in Buenos Aires.

Wuf van Ginkel, with the #525 Iveco Trakker, fell back to 13th place, 12 minutes behind the leader. This puts him more than seven hours behind the leaders and outside the Top 20 in the overall classification.

In the #502 Powerstar, Federico Villagra achieved another podium finish and arrived third in Uyuni, less than one minute behind Ton van Genugten. The Argentine driver is now in fifth position, placing a second IVECO inside the Top 5 in the overall classification.

The race will continue on its way to Argentina tomorrow, in a very long day for the participants. Almost 900 kilometres will be run, with 492 of them in a timed stage between Bolivia and Argentina.

Dakar 2017: Gerard de Rooy keeps fighting for the lead

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 11, 2017

Bad weather conditions are having a negative effect in 2017 Dakar Rally. For the third day of racing in a row, the organisation is forced to cancel part of a stage. The Truck category was the most affected, with its race finished after the first control point. As a consequence of the heavy rain, Route 9 in Jujuy was blocked by an avalanche and the caravan had to stop on its way to the biouvac in Salta.

Ton van Genugten was the man of the day for the PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team, as he finished just 3m49s behind Martin van der Brink, winner of the stage. The Dutchman in the #507 Trakker is maintaining a good pace in the toughest roads of South America, but regrets the six hours lost in the mud a couple of specials behind, which is keeping him far away from the leaders in the overall classification.

Gerard de Rooy suffered another puncture and lost the first place in the general. Yesterday’s setback was not big: he arrived only seven minutes behind the leader, falling back to the third place with his #500 Powerstar, so that he is only 2m20s away from the lead.

Wuf van Ginkel finished very close to the Top 10, 10m42s behind the best time of Stage 8. The #525 Trakker is looking to move up in the overall standings to enter the Top 20 of the race.

Federico Villagra placed the best IVECO truck of the day in second place after battling head to head with Martin van der Brink, who beat him by 17 seconds. The Argentine driver takes advantage of Mardeev’s delay to advance to fourth place overall.

The organisation will try to solve the complications with the avalanche that blocked the caravan in Route 9 to keep moving along on the path to Buenos Aires. In first instance, 406 kilometres are programmed for the ‘Super Belén’ between Salta and Chilecito.

Stage 8 Results – Dakar 2017

Dakar 2017: Trucks drive straight to bivouac as Stage 9 is cancelled

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 12, 2017

The world’s toughest Rally Raid is suffering from the harsh Summer weather on the South American mountains. The organisation is forced to cancel at least part of a stage in most Dakar Rallies, but in this year’s edition, 1,395 kilometres have been already lost, and all of them in just five of the nine stages.

An avalanche on Route 9, in the liaison section for the Caravan race in the province of Jujuy, has blocked the road so that vehicles and assistance could not make it to the bivouac in Salta. The Dakar organisation did not have any choice and cancelled the special, so that drivers and teams are making their way safely to the camp in Chilecito.

With only 57% of the race run, Gerard de Rooy’s IVECO Powerstar remains in contention for the lead and is in third place on the podium, just 2m20s behind leader Dmitry Sotnikov. This gap can change dramatically in only one special, so Dakar’s last winner is confident he can repeat his win this year.
“I am third, two minutes behind. That’s hardly any time at all,” stated Gerard de Rooy after finishing yesterday’s shortened stage.

Ton van Genugten’s and Wuf van Ginkel’s IVECO Trakkers are fighting hard to move up into the Top 20, after losing more than six hours for having been stuck in mud a couple of stages ago. They have the perfect truck to reach their goal before the finish in Buenos Aires.

Meanwhile, Federico Villagra with a second IVECO Powerstar, remains among the Dakar’s best five drivers, but he still aims to win a stage and finish in the best possible position.

If the organisation follows its normal course, Stage 10 will link Chilecito and San Juan.

Dakar 2017: a hard stage for Gerard de Rooy leaves him in third place

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 13, 2017

The Dakar Rally was able to complete a full race day for the first time in a week, as the competition linked Chilecito and San Juan, in the west of Argentina. Stage 10 was the longest special in the race, as partial or full cancellations were made in the previous five stages. Yesterday, drivers of all categories drove 449 timed kilometres to reach the bivouac in San Juan.

It was not an easy day for IVECO, although Gerard de Rooy had a strong start in his #500 Powerstar. The PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team leader was less than a minute behind the first truck at Waypoint 1, but then fell 23m43s back as two flat tyres cost him time. Although he managed to hang on to the third place he was holding in the morning, he is now 24m17s behind the leader.

Ton van Genugten and Wuf van Ginkel’s Trakkers started behind their teammate De Rooy, and both suffered in this hard stage. In the first section they lost half an hour and finished in the Top 15. Van Genugten finished 35m02s behind leader Nikolaev, while Van Ginkel placed his #525 Trakker 37m54s behind.

Federico Villagra, behind the wheel of his #502 Iveco Powerstar, lost more than half an hour in this difficult special that took away his chances of climbing up in the classification. The Argentine remains in fourth place, but almost one hour behind the leader’s Kamaz.

The race is approaching Buenos Aires, where on Saturday 14th the ceremonial finish will take place and winners will receive their trophies at the an end of the 9,000 kilometre trek along South American routes.

Dakar 2017: Three IVECO trucks in Top Ten in Stage 11

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 14, 2017

The Dakar Rally is getting close to the end. The caravan of trucks that survived the harsh conditions of the first 11 stages arrived today at the bivouac in Río Cuarto, in the province of Córdoba, after racing 290 kilometres in dunes and WRC roads and driving almost 500 kilometres of the connecting section, since the start of the day in San Juan.

After some difficult stages with punctures in his #500 Powerstar, Gerard de Rooy placed his IVECO in the Top 5 of today's special, but he was unable to narrow the gap with the leaders due to a great amount of dust in part of the stage. The PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team leader finished in fifth place, 14m41s behind Eduard Nikolaev, winner of the special.

"In the last 100 kilometres I was driving behind a cloud of dust and there were trees to contend with. It was impossible to overtake, the risk of writing off the truck was just too great," stated Gerard de Rooy after the stage.

Ton van Genugten, with the #507 IVECO Trakker finished very close to teammate De Rooy, less than three minutes behind. This left him 17m40s off the best time in sixth position, and clearly shows he delivered a great performance in almost every special in Dakar Rally.

Wuf van Ginkel started Stage 11 one minute behind Van Genugten and finished in eighth place, five minutes behind his teammate and 22m43s away from the leader. With van Ginkel's placement, three PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO Team trucks are in the Top 10 of the stage.

Meanwhile, Federico Villagra came very close to winning the special, having lost the lead in the last part to Eduard Nikolaev and finishing just 52s behind him. This places the Argentine with the #502 IVECO Powerstar in fourth place in the overall classification.

On Saturday, the 2017 Dakar Rally will reach its final destination in Buenos Aires, with the ceremonial ramp where winners will be crowned after completing more than 9,000 kilometres. But first, participants will race in a 64 kilometres loop stage in Río Cuarto to proclaim the champions of the Dakar Rally's 39th edition.

Dakar 2017: IVECO once again on the podium of the world’s toughest rally

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 15, 2017

The 39th edition of the Dakar Rally came to an end with Saturday's twelfth stage. With a short special of 64 kilometres looping Río Cuarto, participants took their vehicles to the finish line to conclude world's most difficult rally raid.

Gerard de Rooy, PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO team leader and winner of the 2012 and 2016 Dakar rallies with IVECO, took his Powerstar to the third spot on the podium having battled adversity and jockeyed for position with his rivals during the two weeks' competition.

Having led the race, the Dutchman suffered several punctures through the stages. As a result he fell back behind other vehicles, so that excessive dust and limited opportunities to overtake frustrated his efforts to regain the lead. But the power of his IVECO truck enabled to add another podium finish to his name, as he finished third, 41m19s behind Dakar winner, Eduard Nikolaev.

Ton van Genugten's and Wuf van Ginkel's IVECO Trakkers travelled together in the last stages and recovered some positions after loosing more than six hours for being stuck in mud.

Van Genugten, behind the wheel of the #507, finished in 16th place, almost seven hours away from the leaders. Van Ginkel arrived behind his teammate in 17th position, but more than eight hours behind.

Behind the wheel of another IVECO Powerstar, Federico Villagra finished the 2017 Dakar Rally just behind De Rooy in fourth place. He was not able to repeat last year's podium win and is yet to achieve his aim to win a stage. However, the Argentine driver showed good potential in his second year with IVECO.

IVECO in top three Dakar finish

Iveco Trucks Press Release  /  January 16, 2017

IVECO trucks have once again performed strongly in this year’s gruelling Dakar Rally, taking out third and fourth positions after 9,000 kilometres of racing across South America’s roughest terrain.

Piloted by Dutchman Gerard de Rooy, the IVECO Powerstar finished on the podium only 41m 19s short of winner Eduard Nikolaev, after 12 days of close racing.

This year’s third placing – which included two stage victories – adds to de Rooy’s wins in 2016 and 2012 and is seen as an excellent result given the multiple punctures his truck suffered over the course of the event.

Also performing strongly this year was Argentinian Federico Villagra, in another IVECO Powerstar – he finished the event in fourth position, less than 20 minutes behind de Rooy.

In total, six IVECO trucks competed in the 2017 instalment of Dakar, with all completing the event, a testament to the manufacturer’s strength and reliability.

Iveco Australia Marketing Manager, Darren Swenson, says IVECO’s off-road range has tremendous pedigree and is second to none in the Australian market.

“Local buyers have a lot of choice from IVECO when it comes to off-road vehicles, with many models available across the light, medium and heavy duty weight classes,” he said.

“Beginning with the new car licence Daily 4x4 (optional light truck 5.5t GVM also available), the range then moves to the Eurocargo 4x4 as successfully used by Daryl Beattie Adventures and a growing number of emergency service organisations.

“For heavier duty applications up to 33t GVM, there’s the Trakker 4x4 and 6x6 range which is increasingly being put to work in mining and exploration applications. And in the even heavier weight classes up to 48t GVM, we have the Astra 6x6 and 8x8 variants which are taking on roles in off-road tipper work, drilling, exploration and similar.

Mr Swenson says the Dakar rally was helping to grow awareness of IVECO’s off-road credentials.

“IVECO is gaining a very solid reputation in demanding off-road racing such as Dakar, and increasingly this is leading to improved sales across the range and a growing list of satisfied local customers.”
