thanks for all the ideas. Ill need to figure out something. It woul seem that every town I go through is at the bottom of a hill. Im good to go until i hit 6th gear then the rpm drop vs gear ratio climb is just miserable. Not so bad till you get around 70k gross. At 118,500 gross It takes a minute to get up to 55mph. Once its there it holds its own. Its just getting there thats the problem.

motor is an e6 350 econodyne. technique dosent have much to do with it. In 6,7,8,9 when you run it out to 1800-1900 rpm (as far as it will go) then shift it puts you back at 1200 rpm. I know the "operating range" is 1200-1800 rpm but the sweet spot seems to be 1600-1900 where it pulls better.

Im having an issue with the rpm drop with my t2090. When loaded with any more than 46k on the deck the drop from 1800 down to 1200 rpm is just too much in the top 4 gears. It seems like If I could split the top 4 and keep the rpm drop to half of what it is it would be easier on the engine. That 1200 to 1600 climb is brutal but once it hits 1600 I pulls better and smoother. Would an eaton 13 speed be a pain to swap?

Not completely done but going back to work next week if all goes right. Still need a good set of tanks and a few other things but its close enough for now.

I was hoping to find a cutoff that would fit the 94'. I don't know if that particular model was ever offered with air ride. Seems as though I remember seing one at one time. Most of the cuts I can get around here have no carriers in them. So the challenge is to find a newer airride cut that will take my 94' carriers and axle shafts. Sounds easy enough..hahaha.

Still more fun than the freightliner.

Maybe i'm as my wife says "just being me". I don't like vague or questionable. I like definitive. My jeep 6 died so it got a 440/727/dana300/dana60/14 bolt driveline. Its never left me walking. Given the original assembly was spin welded and it seems to have all the innerds that make up 44k axles (at least according to mack) and it is definitely better than the trail fix it had before so I'll run it. My 94' has a bad trunion and We were going to make it air ride so maybe i'll use a housing from that if they are the same. Still better than it was.

That spindle is hanging on the wall of shame. I do agree steve l. a pressed in spindle is what I wanted but apparently not available and after it was cut just inboard of the spin weld It became apparent why. Where the original housing goes from square to round is only about 4" deep. The transition from sq. to rd. takes about 1 7/8" leaving approx. 2 1/8 of clean round tube. In my opinion any insert is better than none but the axle fixer people apparently disagree. I guess time will tell. Maybe ill take a housing from the 94" r when it gets converted over to air ride and use it on this truck.
-
Sorry i said everyone as that was not the case. I did have quite a few people say the would run it though. The original spindle was a friction/butt weld. nobody had or even offered a press in spindle As far as straight well its not. It seems to be measuring out .010 ish pointed down and square L/R.
-
Hmm. guess i should have kept the 4" badly welded stub that everybody said they would run. The original was friction welded so no sleeve fit either. springs are 4003a's bearing surfaces on all four are 3.25 inner 3.00 outer with 2.27 id tubes with stamped housings. guess ill just keep my fingers crossed.

Helps control the suspension during high speed desert runs. cant get out of low range without them. It really helps.

Yup thats the new one. old one was crooked. antrim sent the turbo today. Should be here by friday. paint and wheels and its done.
-
well he came and went and this is it. when he measured it it was 1/16 out vertical up and 1/16 horizontal forward.

Same here. axle surgeons should be here anytime. When I get it off i'll cut it in half lengthwise just so we can see if i was right.

front bumper spacers?

This has flat hangers and factory a/c. I made some 1"spacers out of some 1/2 wall tierod tubing, seems to look right...enough. -

front bumper spacers?

I don't have any bolts or spacers. what was there before ? I don't know. It hasn't had a bumper in at least 22 years. Father in law died 9 years ago so i cant ask him. What bolts are they? I'm guessing two 1/2" and four 9/16 carriage bolts? -
front bumper spacers?

Thanks for the info and pics. now I need to find those spacers. -
Does anybody know if the front bumper on an 85' r688st with a/c have a notch cutout for the condenser or is the bumper spaced out 1"? In the 22 years i've known this truck its never had a bumper. I found a good painted one at lkq in toledo for $80 and bought it but it hits the condenser. Any ideas?

It might have some time on it but thats about it. Like I said earlier it was only used to move two asphalt trailers around the county from township to township usually half to empty. If it were still on that job I would leave it too. I had a set of wheels come off the front axle of the lowboy one summer after leaving the tire shop. they rolled up county 13 crossed state 20 one hit a barn the other olmost hit the old woman mowing her grass. After collecting my wheels It took the tire shop an houre and a half to get out to me. He asked where the lug nuts were I said how the hell should I know. An hour later he was back with lug nuts. and a non matching wheel to replace the one that was not usable anymore. A month later I got a bill from the tire shop for the road service call including the round trip for lug nuts, the lug nuts AND the rusty non matching steel wheel. Never did pay that bill. Old woman sent us some lug nuts that had taken the wheel for the ride and fell out in her yard with a note saying she didn't know what kind of nuts they were but she didn't like the kind of fruit that fell from the trees and we could have them back. $1350.00 for a " I'm not gonna kill the old woman on the mower guarantee" sounds cheap to me now.

Its been in the family for years. my wife thinks it happened in the late 90's and her dad had it done in a pinch and just never fixed it right. The truck was only used around the county to move asphalt trailers and rarley ever saw 55mph or a full load. I've got it going in on monday for a new spindle at axle surgeons. Really glad that I decided on new brakes and seals otherwise I wouldn't have known it was there. Really can't believe its lasted this long.

It was completly cut off and a piece welded back on. Some say run it. I personally don't trust it and with my luck it will definitely break right on the I-69 michigan scale and send the wheel set rolling into the scale house. So either a housing or a new spindle is the choice. Here at BEA transpotation failure is not an option, It comes as standard equipment.
