I figured it would be a three handed operation ...
-
Given the simplicity of the design, im guessing almost any kind would work. I'd be interested in some pics of the cummins design, but would likely be interested in a complete set-up (if it doesn't break my bank!) thanks!!!

That style set up with the diesel fuel pre heater was common on cummins engines. It had a large glow plug and a hand pump pressurised oil burner nozzle in the intake. The hand primer could probably be sourced from one of these cummins powered units since they were much more common than lanovas.
I took some pictures today of the parts I have. The piece below bolts onto the air intake line (on top of the intake manifold). Looks like I would need a coil and the pump. Any idea if this piece is the same as on the cummins?

Never saw it work or tried to make it work but we had one in an LF
it was a hand pump under the dash to the right of the steering column
had a plate on the dash with instructions that looked like a paragraph out of a novel!
There is a button on the dash right next to the starter button to activate the preheater. It Is a momentary type switch which led me to believe that it drove an electric fuel pump, but now the mention of the hand pump has me wondering....

I bought a new TN75 Ford New-Holland farm tractor in '04 that has the same preheater set up - it works great.
You mean the diesel burner style?

I'm definitely planning on an electric block heater, but am fascinated by the original setup. Theres something about obsolete technology that I find interesting...

With the cold weather finally here, the old Mack (lanova) is starting pretty hard. Originally, there was a diesel fired preheater burner in the air intake line. I have some of the parts ( jets and points) for it, but no pump or coil. My guess is that an electric pump ran the outfit with a small coil to ignite the atomized fuel. Does anyone have a complete set up so I can figure out how it works and sop using a propane torch to help with starting. Thanks! Corey

There was someone that was reproducing back panels and floor sills for the L cab,he used to advertise in Wheels of Time & Double clutch, been quite awhile back, but maybe someone has his contact info.
Thanks, Ron. Hope someone might have an old issue with that info....

That video on YouTube is great! Here is the link for anyone who wants to check it out:

Thanks, Vinny. I'll check that out. Fortunately, with the relatively straight lines of the L model cab, it shouldn't be too hard for even an old farmer like me to fabricate replacement panels. Still wondering, though, if the L cab is the same as any other model....

I recently acquired a '52 LF which needs some cab work. The lower back of the cab is rotted out pretty bad, as are the lower door posts. Although I am new to Macks, the design of the lower cab rear leads me to believe this is a common problem. So, my questions: 1) does anyone make replacement cab backs for the LF, and 2) is the LF cab the same as any other models (from some pictures I have seen, it looks similar to the A model). Thanks in advance!! Corey

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to working on the old Mack and learning all about it. What I know right now is that it has the Lanova diesel in it and a duplex transmission. Not sure of the rear end ratio, but it seems to cruise at about 50 cranking 1900-2000 rpm. As you can see in the pictures, the sheet metal is kind of rough- especially around the bottom back of the cab. Does anyone know if there are replacement panels being made for that? Thanks in advance for any help. Corey.

Hi everyone! Just got my first Mack after years of having old binders (IHC). The Mack is at '52 LF that needs a fair bit of work. I'm hoping I can pick a few brains over the course of the restoration. Looking forward to checking in regularly here. I'm in NW Ohio near Toledo. Corey.
