  1. Its funny you say the previous owner is happy. He was happy to sell it and that I was going to restore it. It was their workhorse for a long time. However, his hired hand that does most of the driving (hauling grain and farm stuff) said "im just glad its gone so I never have to drive that POS again."... I can only imagine what its like driving it all day with no power steering giving the slow speed maneuvering we do around grain bins and such with old farms not designed for big trucks. Eye of the beholder for sure. I got a good chuckle. Now he is forced to drive loaded w900's with enough lights to land an airplane.
  2. Oh sorry... meant to disclose that in my thank you post. I paid $2500 and they were even nice enough to drive it out to my farm since I couldnt get off work before it got dark. I didnt want to try to drive it to the farm after dark just incase I did have issues. It had sat for seven years. Put new fuel lines and new batteries in her and she drove all the way to the farm with no issues. I felt like it was a good deal. He was happy to get rid of it. They were only selling it since it was sitting. No power steering and his bad shoulders talked him into parking it and buying a different truck seven years ago. I understand value is based on what someone is willing to pay. He posted it on market place and since I know them personally he gave me first shot at buying it. I didnt barter, just paid him asking as I thought it was fair. But there was nothing to really compare it to. I discovered all of you after the purchase. Its a perfect project for my kids and I. Now if I can get my hands on a clean superliner.... now thats my personal dream truck.
  3. So im curious about the value of this truck. Ill share what I paid after I hear your input. This isnt a trap, but I bought this off a neighboring farmer as a project I can restore with my kids. We have other modern trucks to handle the grain hauling. Although after I go through the truck I may take a load or two to the mill just to give everyone something to talk about. Anyways, someone today suggested I way underpaid and now im questioning if I took advantage of someone unknowingly. Truck is not for sale. I am very new to buying old trucks for the purpose of restoring. And brand new to Mack. Thanks for any input.
  4. There are not many parts I cant find a part number for Case IH. Now if the part is actually obtainable is another story all together lol... We farm, and even with working for Case IH I have mostly a mix of brands. We have mostly Deutz and now Deutz Fahr for as long as I can remember. Talk about almost zero dealer support in the USA. But it has made us stronger at solving our own issues without dealer hand holding. It appears Mack may be much of the same. The parts guy I called at a local Mack store didnt understand why my vin wasnt 17 digits. I suspect the truck is at least 20 years older than he is. Funny how quickly history is lost with progress. Thanks again for the help.
  5. thank you sir. you answered my question perfectly. i bought a set if the green manuals with a rev 1979. they look in good shape. i dont need much help right now with the truck. but i know how things go as you start digging into equipment. that one old line replacement turns into a major project.
  6. So I think im searching wrong for manuals. Id like to find any manuals for my 1980 U685ST. 5 speed trans matched to a EZT675 engine which I think is also called a 237. Is TS 442 what the manual is called? With revision 1980? I found a few TS 442 but nothing with a rev passed 1979. Will that work? The ones ive found are sometimes one book or as many as three books. Just a little help on what I should be looking for on ebay. Any other websites I should be looking on? Or online resources? I work for a Case IH parts department and I can pull full manuals for almost any Case or IH equipment. So I hope Mack has something as well. Thanks
  7. I did not know that. Thank you sir. I could see me chasing the rabbit lol
  8. Just the two outside ones? What about the middle one? Mine has 5 total.
  9. Here are a few questions I have if anyone can assist. This white canister is plastic, and real brittle at this point. Its directly behind the passenger side fuel tank on outer side of frame rail. No lines going to it that I can find. What is it and do I need it? Also, on the control panel I have a switch that reads CL LPS. Clearance Lamps? I assume this is for the five lights on top of cab. They dont turn on by the switch, nor do they turn on with any of the other switches. Just need to know so I know where to start with this repair if it is clearance lights. Thanks guys/girls.
  10. Oh I just like seeing what we are talking about. Visual kinda man.
  11. good luck on your project. photos or its just gossip
  12. during harvest we can be behind the wheels for well past 24 hours if the weather holds... my respect for anyone one who managed that with no power steering. thats a big part of me selecting this rig. i am blessed to work with and around many old timers and their stories, my grandfather being one of them. he goes back far enough that horses is where he started. he told the story of his first big truck he had and how he would go to somewhere to get coal for heating. apparently there was a steep grade down the pit to get loaded. he said you learned to carry blocks of wood with you because on the way back up out of the pit if you missed a gear or for whatever reason had to stop, your brakes wouldnt be able to hold the truck. so youd have to jump out and chalk the wheels. hence the start of my love for old trucks.
  13. is it not suppose to be red? i assumed that was how it was built.
  14. Should of seen me at the first right turn at a stop sign. Needless to say I was not ready for how slow she turns from a stop LOL... by the time I got her in the right direction you would of thought I was make a wide right turn for a 53 foot van behind me, not bobtail. I did get a thumbs up from a neighbor who runs two old Petes who later sent me a text "finally got a real truck?" as a way to mock our Freightliner Columbia grain tractors Honestly the biggest issue I have with no power steering isnt the lack of power assist, but that my mid section is on the big side and with this stock seat and no tilt wheel im fighting the manual steering and wheel rubbing my belly! LOL a bit tight for me but still fun. I may get creative with a new air seat but that wont really help for room. And a smaller steering wheel could help for room but clearly make steering worse. I could loose weight.... Maybe someone has a reasonable solution?
  15. Guys I work at a CaseIH dealership in the parts department. So I have access to our bulk oil, our No. 1 oil is 15w40. I sell a lot of it to customers for their semis. I cant seem to find anything on what weight oil I need and if there is anything special I need to consider. Yes, still looking for proper service books so I can avoid these questions. Im just excited to get a full service done.
  16. It is a 5 speed. The oil pan lookd huge compared to our other modern rigs. I was surprised to see three filters and just figured it was a Mack think. The WIX filters on here all have same part number. She is super clean. Even under the mats in the cab there is no rust. Frame looks damn near new. It has spent its years of service hauling chemical tanks for farm field spraying. I doubt its ever seen the salty roads or snow for that matter considering that farm work is seasonal. Thanks guys.
  17. As promised here are the first set of pictures of the old girl. Got her to the farm yesterday. Ran fine and shifted well. No power steering is a work out and something im new to... but also fun thinking about an older generation working these trucks. One photo shows the engine plate. After I get her in the shop ill try to clean it up more for more details. Does anyone know what the belt numbers are for the two belts? I was able to get the filter numbers off the ones on it. What I found in regards to filters; wix coolant filter 24429 wix 3 oil filters 51791 primary fuel fram p1109 secondary fuel fram p3431 Donaldson model number 2MD3156 element 57MD26 gasket 16MD27 Am I missing any? Its real cold out so I didnt craw under her yet so maybe there is a service piece I missed. Also, whats the oil capacity? Im trying to figure out what manuals I need for her. Those will help with my questions im sure. Ill have a million questions im sure, but ill just keep this thread going with updated photos. Ive restored a lot of Harleys, but this is my first big boy project. Wish me luck.
  18. I clearly found the right place for help. Ill record my first start for you guys. I have so many ideas for this truck lol.... when I had free time away from the farm before I rebuilt/restored Harleys. So my creative side is going a bit crazy with this rig. But I need to wrap my head around the mechanical side of things first. Im just glad its not a 5+2. I can handle slow shifting, but I swear you have to be a witch to shift a 5+2. I dont know if I let my inner kid go wild with big stacks, headache rack, and bumper the size of a Buick. Or just clean the old girl up with some fresh paint and new shoes. Take her to the local elevator for all the old timer farmers to gawk. So many paths. Thanks for the warning on firing her up. Ill be spending time with her on the farm lot before going down the road. Wouldnt be the first piece of equipment to go through a barn here HAHA...
  19. Is it a 105 or 107 Jojo? You said 107 in your first response and now 105. Maybe I missed something. Sorry, im trying to learn here. Thanks for the response sir.
  20. Thanks for the response. It is a five speed the best I can tell. Or at least I could shift into five slots and I could not locate a splitter and it did not have a second shifter. Hoping to find some shop manuals for her. Cant wrap my head around Macks naming and numbering system yet. We are putting batteries in her tomorrow to get her home. Only 57000 original miles and the engine looks super clean. So im hoping she is solid mechanically.
  21. Hello everyone. New to the Mack family and this forum. When I was a child I always thought the big mean looking Mack trucks I saw crawling around the timber lands of Wyoming were the best thing ever. Now as an adult I finally get the chance to buy one for a project with my kids. We have always ran the old Ford power units on the farm so this is a whole new world for me. Ill be posting pictures soon when I get her home. Title shows it as a 1980 Mack, and thats it. The vin is u685st19543 and matches the door plate. Door plate also shows Allentown PA. Only the vin is stamped. Everything else is blank. I believe this to be an U, but thats as far as I can come come up with and thats simply comparing it to pictures in google. The cab is offset. So my understanding is this is an R series, U model. Being shorter than the R and an offset cab. Anyone have resources they can point me to in order to decode the vin? Also looking for shop manuals so I can start wrapping my head around this Mack platform. Cheers everyone
