  1. Not what you would want to find when doing brakes. I have never seen a butt welded half spindle repair.
  2. Got the radiator and cac back in. started on brakes and s cams. one wheel done three to go. it was fine right up to the second drum.
  3. This has actually been a pleasure to work on. virtually every question I have had has been answered by searching this sight. Most parts are either a call to mack or napa. If I thought for a second I could get away with going around working on other peoples trucks and not starve I would. I finally found some shots of it in its "been sitting in a stone parking lot for the better part of 37 years". Funny how the sun bakes off paint and eats rubber.
  4. Believe it or not I got all 17 stubs out. 16 in the supports and one in the upper tank. No stripped holes and no helicoils. I picked up gasket material today so tomorrow is radiator day. Today was the start on wheel seals,s-cams and bushings. The originals were plastic and knowing my father-in-law never greased. new ones are metal. I dropped off the wheels at Rimm kleen here in town to get the wheels done today and picked up 40 new inner wheel nuts 20L/20R for aluminum wheels. New shoes for the drives will be here in the morning. Also picked up paint today 2qts. 1985 mack dark green,1 qt. black and a gallon of primer. Still no door panels, headliner or rear panel. But getting closer.
  5. now if i can just drill out these 16 broken bolts in the radiator frame........
  6. well.....
  7. stud 24.5's in good shape are getting harder and harder to find so im happy with them. im betting the new springs will be the end of it weather it stops bouncing or not.
  8. I think the non nyloc set has either been changed or possibly different year or model maybe. I'm sure mine are original. Ive got all of the service records since 11/85. vomac said the old number was superceded to what he had just ordered. i'll see on monday when they get here. I can say working on this truck has been downright enjoyable compared to the others even the freighliner. everything is easy to get to. unnecessary engineering is almost nowhere. Even parts have been easy to get (except interior). I even found 8 24.5 stud piloted aluminum wheels today for $600..woohoo.
  9. already ordered a new alternator. water pump was new last year i think. I live between 3 mack dealers 2 said the cooler was discontinued. Vomac in ft.wayne got it for $510.00 plus tax. in 1 day. without fail they have matched or beaten everyone's price and have never failed to get a part. The hood springs i thought we're a no go for sure.
  10. mack still has them . $22.00 each. new springs and washers and my oil cooler came in. mack reman with gaskets and o-rings for the same price as most cores.
  11. I think thats the right answer. I thought they were just made that way but maybe they are just worn out. I found severel pics of them online and they all look more consistently wound (left)then mine (right)wich look almost collapsed. I wonder if they are available and how much they are?
  12. I'm sure some movement is normal but it seems a bit extreme. My 9 year old daughter can lift up on the heim joint and completely compress the spring. when i drove it home i hit the bridge joint going over the mighty mighty tiffin and thought the bolts had fallen out. There is about 1 1/2" of adjustment left but the springs don't really get firmer as they compress. The hood isn't cracked like most of the others i've seen. maybe tighten them up to loose some bounce but leave some flex.
  13. I think im going to try some big block chrysler valve springs welded together and cut down to fit. maybe get half the bounce out of it but still have some give.
  14. 'here the be.
  15. its definatly springs. the hood is off. ill go get a shot of them in a min. they are real week. maybe a couple of valve springs welded together and cut to fit?
  16. I don't know if its quit "eye candy" but it is rust free and low miles. The kids have been calling it Ugly Betty. i've got some shots of it in several states of disarray. i'll get some up when i get home. Does anybody have a fix for the springs located on the hood hinges? These seem to be very soft. The hood comes up quit a bit in the front when you hit a frost heave or bridge joint.
  17. In the places the sun has baked the paint off like the roof it looks like it could be. It was only driven between april and august so it's in pretty good shape. There are some places where stones have peppered the cab and it looks like brown coming thru. It's set for a paint redo in two weeks either dark green and black or dark red and black not sure yet. It was originally white.
  18. I agree it is kind of like riding in a coffe can. I ordered 2 gallons each of lizzard skin heat barrier and sound deadener. I figured that and some interior panels would bring it down to good enough. I jumped into a friends new (2017) volvo a few weeks ago and after awhile not being able to hear all of the typical noises got me wondering if something was going bad that i couldn't hear.
  19. I found the post about the interior sets but it didn't seem to lead anywhere. we have a 94 tandem dump that a driver put in a ditch out back. the interior is there but its grey not tan. I guess it would work if needed. I have a freightliner 132 midroof with a detroit/13 speed and a 270" wb. Im just really tired of driving it. The sleeper is a waste of weight and sometimes its just to much truck in tight spaces. I was looking at newer pre 2000 daycabs and the prices seemed a bit high and we figured that money could be better spent elsewhere. Three weeks till its done.
  20. After 23 years I have finally taken my father in laws truck home. It was used to pull asphalt tankers from the Toledo to jobsites around two counties in n.w. ohio. since 1985 its managed a whole 164000 miles. We have started going thru it and should have it back to work pulling a flatbed hauling local steel in a month or so. It has an e6-350/t2090 and mack 38k rears. Unfortunately It was only driven in the summer so it has sat every winter since its purchase in 1985. So far we have replaced the radiator, A/C condenser,A/C lines, power steering lines, fuel lines, swapped steel fuel tanks for an aluminum set, aluminum battery box covers, oil cooler, alternator, all brake cans and shoes,a couple of wheel seals, ten new tires, air dryer, several hundred light bulbs, welded up a hole in the cac,oil pan gasket and all fluids. It still needs a new one piece composite headliner and full interior if such a thing even exists. Im taking alot of ribbing from family and friends for its age but I figured if it could do it in 1985 it can do it today. we run two lane state highways all the time between gary indiana and toledo so no hills and 55 mph. I dont think ive used all 500 hp in the other truck in years so 350 should do it. Ill try and put up some shots of it in before and after condition.
