  1. Yall go ahead and call me crazy, but am gonna retire 1961 B-61 non turbo single axle 673 from pulling bulldozer around, bought an 85 R model 14yd dump today with heavy duty pintle hitch, gonna sell lowboy, buy pintle trailer, and ole B is gonna get a beefed up 6BT cummins with a 6 speed, flatbed with winch and gin poles, all sprayed with black bed liner, fuel transfer tank, rolling tailboard, gonna be the coolest construction support truck ever? I may run over budget rather quickly, but thats the plan for daily driver fuel truck.

  2. hi yes its a 673t i thought i got the 671 wrong thanks

Why did somebody put a 67 Detroit in your B61?

    Or did you mean "ENDT673"?

    I didn't bother doing the calculations, but on 10:00x20 or 11R22.5 rubber I'd suspect about 48 - 50 MPH @ 2100.

    .

just throttle on it till you see vapor trail out both mirrors, hood sets up a nice vibration,,,(vapor trail needs to be white though,,,,not blue and smelly)

  3. when you weld galvanized steel you should have a fan blowing the fumes away from you or it'll make you sick. I've hauled lots of structural steel to the galvanizing plants in Ashland and Petersburg, Va. and Graham, N.C. And I pick up a lot of coils now where they galvanize them, with no ill affects-i'm pefectly normal

I was in a train car one time cutting galvanized tubing in steel mill, it was making beautiful white smoke billowing up around me, thought i had died and was sitting on a cloud somewhere, couldnt find my harp, very soon i awoke at steel mill infirmary with drastic nose bleed singing jimi hendrix tunes, but im fine now,,,,JUST WISH THOSE VOICES WOULD STOP!

  4. I thought I'd read it was incompatible someplace but was unsure if it were all "in my head", (you know how much resides there). I'm building an engine stand to run engines on prior to installation and now may use the lower structural tubes as a fuel tank. I have a remote mount hand pump for priming. This galvanized tank is clean as it was the "potable" water storage for the camper.

    Thanks for the help.

Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away, I actually stored some diesel in a blue 5 gallon galvanized can, dont remember how long it was stored, buttttttt,,,gave it to my neighbor whose tractor was out of fuel way off in field, actually told him it was old fuel, clean can out to get fresh fuel and he could keep can, he said "aw heck, diesel dont never get too old for my tractor",screwed his pump up and sample from can showed gadjillions X 10 of lil bits of galvanize microscopic poopoo. All of the galvanizing had turened loose in can, and was floating helter skelter,,,,,and thas the way it was,,,DO NOT STORE DIESEL IN GALVANIZED CANS! (or koolade for that matter)

  5. It helps by watching the tach, but that ends up being a distraction...

Once you figure out how to 'listen' to the truck, you'll get it.

loaded or empty will make a difference, uphill or downhill matters, if spectator is with you makes really huge difference

  6. I consider Brockway a part of Mack. The design and styling of the Superliner came from Brockway.

    FW

I drove an old brockway for a few months in a steel mill hauling slag, all of it off road, in bout 1973, truck was probably sixty something year model, it was really ragged out, but it looked a lot like b-mack cause of rounded fenders and all, I couldnt even begin to remember engine or trans. type or anything, just know it was hot and noisy in there.

  7. I have a 1984 R686ST with the 300 and 6 speed 2 stick transmission. I love the truck and use it to haul my antique caterpillars for my hobby. My question is why does the 6 speed have so many repetitive gear ratios? Why were they not set up like the duplex to allow split shifting and have 10 different ratios available? I told a friend once, if I designed a 10 story building but told the owner he could only use 6 floors, I don't think I would be designing buildings for very long. It seems as though the step from 4th to 5th is quite far? I would appreciate any info. thanks.

d8 pete, what kinda antique cats you got? I would like to see some of them on here. Im kind of an antique cat operator myself. couple of years ago, Holt cat held a 100 year celebration at their store in longview, fed everybody catfish, gave away prizes and all. I had a good time, they had several antique cats there. I told them to be sure and invite me to their next 100 bash, somebody may have to chew my catfish for me then though.

on my duplex, most of the time, i shift 1 thru 5 low, hood sets up a good vibration, air starts to get thin, afterburner temp starts wasrming up, lots of cars are lined up behind me, waiting on me to face that ole demon, they must be excited cause they honk and yell a lot and give me the number one sign, I ease my goggles down, reach over and slip box into 5 high (with trembling sweaty hand) take the collar off that 673 and let her graze. WHEw,,,according to my fancy dancy GPS i have just achieved maximum velocity of 58.241 MPH again! Man, what a ride! I love beating that ole demon

I have a 61 with a duplex and most of the time i just drive it like a 6 speed cause its too much shifting and hard work scratching to try to do a lot of splitting. I have driven triplex and quads and i think the duplex is by far the hardest one to use. I didnt really think the six speed had a lot of repetitive ratios though,,,my opinion anyway,,,randy

  10. ok may be im nuts but i bought a 1963 tandum axle b61 almost no rust western truck question is from your veterns on the site can a guy make a 1963 b61 dump a hauling working truck again ? it runs well 15 foot box has had more modern items added air gate etc just want a honest anwer from the pros thanks !!

yeah willys, I use a 61 B-61 single axle to move a dozer around jobs 2 or 3 times a week, its like vanscott said though, I spent quite a bit after i bought it to upgrade to tubeless rims and tires and other things to pass DOT. It is definitely slower and probably a little more work driving it, but i love driving it cause it takes me back to younger days,,LOL. My situation is a different than yours though, hauling dirt daily. My truck had gone through a frame off restoration before i bought it, but it still takes a lot more maintenance than a newer truck, always seems to be some lil something to fix, seems that way anyway, but i enjoy it,,,,good luck,,,randy

  11. .

    Hello-

    Chris here, from Baltimore Maryland.

Looking forward to reading the site.

I want to restore a B61 here shortly.

    What a great Truck!

Saw one for the first time nearly twenty years ago, (i just had my forty-second birthday) -and haven't seen any since.

Going to paint her up with a traditional red cab and black fenders, spit polish all the alum. and chrome everything in sight.

    Can't hardly wait.

Thinking about trying to find one already completed close to what i'm looking for. Modern components, drivetrain, air-ride, leather interior/stereo, etc.

A show truck more or less, but a driver too.

Great to be here- looks like a great site, talk later.

Oh; my handle there is the call name of a race-engine build, i'd like to try and put together sometime.

    A 1300 cubic inch V8 HEMIspherical.

The 'paper specs' have it pushing nearly 3000 hp, mildly supercharged.

I'm going to stuff one in an all steel, 'Pro-Street', 55 Chevy Hardtop.

welcome, you will really enjoy it here, there are some really intelligent, helpful people here, (intelligent part leaves me out though),,,,later,,,randy

  12. I get a magazine from Holt Cat 3 or 4 times a year, in this summer issue, Cat is going to cease providing OEM truck engines for truck manufacturers late this year, and has teamed up with Navistar to produce their own brand of on-off highway trucks, with production to begin late 2010 or early 2011. May have a big impact on truck market. Article says they will continue to provide all other engines, just not for truck manufacturers.

  13. Anybody got any advice on changing belt tensioner on cummins 6-BT on Komatsu dozer. The idler is pressed on and tensioner and idler are changed as one unit. Do i need to relieve tension with bolt in middle of tensioner? It looks like it bolts to brace but head of bolt is under plastic cover on front of tensioner, any advice is appreciated, eating belts, idler bearing is out, and im not a very strong person and dont want to wear tensioner home on my forehead,,,,randy

  14. Purchased old superliner, setting for approx 5 years. I know there's mice. I'm sure someone has encountered this. Any ideas to drive(no pun intended) them out. Don't want to bring truck in garage to work on before dealing with problem. I have brand new shop and don't want it infested.

12 gauge, number 4 shot, aim for ftont shoulder so they wont run off and die in some corner and stink

  15. Kudos to him. I'll bet that pup would make a loyal friend for life. If you can put up with their yapping, Beagles are very good companions.

I had one once upon a time. Captain Billy Whizbang was his name. Good dog that seldom made a peep, and he was full blooded.

    Rob

Lil mouse no longer "peeps" and is no longer full blooded. randy

  16. randyp,

Man, that could have been MIGHTY MOUSE you tried to snuff out. Don't you have any conscious? Even Rob waits until the varmint has been dead awhile before he scraps it up off the road or else where. And I thought you were a great candidate for being a true Mack patriot. Must have driven a Peterbuilt at some time in his day. Man, now my hero is dead from some button pusher got happy with his finger. Probably had the other finger somewhere else. .....can't believe it happened to the hero of a many of us kids growing up in the 50's.....now i'll never get to see my little friend again. I just hope none of us Mack guy's don't fall into any dumpster near randyp's house or weve had it.

    mike :(

If you only knew the horrible memory ive had to carry of that curdling lil scream and how it stopped so abruptly,,,woe is me,,,why did i do it?

  17. What a bunch of pricks. Seriously, just push the button? Who could be that cruel?

hate to tell this, long time ago, had fancy trash compactor in garage, would probably turn 6 bags of trash into one lil bale, opened it one day to put trash in, lil mouse sitting on top looking at me, slowly closed door and,,,"sob" dont hate me,,,I PUSHED THE BUTTON,,, there,,its out. I will never, ever forget that high pitched lil scream,,,sniffle,,,oh the pain! I thought i had all that behind me,,,thas mean bout dog though,,later,,randy

  18. Hello all. I have been a Mack fan for years and have my second Mack and thought I would join some fellow fans. My first Mack was a 91 superliner self loader log truck (sold it) I now have a 79 RW flat deck tractor. I'm hoping I can find info about the engine and general stuff about drive train. Thanks for having me

Welcome, welcome welcome, Im not one of them but there are some knowledgable, smart people here, you will enjoy it and learn a lot,,,randy
