the valve leaked when i released the brakes. i put the new valve on and it leaked when the brakes were applied and released. i caped off the two air lines going to the leaking brake can and that didnt help. i ordered another valve. im at a loss.
did you take off the SERVICE line on the other cans and release the brakes; with the wheels chocked of course. possibly another can is by-passing you can't hear. is the pedal itself working free and not oxidized to mount sticking partially on. with parts today , could be bad new valve. does it have a trolley valve that may be part way on ? did someone have lines off a can then put them on backwards ? these may sound like dumb questions, after xxxxxx yrs of 24/7 road calls ; you get to where you have to start basic with questions. 35min trip on road for liftgate not working --- power cord to trailer not plugged in. next call for same , I said to driver :" is power cord plugged in ?" ; reply - yes it is .... 40 min trip front of trailer power cord hanging . I said "thought you said cord is plugged in!!!!!! . he points to LIGHT cord and says that's it right. light cord green , 2 wire power cord black ... OK I'm paid by the hr, still have rest of fleet to maintain.

years back , I ordered them from fleetpride (Connecticut driveshaft back then ) they helped a lot in keeping a fleet of ice cream trailer cleaner. but be ready for some swearing from tire changers :LOL. triaxles don't do a lot of winter running, snow not a major issue. the snow does a heck of build up during winter driving. they weren't cheap ; but safety for me was the biggest concern . rain over spray highway driving is reduced big time. course tire work on triaxle is simple ; just raise the body.

no where in the conversation was it stated whether the valve was a constant leak or when brakes are applied. brake cans leaking internally maxi to service usually exhaust out the frame quick-release valve . being new to owning a '70's mack; hope you pay very close attention to the how's and proper way to change a brake can!!! I would doubt the cans are original. the old cans were able to have BOTH diaphrams changed. fortunately new cans are no longer able to disassemble maxi side..

these and many other pictures are what should be on the news channels ; not the crap they show . let the rioters see why they have the chance to do what they do. but then the ratings won't be that great.
THANK YOU for these post. May God have mercy on the many POW'S and MIA'S

not for nothing; reading all the technical ideas that are on track ., did anyone consider maybe the brand of oil being used isn't holding up . the pictures show a definite problem with foreign matter raising havoc with bearings etc; the oil itself may be breaking down ,,

I have ruined many paint jobs too with the metal sparks etching itself in then rusting by not covering the cab...
always keep cardboard for coverage also , it might start burning; easier to put small smolder out that paint repair.

I'm liking the clean organized shop. did notice a couple of the pics where the cutting was going on, I screwed up a mirror once while cutting and the sparks pitted the glass. always cover the mirrors or windows when sparks are flying. trucks looking real good

auto trans and XM radio aren't the first thing the "kids"look for;;;; first question is : wheres the AC switch!!! my answer -- drive a B-model ,they have the best AC . just turn the little vent window in and drive fast. faster you go better AC works.. LOL

My tandem axle dump has the trolley brakes on the rear axles. I'm gonna have to replumb it also cause I'm putting a pintle plate on so I can tow a tag trailer.
install the shuttle valve. challenge is to remember the trolley WON'T hold the dump truck it self any more
-
straight trucks had trolley set to rear service brakes through the treadle valve. when it's set up for trailer operation' the treadle valve HAS to have a shuttle valve installed. lt's a small valve many times threaded in to the treadle valve. more like a Tee -valve. some have brake light switch also. when foot brake applied, inside shuttle internally blocks air to trolley; likewise pull trolley applying trailer brake ; tractor brakes not applied. without shuttle valve every time foot brake applied. air would exhaust through trolley . in your case every time trolley applied truck service brakes come on

4 hours ago, Prowrench said:The "U" model cab is off set for the purpose of putting the cab forward to achieve a shorter wheel base in order to pull longer trailers remember the R, U, DM debuted in 1966 The U an DM are basically the same cab as an R but you could not simply place the R cab forward over the engine because with the cab being narrow your accelerator would be on top of the engine. note R no dog house U and DM dog house. The DM 600 and 800 are for better weight distribution over 3 axles
I can blame half my back problems to those U/ D(a)M dog houses ;LOL , wouldn't want to count all the starters I changed through the yrs on off set cabs. half in cab engines no easy way to remove or install starters . raises havoc on body today twisting and turning half upside down.

the FCSW could be cause for debate as an off-set. the cab isn't flush with the body, has driverside fender wider then cab, bulldog on radiator cap some what centered with front windshield center line. hood design makes off set appear greater. drove both DM600 and 800 dumps basically you are on the body line. yes /no the FCSW was an off set relative

well i own one,,,,DM600and im not really sure,,,,but i watched a video a while ago and it explained only reason for it was leg room,,,,but it still doesnt explain what about the 800 series,,,,but i heard years ago....it was just for visibility ,backing in .......bob
The 800 series gave a person the opportunity of higher horsepower for a heavy haul mover. imagine working on a 600 with a 864 /866 V8 or large cummins or cat. and besides what a beautiful majestic looking truck :DM800 LOL.

Mr. Hancock to the rescue. Offset cabs did give you a good line of sight down the drivers side. There was a predecessor to the U and DM back in the 40's or 50'sI forget the model' A huge Mack water truck sometimes makes the show circuits. FK maybe? It seems Mack out did them all by a long shot with the number of models
LM had the off set. arute had one

Welcome to the Jungle, we got Macks in trees
in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Posted
the good part of story is owner willing to sell. how may times interested person hears " nope not for sale, I'm gonna get it runnin", as the trees grow into the vehicle like in these pictures . many yrs ago rumor had it a mack jr was deep in the ct woods. (Roxbury) area. a big chain saw would be needed. and NO the owner would not sell it and DON'T get caught going in the woods to see it. I never did find it. east coast is rough on old iron in the woods. doesn't take long before they sink deeper into the ground and rust away.
