R means its an R model, the 6 means its an R600, the 86 means it had a 300 Mack motor from the factory, the ST means tandem rear end. Then 28431 means its the 18431st R686ST made. You just subtract the number in the beginning by 1 because Mack began their serial numbers with 1.

Thanks for posting the pics Rob! there was an outfit up in central Jersey,that ran a fleet of B-model wreckers and roll-backs for many years,all totally re-built working trucks,i believe they have since went out of business,because i've seen at least one of their B-67's turn up for sale on here sometime back...........Mark

That F model looks sweet with the Lund.

A local construction company had an R700 they painted for the Bicentennial and trying to locate a picture of it. Somehow I ended up with the air cleaner.

I have the "All American" U model brouchure where all the trucks in it are the stars and bars paint scheme and they have steel dashes and V8 emblems so they are older than 76.

Sounds like the truck that was for sale in PA for $25k with the shot frame. Will look good parked next to the U model.
